Raphael Mazzucco | Motherland | 2024

Raphael Mazzucco's new collection of original artwork, 'Motherland', draws from his own experiences and memories travelling deep into Northern British Columbia last August with his brother. From the lush forests of Yoho National Park to the jagged peaks of Mount Robson, each piece in this collection serves as a love letter to the diverse landscapes of Mazzucco’s native land.

Motherland RAPHAEL MAZZUCCO

You really don’t know exactly what the landscapes are going to give you, it’s got such beautiful diversity to it.

Raphael Mazzucco’s artworks have long been reflective of the raw and wild beauty of his home country but never more so than with his latest collection, Motherland . In it, Mazzucco embarks on a deeply personal journey that traces his roots back to the rugged landscapes of Canada. Inspired by the untamed wilderness of his native land, Mazzucco's latest artworks offer a glimpse into the soul of a country rich in natural splendour and untold stories. Motherland encapsulates the remote and diverse beauty of northern Canada where vast expanses of wilderness create a rugged and awe-inspiring landscape that is both challenging and captivating. Living in Vancouver, Canada until age sixteen, his early career saw Mazzucco drawn to climates more alien to him, shooting across the various continents of Africa, The Amazon, Iceland and New Mexico. Having documented in his various ‘living landscapes’ the incredible countries he’s visited throughout his career in editorial photography, he was inspired to undertake his most personal shoot to date and finally create this stunning homage to his home country. Characterised by a vast and varying landscape, this body of work seeks to encompass the range of geographical features Canada has to offer.

From the serenity of expansive pristine rivers and lakes to the dense stands of coniferous trees, and steep climbs of the northernmost mountain ranges Mazzucco’s new collection boasts the scenic beauty of one the world’s most diverse territories. “It made sense to me, going back, and out there in a rural setting like Northern British Columbia it almost felt like going back hundreds of years. You just feel the wild in such a deep way, and the energy around you is less human.” – Raphael Mazzucco His new Motherland artworks are visually captivating and emotionally evocative pieces that beg further inspection. Interspersed throughout the collection are handwritten notes featuring the prose and poetry of Margaret Atwood, renowned Canadian novelist and poet. Atwood’s prose famously draws inspiration from the Canadian landscape, vividly describing the vast wilderness and rugged coastlines, capturing the essence of the country's natural beauty in her works. Her words encased throughout the layers of Mazzucco’s originals embellish an intimate and arresting tribute to the raw and wild terrain of his homeland.

Canada's largest ghost town, abandoned in 1935. This image was photographed from a boat about 100ft away. In order for the girl to get where she is located, she climbed up and walked 3 miles from the lodge through the dense forest to get inside.

Original Mixed Media Artwork, Encased in Resin Framed 156 x 123cm £23,500 Anyox

There is an abundance of wildlife throughout this area in Anyox, Northern British Columbia. To make this photograph happen we spent 30 minutes kicking the golden sand to give the photograph more texture. It was photographed in the morning on a very quiet beautiful day.

Original Mixed Media Artwork, Encased in Resin Framed 68 x 68cm £7,950 Dusty Echoes

This painting was my most favourite location, it was photographed after two hours on the back road from Anyox. The green trees felt like no other place on earth, it was almost like a fantasy, the altitude of the trees had such a unique quality. There was a beautiful, serene feeling at this location.

Original Mixed Media Artwork, Encased in Resin Framed 169 x 67cm £13,500 Edge of Eternity

This was also photographed in the Ghost Town, I wanted to make everything very graphic especially seeing the girl in the pipe it brought a beautiful contrast. I’ve wanted to go to this location for many years, it had such a beautiful feel throughout the day, inside the warehouse listening to all the stories about how 3000 people used to live and work there.

Original Mixed Media Artwork, Encased in Resin Framed 156 x 105cm £21,950 Pipe Dream

The night before we photographed this image was the closest we had camped to the ongoing forest fires in Canada at the time. Ash was falling on us throughout the evening yet when we went out the following day it was the perfect day to go down to shoot by the river.

Original Mixed Media Artwork, Encased in Resin Framed 67 x 67cm £7,950 River’s Edge Resillience

We drove by this location and I couldn’t forget it so we turned around and went to shoot there for this beautiful and very improvised moment.

Original Mixed Media Artwork, Encased in Resin Framed 156 x 93cm £20,950 Valley Dancer

In this piece I wanted to show the actual amount of space there is in British Columbia. It can feel like you are traveling for hours and hours and not getting anywhere, it's so gigantic and beautiful. It was also one of the most difficult pieces to photograph with the girl in the water.

Original Mixed Media Artwork, Encased in Resin Framed 144 x 100cm £20,950 Soloist

River Dreamer was shot at Lake Louise. You will notice in one of the photographs that the sun is trying to go through the sky but because of the wildfires it was very smoky. Lake Louise was probably the most beautiful lake I've ever seen; the colour of the water is just divine.

Original Mixed Media Artwork, Encased in Resin Framed 67 x 67cm £7,950 River Dreamer

This was photographed after a 4-hour journey on horseback to get to the river. Through lightning and rain, we made it to the bottom of the hill on the river to see sunlight for just one hour. I don't know how I didn't get my camera wet, travelling through the river the water was maybe 2 inches from my satchel.

Original Mixed Media Artwork, Encased in Resin Framed 65 x 67cm £7,950 Noble Wild

I did this double exposure to represent how it feels when you’re out in the wilderness. This piece has a very spiritual side to it for me.

Original Mixed Media Artwork, Encased in Resin Framed 80 x 105cm £10,950 Native Land

Anyox, British Columbia gets more rain than anywhere else in British Columbia, so the morning of this photograph I wanted to take advantage of the calmness. It took us a 4-hour boat ride and a 4-hour drive to arrive and given the usual rainfall this location could have been a nightmare but the weather for the 23 days that we were there was perfect.

Original Mixed Media Artwork, Encased in Resin Framed 169 x 67cm £13,500 Languor Tide

This was photographed at Mount Robson, the second highest peak in British Columbia, it towers over the surrounding peaks. In summer this is one of the finest views looking into the Rocky Mountains. Mount Robson Park and other parks make up one of the largest protected areas in the world, completely filled with wildlife such as Elk, grizzly Bears, Deer, Wolves. In order for us to shoot this we had to go down to the river and shoot very late in the day. I shot double exposure with my camera and layered the beautiful island with the model’s face.

Mountain Madness is such a beautiful example of what you really see in British Columbia. It has such a stunning wild feel to it, it's the power of nature right in front of your eyes.

Original Mixed Media Artwork, Encased in Resin Framed 105 x 105cm £13,500 Mountain Madness

We spent a magical day close to a town called Fort George resting with their horses and photographing them throughout the day. There must've been over 80 acres of land and they asked where I would like to sleep, so I decided to sleep right in the horse paddock with our tent. It was magical waking up to see all the horses around my tent in the morning they were very curious to know why I was there!

Original Mixed Media Artwork, Encased in Resin Framed 105 x 105cm £13,500 Wander InWonder

We shot this in Anyox at around 5 am just as the light was about to come up. The thing I remember most while taking this image was the sounds of nearby wolves howling across the water. This whole place was magical both visually and spiritually. We drove sixteen hours and took a four hour boat ride to get here. There is only one guide who can reach this place, so it is truly untouched.

Original Mixed Media Artwork, Encased in Resin Framed 169 x 67cm £13,500 Silver Morning

One of the most pristine places I have ever been, we just happened across it on the way to Anyox. Completely magical, the water was translucent with many animals close by with the dense forest around. This lake was like a secret garden and being there in the summertime made it feel even more dense. The model was absolutely amazing, having no fear and swimming across to the little nook for me to get a photograph.

Original Mixed Media Artwork, Encased in Resin Framed 169 x 67cm £13,500 Northern Reflection

I wanted to use all the nature and foliage that we came upon in this piece which we shot outside of where we were staying in the heaviest rainfall of the trip.

Original Mixed Media Artwork, Encased in Resin Framed 95 x 65cm £8,950 Taste For Truth

Raphael Mazzucco

In the world of fine art, few names resonate with the same level of reverence and awe as that of Raphael Mazzucco. Renowned for his captivating imagery that seamlessly melds the raw beauty of nature with the ethereal allure of the human form, Mazzucco stands as a titan in the realms of both fashion photography and contemporary art. Having garnered international acclaim in the world of commercial photography with high-profile campaigns in Vogue, Victoria's Secret, L'Oréal, Guess, and Sports Illustrated, Mazzucco is globally renowned not only for his editorial fashion imagery but also his celebrity portraiture of notable actors including Benicio Del Toro, Matt Damon, Susan Sarandon, and Elizabeth Banks. Following a two-year tour of photography exhibitions in Milan, Florence, Melbourne, Hong Kong, Singapore, Los Angeles, Miami, and New York, Mazzucco’s magnetising charisma made his home in Montauk a hive of activity for high-profile local creatives. His creativity flourished in the company of American artist, photographer and longtime friend and neighbour, Peter Beard; whose own portrait was famously painted by previous Montauk resident, Francis Bacon. An organic extension of the challenging and beautiful images he was already creating, Mazzucco’s fine artworks have been shaped by the artists he most admires and become deeply embedded in their rich cultural history.

In Mazzucco's hands, nature and fashion photography are transformed into

multidimensional resin artworks, infused with the energy of his deeply immersive shoots, and living terrain of his travels. Typically spending at least four weeks on location shoots, fully immersed in the local environment with a small team and a native guide, Mazzucco’s artworks show an unwavering commitment to documenting the untouched beauty of his surroundings. His compositions weave together elements of nature, sensuality, and the human form, inviting viewers to enjoy the interplay of photography, collage, and painted elements encased in layers of hand-poured resin. Drawing on some of his favourite artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Mazzucco often collages his location photographs, using double exposure and layering techniques that beg close inspection, with intricate new details that come to light with each look. Mazzucco has exhibited his work in galleries and museums around the world, including New York, Los Angeles, London and most recently America’s prestigious modern and contemporary art fair, Art Miami 2023. He has also published several books showcasing his photography, including "Culo by Mazzucco", a collaboration with music producer Jimmy Lovine and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, which celebrates the female form. Through his dynamic fusion of mediums and his unyielding commitment to artistic expression, Mazzucco’s ‘living landscapes’ continue to leave an indelible mark on the world of fine art.
