And as for country music, honestly, it just stuck with me. I’ve listened to every genre possible. But I also am really, really big into rock as well. Listening to country music now, there isn’t just one country music genre anymore. There’s country pop, there’s country rock, there’s all sorts of genres within the genre. So, I felt that country music fit me the best. Spotlight on Business: Tell us about your first song, your first gig, and when you realize music could be a career. Ella Campbell: So, the first song I wrote was very unintentional. I got a message from a guy named Brett Buchanan. He was doing an interview on Rogers called ‘There’s Always A Song’ and asked if I had an original song I could showcase. And I said yes - and I didn’t have one written. So, I just started writing, and a week before I had to do this on live TV, I wrote it. I mean, it turned out pretty good for being my first song. Looking back now, I probably wouldn’t have released it, but you know what? It was my first song, and I’m happy with it. It’s called ‘Rollercoaster’. The first gig I played was at the Grimross Brewery here in Fredericton, and it was great and awful at the same time. Playing in front of family and friends is much harder than playing in front of strangers. That night it was great - I had the best support system - it was just filled with family and friends coming to see my first show. I was up there shaking and freaking out and scared about getting the words right or wrong, but in the end it was awesome. I didn’t really expect to have a career in music at all. I mean, after I graduated, I was doing odd jobs trying to figure out what I wanted to do. Then, one year I ended up going to Cavendish and running into Tyler Joe Miller. I started talking to him, and he said that it was just kind of a fluke thing for him. I kind of took that and started posting on YouTube and that sort of thing. And then, after that first gig, I didn’t get another gig for about three months. And then things just kind of exploded to the point where I had to quit my job. I was getting so many gigs. I think I played like four or five times a week, and I was brand new.

Spotlight on Business: Tell us a little bit about yourself off stage. What do you like to do in your spare time when you’re not writing music or performing, if there is any? Ella Campbell: Well, you just said it. I mean, music on its own takes up the majority of your time as an artist, whether that’s songwriting or playing shows or social media- it’s a huge part of it. So, when I do get the time where I’m not doing that, I love spending a lot of time with family and friends. That’s another one of my passions. I’ll do that as much as I possibly can. Spotlight on Business: When did your passion for music begin? And what drew you toward country music? Ella Campbell: Neither of my parents are very musical. But I’m originally from Nova Scotia, and I’ve said this story in some other interviews as well, but I think it’s important to say again - I grew up next to Newfoundlanders. And if anybody knows anything about Newfies, they’re big into music, whether that’s Irish music, country, rock, anything. So, these neighbours of mine were naturally very musically inclined. I mean, they had a bar and a stage in their basement. From the time I was just little, I’d be over there singing songs and on stage, and yeah, that’s kind of how it started.
