A LETTER FROM SALLY HUGHES & ADAM ROLSTON THE ARTISTIC DIRECTORS OF THE MILL
Over the past year, we’ve faced some of the toughest challenges in The Mill at Sonning Theatre’s 43-year history. Like so many theatres across the country, we’ve felt the impact of rising costs, shifting audience habits, and the responsibility of preserving a much-loved venue that receives no public funding.
beautifully presented à la carte menus, seasonal produce, and the same warm hospitality — without the queue.
Another milestone moment came with the national tour of DEATH COMES TO PEMBERLEY — our first ever Mill-originated production to travel the country. Taking the spirit of The Mill on the road was a thrilling achievement, and the response from audiences has been nothing short of inspiring. (You can read more about this exciting journey later in this brochure.) And we’re not stopping there. The future holds bold plans: new productions, world premieres, fresh partnerships, and a continued commitment
“THE FUTURE HOLDS BOLD PLANS: NEW PRODUCTIONS, WORLD PREMIERES, FRESH PARTNERSHIPS.”
But through every challenge, one thing has remained constant — your extraordinary support. This year marks the beginning of a new chapter for The Mill. We’re proud to share that a consortium of passionate supporters has come together to help secure the theatre’s future, ensuring that this unique space on the Thames continues to thrive for generations to come. Their commitment — and yours — gives us renewed hope and energy. Despite the hurdles, 2025 has given us much to celebrate. We began the year with our most successful production ever: WHITE CHRISTMAS . It snowed on stage well into January, and the joy of that production carried us through the winter blues. Audiences adored it, critics championed it, and our entire team took great pride in bringing it to life. February saw the launch of our brand-new table service restaurant, marking a major step forward in The Mill’s dining experience. After 43 years of buffet service, it was time for something fresh:
to ensuring The Mill remains a home for exceptional theatre, wonderful food, and shared community.
“THIS YEAR MARKS THE BEGINNING OF A NEW CHAPTER FOR THE MILL.”
To everyone who has attended a show, shared a kind word, or stood by us in a time of both hardship and hope — thank you.
The Mill exists because of you. With heartfelt gratitude,

THE MILL GOES ON TOUR DEATH COMES TO PEMBERLEY
A Company Rising to the Challenge Behind the scenes, the tour represented a major logistical leap for our team. Coordinating multiple venues, travel schedules, technical rehearsals and load-ins demanded a level of precision and teamwork unlike anything The Mill had done before. It was a test of ambition, resilience and artistry — and our company rose to meet it. “It was exhilarating,” says Sally. “To stand in a theatre hundreds of miles from Sonning and hear the audience respond with such warmth was profoundly moving.” The Next Act Begins The success of Death Comes to Pemberley marks a bold new chapter for The Mill. It’s proof that our work has a life beyond our historic home — and that audiences far and wide share our love of beautifully crafted theatre. As the curtain falls on this first tour, we’re already dreaming of the next adventure. More tours are being planned, part of a long-term vision to share The Mill’s work with audiences across the UK.
When we first obtained the rights to Death Comes to Pemberley in 2023, we knew we were embarking on something truly special. Adapted from P. D. James’s celebrated novel — itself a brilliant continuation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice — this sumptuous production combined wit, mystery and romance against the elegant backdrop of Darcy and Elizabeth’s world. Its timing could not have been more perfect: 2025 marked the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen, with celebrations taking place across the country. But this production wasn’t just another hit for The Mill at Sonning Theatre. It marked the beginning of something bigger — our first ever national tour, more than eighteen months in the making. What began as a sold-out run on our riverside stage grew into a landmark moment in The Mill’s 43-year history. In spring 2025, Death Comes to Pemberley — a world premiere — embarked on an eight-week national tour, travelling to some of the country’s most beloved theatres including Theatre Royal Bath, Theatre Royal Brighton, New Theatre Cardiff, Theatre Royal Windsor, Richmond Theatre and more. “TOURING PEMBERLEY WASN’T JUST ABOUT TAKING A SHOW ON THE ROAD — IT WAS ABOUT TAKING THE SPIRIT OF THE MILL WITH US.”
For the first time, our work reached thousands of new audience members across the UK.
“We’ve always believed that what happens at The Mill deserves to be seen far and wide,” says Artistic Director Sally Hughes. “Touring Pemberley wasn’t just about taking a show on the road — it was about taking the spirit of The Mill with us.” Designing a Show that could Travel One of the most ambitious aspects of the project lay in the design of the production. The Mill’s intimate auditorium has its own unique dimensions — but most touring venues are far larger. Our creative team, led by set designer and production manager, had to re-imagine the original set so it could seamlessly expand and adapt to a range of different theatres. The drawing rooms and ballrooms of Pemberley were designed as modular pieces, allowing them to grow or contract depending on the stage. Ingenious panelling and flexible sightline solutions meant that whether the show was in Sonning
or Brighton, it retained its visual richness and atmosphere.
This meant months of planning, precision carpentry, and engineering: each element needed to be strong enough to withstand travel, light enough to be moved quickly, and elegant enough to maintain the high production values The Mill is known for. Scenic elements were designed to be packed into touring trucks with military precision, ensuring the show could load in and out swiftly at each stop. “The set was built almost like a puzzle,” explains Sally. “It had to fit perfectly together in Sonning — but also be able to stretch its wings in a large proscenium theatre. That’s no small feat.” A Cast and Company on the Road The cast — led by some of the UK’s finest stage talent, including James Bye (Martin Fowler in EastEnders) — transported audiences into Austen’s world with elegance, wit and a touch of danger. From glittering ballrooms to a courtroom crackling with scandal, the production captured hearts everywhere it went. Audiences responded with standing ovations and glowing reviews, praising its meticulous design, atmospheric lighting and captivating performances.
The story of The Mill is growing — and we can’t wait to share the next act with you.

How would you describe the atmosphere at The Mill to someone who has never been? It’s an evening in a place with old-world charm, warm hospitality, and exceptional theatre. You arrive to the sound of the river, enjoy drinks in the Waterwheel Bar, sit down to a beautiful meal, and then see a show where every seat has a wonderful view. It’s an experience. Do you have a particular show or production that holds a special place in your heart? Yes! Singing in the Rain. I’ll never forget the real water cascading down on stage. It was a spectacular moment that captured the magic of live theatre and the ambition of The Mill’s productions. Why do you think supporting live theatre — and The Mill in particular, matters? Supporting live theatre has never been more important. I’m also involved in amateur theatre locally, and I know how vital it is to keep spaces like The Mill thriving. It’s our nearest professional theatre, and its productions rival London quality. In your view, what makes The Mill unique compared to other theatres? The Mill is a complete night out. It has on-site parking, a riverside restaurant, a cosy bar, and a stunning auditorium. It’s a one-of-a-kind dinner theatre — warm, welcoming, and unforgettable. What would you say to someone considering becoming an Angel? Do it. You’ll become part of something truly special. You’ll meet the people who make the theatre run, see behind the curtain, and feel the joy of helping keep this remarkable place alive.

For many regular visitors to The Mill at Sonning Theatre, the experience goes beyond just dinner and a show. Our Angels are a cherished part of The Mill family — passionate supporters who help us keep this unique theatre thriving. We sat down with one of our long- standing Angels, ANN ROBERTS to find out what being part of this special community really means to them. What inspired you to become a Mill Angel and how long have you been involved with The Mill? We’ve been coming to The Mill for many years. It’s a place we’ve always loved, the atmosphere, the riverside setting, and the quality of the productions. When The Friends of The Mill launched, we immediately signed up. And when the Angels group was created, we upgraded without hesitation. Supporting the theatre felt natural. Can you share a favourite memory or standout moment from your time as an Angel? One that stands out was an exclusive Angels’ evening in the restaurant. The cast performing at The Mill gave a reading of a new play by Simon Williams, and I was given the chance to read a part myself. It was an unforgettable moment that made me feel truly part of The Mill family. How has your relationship with the theatre grown since becoming an Angel? Becoming an Angel has opened the door to the world behind the stage. We’ve seen how productions are built, from set design to rehearsals, and met the talented people who make it all happen. It’s deepened our connection and made us feel invested in The Mill’s success.

THE UNFRIEND THE SMASH HIT COMEDY BY STEVEN MOFFAT
TUESDAY 14 - SATURDAY 18 APRIL 2026
While Peter and Debbie are enjoying a cruise to celebrate twenty years of marriage, they befriend fellow passenger Elsa Jean Krakowski, an eccentric widow from Denver. There’s something slightly unsettling in her friendliness and eagerness to stay in touch, but they agree – because no one ever really does, do they? Back home a few months later, Elsa suddenly invites herself to stay. Debbie decides to Google her — too late, they learn the truth about Elsa Jean Krakowski. What danger have they allowed into their home? How do they protect all they love? Sometimes, the truth is just too impolite. The Unfriend takes a hilarious, satirical look at middle-class England’s instinct to always appear nice.
