MASCARA OR EXTENSIONS? Is Mascara on Its Way Out?

According to a New York Post article from earlier this year, mascara sales are down and fake eyelashes are to blame — particularly eyelash extensions. While this more permanent option for adding length and volume to the wearer’s eyelashes was once too pricey to be a viable beauty option, a lot of less expensive, quality alternatives have hit the market in recent years. Does this mean mascara products are circling the drain? Mario Dedivanovic, the Kardashians’ go-to makeup artist, told CNN it wasn’t as simple as that. He insisted mascara would always have a place among beauty products, but eyelash extensions are just an easier lifestyle choice for many women right now. Many celebrity cosmetic lines have reacted to (or created) this trend by not including mascara in their most recent product launches. Mascara sales are currently down 7%.

Appointments to get eyelash extensions still cost anywhere between $100–$250 for professional application, and between $40–$60 for fill-in appointments every three weeks. For some women, that could be worth it because, with eyelash extensions, you don’t need to use mascara to enhance their length or volume; all you have to do each morning is comb them. You can wear them in the pool, at the beach, or even while doing hot yoga. For what you lose on extensions in terms of cost, you might make up for in terms of convenience. While extensions may not kick mascara off the shelves anytime soon, they certainly open up more options for you to accentuate your eyes.

INGREDIENTS

2 salmon fillets (10 oz total)

1 tsp salt

2 tbsp ghee

1 tbsp garlic, minced

1 tbsp fresh rosemary, chopped

Zest from 1 orange

1/3 cup fresh-squeezed orange juice

1 tsp tapioca starch

DIRECTIONS

1. Heat oven to 425 F, and line a sheet pan with parchment paper. 2. Salt each fillet with 1/2 tsp salt. Bake for 6–8 minutes. 3. In a saucepan, combine ghee and garlic and cook over medium heat for 3 minutes.

4. Add rosemary, zest, and juice. Cook for another 3 minutes. 5. Stir in tapioca starch until lumps disappear and mixture thickens. 6. Plate salmon and top with orange sauce.
