STA students honoured Student environmental activists in Russell earned a special award from the Catholic Dis- trict School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) during its June 20 session. Trustees awarded a Certificate of Appreciation to the students involved in the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School Junior and Senior Envirothon Teams: Morgan Foster, Peter McCannel, Rachel Fiset, Noah Hill, and Jacob Poirer Hanniman of the junior team, Andrew Buchanan, Lauren Lassier, Kyra McCannell, David Silva Parent, and Michael Rayson of the senior team, and their coach, Ann Jackson. Jeudi dernier, Patrick Brown, chef du Parti progressiste-conservateur (PC) de l’Onta- rio, était de passage dans la région afin de rencontrer une famille locale, pour ensuite dévoiler un de ses engagements. En effet, dans le cadre d’une précam- pagne visant à faire rétablir le droit de véto sur les publicités gouvernementales parti- sanes, l’autobus du PC s’arrêtait à la rési- dence de RachelThériault, une résidente de Limoges. Le chef du parti déplore le fait que les familles de l’Ontario se sont vu refiler une facture de plusieurs millions de dollars en publicité afin de promouvoir la réélection du parti en place. « Je veuxm’assurer que l’argent des contri- buables soit dépensé pour des choses que nous valorisons plus, comme les soins de santé, l’éducation et les services pour ceux qui en ont besoin », a-t-il déclaré. Warning of ticks in Eastern Ontario

The Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) has issued a warning to residents of East- ern Ontario that blacklegged ticks, which can transfer Lyme disease to humans, are being found in an increasing amount of locations across Cornwall and the five east- ern counties. At least 20 per cent of the blacklegged ticks in Eastern Ontario are in fact carrying the Lyme bacteria, which has led the EOHU to declare the disease well established in Cornwall and the five eastern counties. It is important to note, however, that not all ticks in these areas are the blacklegged ticks. The chance of a tick transmitting Lyme disease to a human is very low if the tick is attached for less than 24 hours. Once it has been longer than the 24-hour period, the risk for Lyme disease is increased significantly. TheMedical Officer of Health at the EOHU, Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, advises anyone who believes a tick has been attached for more than 24 hours or anyone who develops flu- like symptoms or a growing rash following a tick bite to contact their healthcare provider.
