For Everything You Did for Us

I think the reason earth is sometimes called “Mother Earth” is because mothers bring forth all kinds of new growth. They nurture their offspring and help them grow in a positive direction. That’s what a mother is supposed to do, and I think that even if you didn’t know your birth mother, everyone at least has had a mother figure who fits this description. My mother definitely did all she could to give my siblings and me the best possible life growing up. My parents were married and divorced twice, and as much as mom really wanted to give us a two-parent household, that wasn’t always possible. When my sisters and I were teenagers, our mom was the one who took care of us. She acknowledged and supported my dreams. She never wanted us to have to worry about money, so she told us to learn a skill set that would always be in demand and to get a well-rounded college education. For 18 years growing up, she made sure we had three meals a day, every day. I look back now and realize she wasn’t just filling our bellies, she was filling our souls! She was a superwoman, and she set us up for success.

I think one of the most important things I learned from my mom was how to treat women right. I was the only guy in my house, with just my mom and two sisters. I became very sensitive to how I treated women. If I was with a girlfriend, I would think: Is this how I would want someone to treat my mom? My mom also gave me a heart. I never wanted to disappoint my mother in anything because if I disappointed my mom, that’s how I knew I really screwed up. My dad was the disciplinarian in my household when I was little, so disappointing him was a little more normal. If my mom expressed disappointment, I would apologize and do everything I could to make it right.

–Duane Hamilton done, and she let me off the hook. My mom sacrificed for us every day without complaining. She protected us from a lot of the hardships she went through, and to me, that’s godly. In the Bible, it says that God sacrificed his son Jesus Christ for us, and that love makes me think of the love that undergirds all the sacrifices parents make for their kids. To all of you who are moms and use the good years of your lives to take care of your kids, thank you. just go off on me, but I think she knew that I didn’t know exactly what I had

I was a very mischievous child, and Mom was always coming to my rescue. One time, not knowing what it was exactly, I stole a $100 bill out of my dad’s wallet. My dad was livid when he found out, and before he could really give it to me, Mom told me to get in bed. She could have let my dad

taken to an internment camp. This is a story about overcoming prejudices and ending cycles of trauma, and it is one that readers may find timeless. ‘All the Light We Cannot See’ by Anthony Doerr Multilayered and expertly written, yet still accessible to the average reader, “All the Light We Cannot See” is a deeply human story of two children on opposite sides of the conflict. One is the blind daughter of a Parisian locksmith, and the other is a prodigious German soldier who has a knack for fixing and operating radios. As dissimilar as they may be, they are brought together by the war in ways that will lead you to dwell on Doerr’s words for weeks after you’ve finished. Don’t know where to start when looking for a group to join? Start online! Try searching “groups for retirees” and see what comes up. You might discover a travel group and start planning your trip to Asia. Or maybe you’ll have more fun mentoring young people in your professional field. Don’t be afraid to spend your retirement doing something new! There’s nothing wrong with enjoying your alone time, but don’t let your alone time turn into a lonely retirement. Joining a group can help you broaden your social circle, stay active, and maybe even learn something new about yourself.

While it’s great not having your nose to the grindstone nine-to-five, leaving work also means leaving behind a lot of daily activities and social interaction. Eventually, having nothing but free time goes from relaxing to isolating, and that can be dangerous to your physical and mental health. When planning for retirement, it’s important to plan ways to stay active and engaged. Joining a new organization or club can

Powerful Stories From World War II

World War II was one of the most influential conflicts in human history. Historians and scholars have gone to great lengths to preserve a record of the seemingly infinite number of significant events for future generations. Likewise, great fiction writers have drawn on events from WWII to create stories with themes that transcend generations. There are countless novels that take place during the tumultuous time period, but some stand out from among the rest. Here are some of the best WWII historical fiction novels from recent years. ‘The Book Thief’ by Markus Zusak While often touted as a novel for young adults, you shouldn’t let this book’s location in the bookstore fool you. Centered on burgeoning bibliophile Liesel Meminger during her childhood in Nazi Germany, this book leverages

You don’t have to be Indiana Jones to be a treasure hunter — and you certainly don’t have to go very far from home to do it, either. Beneath your feet could be countless treasures with both historic and intrinsic value, and metal detecting is a great hobby to bring them to the surface. In order to do that, though, you’ll need the proper tools to go along with your metal detector and ensure that you make the most of your hunt. Electronic Pinpointer If your metal detector gets nine-tenths of the way to whatever you’ve dug up, your electronic pinpointer will get you that last tenth. This tool is meant to narrow the scope of your search once you’ve dug your hole and save you some time and effort. Headphones Different types of metal will cause your detector to emit distinct tones, and you’ll be able to hear these tones better without the distraction

of background noise. Plus, in public places like beaches or parks, some people might not be very pleased by the constant beeping if you don’t have headphones. Shovel(s) The ideal type of shovel depends on a few different factors. If the find is deeper down, you might want a bigger shovel to start out. If it’s closer to the surface, a metal trowel might do the trick. If you’re on the beach, you’ll want a sand scoop. Just remember to refill all your holes once you’ve recovered your find. Pouch Many “detectorists” will bring something with them that they can put all of their buried treasure in. It’s a good way to ensure that you don’t lose anything you find. Rechargeable Batteries Don’t let a pair of dead batteries ruin the rest of

your hunt! Always have some spare batteries with you so if the batteries that you’re using die, you can still leave no treasure unexcavated. While you may not find buried pirate treasure or a massive gold nugget to cushion your retirement fund, you may find it is a great opportunity to spend some time outdoors and learn some interesting history about wherever it is you’re detecting.

How to Celebrate Indulgent May Holidays

H ow to F ind S uccess in a M onth of E xcess

Set the diets aside and poke another notch or two in your belt because May isn’t pulling any punches when it comes to sweet and savory holiday regrets. From National Hoagie Day and National Pizza Party Day to the holidays that really spell it out for you like International No Diet Day and National Eat What You Want Day, we’re all looking forward to an excuse to let our stomachs hang low this month. For those of you who plan on partaking, let’s take a look at the best junk food-related holidays this month and how to celebrate them! National Apple Pie Day Monday, May 13 Gather your friends and family around the table and dust off Grandma’s old recipes, because it’s time to treat yourself to the most American thing since, well, itself.

National Apple Pie Day is a great opportunity to spend quality time with your loved ones while baking the most traditional American dessert. Make the process a game by pairing off into teams for a bake-off; you can even pit the kids against the adults — with a little supervision of course. If you’re feeling a little lazy, throw an apple pie potluck and watch your store-bought delight steal the show as your audience praises your craftsmanship and attention to detail — just how Sara Lee taught you. National Hamburger Day Tuesday, May 28 As if one day wasn’t enough, it turns out that the entire month of May is recognized as National Hamburger Month! Meat lovers rejoice as patties of heavenly beef are passed around the table for all to enjoy. There’s no

shortage of ways to celebrate this patriotic pastime. From grilling out with the neighbors to making sliders for your new love interest, there’s a little something for everyone, especially considering the advances we’ve made in burger technology in recent years. If meat isn’t your thing, throw a veggie or tofu burger on the grill and season it to mouth-watering perfection. We won’t tell the beef purists if you don’t. Eat up, everybody. Happy holidays.
