2. Helping Students with Disabilities a. Before coming

i. Learn as much as possible about the situation before they arrive (via reading their file, phone, e-mail, etc.). Talk to them about the assistance programs available and what is expected academically here at WOLBI. ii. Students who indicate a learning disability on their application will be contacted for further information with professional documentation if available. This will also give them a chance to ask any questions they have about our programs. Students must sign a waiver form if they prefer that they not be identified as having a learning disability in our records. iii. Send book lists/assignment sheets ahead of time to students so that they can get a start on reading, chapter titles, memorizing verses, etc. iv. Students who re-enroll to improve previous WOLBI work must be brought to the attention of the Institutional Effectiveness Coordinator, as well as the Academic Dean, for progress tracking. b. Tutoring Program i. The tutoring program is on a voluntary basis, but when requested, must stay in the program until either mid- semester or end of the semester, at which time there will be a personal evaluation to determine if there is still a need. ii. Tutee must sign a tutoring contract, which states the responsibilities of the tutee. iii. How the program works: • Student contacts the academic department. • The Academic representative assigns the student to a tutor. • The tutor contacts student to arrange time and place. • The tutor meets weekly or bi-weekly for an hour. • Tutees are required to attend the study skills group sessions during study hours. • At mid-semester and beginning of semester an evaluation is completed to determine effectiveness of program and make any changes necessary. • At the mid-semester mark, the student may choose to remove him/herself from the program. At any time in the semester, a member of the academic department may eliminate the student from the program due to a lack of personal effort or because this service is deemed no longer needed by the student. iv. Selection criteria for tutors: 1. GPA – Tutors must have at least a 3.5 GPA 2. Skill/Competency – Tutors must show an ability to: • Work with other people o understand/discern their needs o teach/explain • Encourage/motivate spiritually, as well as academically • Work willingly and efficiently and maintain their own work in the process! 3. Complaint resolution: If the tutee is unhappy with the performance of the assigned tutor, the following procedures will be followed: • The tutee should explain in writing the concerns with the tutor and give the concerns to the Academic Assistant. • The Academic Assistant will evaluate the concerns. If correctable, the concerns will be addressed with the tutor, and two more sessions will pass before the tutee can resubmit a written complaint requesting a different tutor. • Upon receiving the second written complaint, or if the first complaint appears to be irresolvable, the Academic Assistant will appoint a new tutor.
