Hey Friends, Bradley here! Meeting new humans can feel overwhelming for some of us, but with understanding and patience, you can help us feel safe and comfortable.

Here are some of my tips: Be patient. Let us feel comfortable in our space while our parent give us an activity to do like finding treats, or a trick or two we know. Relax and just talk. Speak with our parent while they assess the situation. If you are calm, it helps us feel calmer too. Please don’t reach for us or try to pet us right away because it can feel scary. Give us time to decide if we want to come to you. My mom uses a cue called “Touch” to help me meet people. She asks the person to keep their hand at their side, and if I feel comfortable, I will boop it with my nose for a treat. It lets me make the first move.

Remember, not all dogs want to meet and greet, and that is totally okay. We are all trying our best, and with your understanding, we can feel safe and build confidence over time. Always give a dog space, let us come to you, and respect our signals. We will appreciate it.
