MY JOURNEY WITH 29029 AND THE POWER OF PUSHING FORWARD ONE STEP AT A TIME

If you had asked me six years ago what “29029” meant to me, I’d have guessed it was a ZIP Code or maybe the square footage of a mega-mansion. It turns out that it’s the vertical height of Mount Everest, Earth’s highest mountain above sea level, and the backbone of a challenge that has reshaped how I think about grit, purpose, and just showing up for hard things. What is the 29029 Everest Challenge? The challenge dares participants to climb the vertical equivalent of Mount Everest, 29,029 feet, within 36 hours. It’s not a race, but a personal test of endurance, resilience, and transformation. Participants hike up a mountain ski slope repeatedly, taking the gondola down after each ascent, until they reach the cumulative elevation goal; hence, the moniker “29029.” It all started in 2019. After a friend heard motivational speaker Jesse Itzler speak to promote the event, he texted me, “We need to do 29029.” Thinking it was some sort of leadership retreat, I agreed. A few months later, I found myself at Snowbasin, Utah, surrounded by endurance athletes and wondering when and where the cocktail hour was. I was unprepared physically and mentally. I pushed through four ascents before dehydration forced me to stop, and I walked away with more than just sore legs. I discovered some things about discomfort:

it’s often where clarity begins, that our limits are often illusions, and that community makes the climb possible. Following my initial introduction to the 29029 Everest Challenge, I tackled subsequent annual climbs, various locations, all spectacular. In 2024, I signed up for yet another epic adventure with a twist. This time it was the TRAIL Tahoe horizontal edition: three mountain ultra marathons on the Tahoe Rim Trail, spread over three days. No gondolas. Just me, my thoughts, and nearly 81.5 miles of trail. I trained hard, leaned on an incredible community, and laced every mile with intention and a deep motivation to support JaxPAL and the young people they empower. I realized this wasn’t just a physical challenge. It was mental, emotional, and spiritual — a reminder that you build endurance one decision at a time. Next month, I’m headed to Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, for another inspiring 29029 inaugural event. This one takes me back to the classic format: 15 ascents of rugged trail, approximately 2,000 feet each, all within 36 hours. A vertical Everest. A French-Canadian backdrop. And a fresh perspective. At this very moment, as I sit with this season’s stillness, the kind of hush that late summer brings, I can’t help but reflect on how these climbs mirror the paths of so many of you in our WRN community, full

of unexpected turns, deep resolve, and purposeful momentum. Whether you’re climbing your own personal summit or catching your breath at a plateau, know that we see your journey, and we’re honored to be part of it. The truth is that these challenges aren’t really about miles or mountains. They’re about movement and choosing to go forward when it’s easier to sit still, about doing things that might make you feel uncomfortable because that’s where the growth lives. That’s what I love most about our WRN family: the way we meet the moment. Year after year, we evolve. We adapt. We keep going. And we do it together. So, here’s to your summit, whatever it looks like. Here’s to showing up again and again. And here’s to believing that what’s just ahead might be more dynamic and meaningful than you ever imagined or thought possible. Let’s keep climbing — one step, one story, one summit at a time.

SANDWICH GENERATION STRESS SMART STRATEGIES TO SURVIVE THE CAREGIVING YEARS

Caring for children and aging parents can be stressful for the generation in the middle, leading to heavy workloads and round-the- clock worries. Nearly 1 in 4 American adults are shouldering those duties as part of the sandwich generation — that is, they have at least one parent over 65 and are raising a child under 18 or supporting an adult child financially, according to Pew Research. These cross-generational responsibilities can easily leave a caregiver feeling swamped and stressed out. However, family-care experts have provided three strategies for navigating this challenging stage of life. Self-Care Essentials Neglecting your own physical and mental health is a mistake, not only for your sake but for ensuring you have the inner resources you need for your family. One

social worker told Care.com, “You can’t pour from an empty cup.” If you simply can’t find time for a break to exercise, read, or chill with friends, ask a spouse, another family member, or a friend to take over caregiving duties so you can get away. If you need support or space to vent, look for a caregiver support group through a local aging agency, hospital, or senior-care facility. Streamline Tasks Plan to delegate chores, such as driving the kids to sports practice or taking Mom to a doctor’s appointment. To avoid constantly updating family members on a loved one’s status, set up a group text or shared Google Doc. Family- focused platforms such as Lotsa Helping Hands offer more

elaborate information-sharing functions and can be especially useful during crises. Non-Negotiable Needs You may never attain a sense of balance during this life stage. As one caregiver

says, sometimes it’s all about putting out fires, and that’s okay! But don’t surrender your own needs entirely! Identify the activities you simply cannot give up without sacrificing

your mental health, such as regular exercise, time outdoors, or coffee

with friends. Make time for these pursuits by enlisting others to help or paying for professional care. Remember that the difficult, unpredictable labor of family care you provide can make a huge and enduring difference in your loved ones’ quality of life. And that is a purpose well worth pursuing!

A Fresh Financial Start for Empty Nesters Back-to-School, Back-to-Budget

As backpacks come back out and school buses hit the road again, something else shifts in many households: the quiet. For empty nesters, back-to-school season isn’t just a fresh start for the kids; it is a chance for a fresh financial start, too. After years of kid-centered spending on sports equipment, school lunches, dance recitals, and college tuition, it’s time to reevaluate your budget and align it with this new

Step 2: Reset Your Financial Goals With fewer kid-related costs, you may be able to accelerate progress toward your retirement goals, pay down debt faster, or build that travel fund you’ve been dreaming about. Schedule a meeting with your financial advisor to realign your investment strategy based on your updated income, lifestyle, and timeline. Step 3: Build a ‘Just Us’ Budget

chapter of life. You can think of it like your financial “back-to-school shopping spree,” but for peace of mind. Step 1: Revisit Your Expenses Now that the kids are out of the house

This is your time! Create a budget that reflects what matters most to you now, whether that’s weekend getaways, starting a new hobby, or investing in your health and wellness. It’s a shift from survival mode to intention mode. Remember, budgeting doesn’t have to be restrictive; it can be empowering. Step 4: Don’t Forget the Nestlings Even as your kids fly the coop, some financial support may still be part of the equation. Whether it’s helping with tuition, a wedding, or setting them up in their first apartment, be realistic about what you can and want to contribute without derailing your financial security.

(and maybe off the budget), it’s a great time to examine where your

money’s going. Groceries, utilities, and entertainment costs often shrink once your children are no longer part of the daily routine. Recalculate your household expenses and identify areas where you can save or, better yet, redirect those funds toward long-term goals.

Take a BREAK!

Don’t Let Care Costs Sneak Up on You When it comes to financial planning, most of us think about retirement savings, wills, and dream vacations. But one critical piece that’s often forgotten about is long-term care. While it’s not enjoyable to think about, planning for it now can be the key to protecting everything you’ve worked hard to build. Long-term care includes services like in-home assistance, nursing care, or assisted living, all of which Medicare doesn’t fully cover. With the cost of care rising yearly, even a few months of unexpected care needs can drain your retirement savings if you’re unprepared. The solution is planning ahead. Start with a realistic conversation. No one likes to think about needing help someday, but having a candid conversation about your preferences and expectations is a powerful first step. Whether you plan to age in place or explore other care options, knowing what you want helps guide financial decisions today. Explore your coverage options. Many people assume health insurance or Medicare will cover long-term care. Unfortunately, that’s rarely the case. Consider looking into long-term care insurance while you’re still relatively young and healthy because it’s more affordable that way. You can also explore hybrid life insurance policies or annuities that include long-term care benefits. Factor care into your retirement plan. When working with a financial advisor, ensure long-term care is part of your retirement strategy. This might mean setting aside a designated portion of your nest egg for future care, investing in a policy, or building PREPARE YOUR FINANCES TODAY

Hot Honey Mango Margarita

Inspired by HeySnickerdoodle.com

INGREDIENTS • Lime wedge • Chili lime seasoning • Ice • 10 oz mango chunks

• 1 oz lime juice • 3/4 oz Cointreau • 1 tbsp hot honey • Mango slices and additional lime wedges (optional garnish)

• 1/3 cup water • 2 tbsp sugar • 1 1/2 oz tequila

a family support plan. Whatever the path, the goal is the same: preserve your assets and reduce stress for your loved ones.

DIRECTIONS

Don’t wait for a crisis. The truth is that most families don’t talk about long-term care until they’re in the middle of a crisis, and by then, options are limited and expensive. Planning ahead puts you in control and allows you to make choices that align with your wishes, protect your finances, and offer peace of mind.

1. Coat the rim of your serving glass with chili lime seasoning, using a lime wedge to create the binder, then carefully fill with ice. 2. In a blender, add mango chunks, water, and sugar and purée until smooth. 3. Pour mango purée, tequila, lime juice, Cointreau, and hot honey into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Cover and shake vigorously for 10–20 seconds. 4. Carefully strain the margarita mixture into the prepared glass. 5. Garnish with lime wedge and mango slices coated in chili lime seasoning if desired. Note: This delicious recipe can easily be made virgin by omitting the tequila and Cointreau!

WHALES, WINE, AND WHIMSY

WHY NANTUCKET SHOULD BE YOUR NEXT GETAWAY

When many Americans think of vacation destinations, they envision beautiful state parks, sunny beaches in Florida or California, and the mountains of Appalachia and the Rockies. However, many states across the

country offer exciting events and beautiful scenery. If Massachusetts isn’t already on your radar, consider giving it a closer look the next time you plan a vacation. Cape Cod has beautiful beaches and a rich history that many don’t know about, and something exciting is always happening in Boston. But if you want to experience the true essence of Massachusetts, take a trip to Nantucket. Nantucket is a small island, only 14 miles long and about 3.5 miles wide. Its history with European settlers goes back over 500 years. First sighted by an Englishman named Bartholomew Gosnold in 1602, the island was settled by colonists 50 years later in 1659. Not long after, they spotted whales offshore, which put Nantucket on the map. Whaling became the ultimate trade for people living in the area, and the island even became the world’s whaling

capital until the 1850s. You can still view whales from the island today, and if you want to get the full story, check out the Nantucket Whaling Museum. If whale watching and museum touring aren’t your thing, you can pursue other exciting activities around Nantucket. The island is bike-friendly, and many trails will take you by all the best sights. Many one-of-a-kind boutiques occupy beautiful historic buildings, and there’s even a public golf course that will leave all your golfing buddies jealous. If you go in May, you may even experience the renowned Wine & Food Festival. Nantucket is full of historic architecture, beautiful scenery, and friendly people. You might even see a famous face during your visit! This is a vacation you’ll be talking about for years to come!
