MEDICAL SCHOOL SET TO WELCOME MORE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AS CANADIAN PARTNERSHIP GROWS Swansea University builds on its successful collaboration with Trent University in Canada to launch an additional opportunity for transatlantic study in Medical Sciences. SWANSEA UNIVERSITY AWARDED £2.4 MILLION RENEWAL FUNDING FOR WORLD- CLASS DEMENTIA DATA REPOSITORY Swansea University has been awarded £2.4 million in funding to continue and develop the Dementias Platform UK (DPUK) Data Portal. The Portal, led by Swansea’s Population Data Science team, gives researchers around the globe rapid online access to high quality, multi-modal data from over 3.5 million participants. LECTURER HONOURED FOR EXCEPTIONAL CONTRIBUTION TO PHARMACOLOGY TEACHING Pharmacology Lecturer Dr Aidan Seeley has won the prestigious Rang Prize (non-Clinical) at the annual awards presented by the British Pharmacological Society for his innovative approach and contribution to teaching. The award recognises excellence in teaching and is presented to candidates who have made an exceptional contribution to the teaching of clinical or non-clinical pharmacology in the past five years. It stands testament to the freedom Swansea University has given staff to explore and develop new and engaging ways to deliver our BSc programmes.

SWANSEA UNIVERSITY RANKED TOP IN THE UK FOR MEDICINE Swansea University broke into the top 30 in the Complete University Guide League Tables 2022, with Medicine ranked 1st in the UK. The main league table ranks 130 UK universities based on measures including entry standards, student satisfaction, research quality and graduate prospects. The rankings demonstrate that Swansea continues to offer both an excellent student experience and great career prospects.

A unique exhibition featured virtual reality artwork created by young people to express their feelings about their mental health as part of a Swansea University project exploring how young people post, share and view images online to express their state of mind.

SWANSEA UNIVERSITY STUDENT NURSES IN THE RUNNING FOR STUDENT NURSING TIMES AWARDS Bethany Kelly, a nurse of fourteen years, has advanced her career with a master’s degree in Diabetes Practice at Swansea University, all while being a single mother to two children and working on the frontline during the pandemic. She also took on the role of Co-Chair for the Diabetes Specialist Nurse (DSN) Forum UK.

TRIPLE AWARDS SUCCESS FOR UNIVERSITY DIABETES EXPERT

Following funding from HEFCW to build the work of Swansea University’s Centre for Lactation, Infant Feeding and Translation (LIFT), Swansea University and Swansea Bay University Health Board launched a new partnership with the Human Milk Foundation to create Wales’s first donor milk bank hub. Located at Singleton Hospital, the hub will allow more sick and premature babies in the region to receive donor breast milk. OVER 600,000 EMERGENCY CALLS TO 999 DURING THE FIRST WAVE OF THE PANDEMIC WERE FOR SUSPECTED COVID Findings from a major new survey of UK ambulance services carried out by a team from Swansea University will help ambulance experts and policymakers plan for further waves and future pandemics, showing patterns of demand, and helping improve safety and effectiveness.

Dr Becky Thomas, a Senior Research Officer and Co-director for MSc Diabetes Practice, was named three-time winner at a major UK healthcare awards, honoured for her willingness to go above and beyond in

supporting and educating people living with diabetes.

SWANSEA UNIVERSITY STUDENT HELPING TO PROMOTE RACE EQUALITY IN WALES Swansea student Saadia Abubaker is speaking out about her own experiences of racism to help ensure Wales becomes a better place to live. The Sociology and Psychology student is now a community consultant for the Welsh Government’s new Race Equality Action.

Two Swansea Nursing students were shortlisted in the 2021 Student Nursing Times Awards. Simon James and Stuart Denman were both in the running for Student Nurse of the Year: Adult, with Simon also shortlisted for the Most Inspirational Student Nurse of the Year award.
