Senate Bill 1422, by Senator Burgess (companion House Bill 1159, by Representative Roth). The legislation would have amended section 595.420, Florida Statutes. The Legislature found that millions of pounds of surplus and slightly blemished fruits and vegetables are destroyed each year, while many Floridians go without food. The legislation would have created a pilot program designed to provide incentives for food producers to sell fresh food products to food recovery entities at a discounted price to combat hunger. It would have mandated that the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services submit program reports detailing expenditures and specifics of purchased fresh food products.
