King's Business - 1921-05

THE K I N G ’ S B U S I N E S S they said: “ Come in, won’t you?” and eagerly the tru th was listened to. The dinner bell rang, h u t no one moved. “Go on,” they said. A fter a while a mes senger came saying th a t they were wanted in th e dinner-room , bu t no one moved. This was repeated, bu t eternal things made them spurn th e meal and instead they listened to th e Book. The worker said they ought to go and eat bu t th e re was no move un til the work e r’s story was completed. Even in an audience hungry for th e Word, such an unusual experience is seldom encount ered, and we praise Him for it. A Young Japanese Converted A Japanese vessel came into port from th e no rth and it was learned th a t th e w orker in San Francisco had boarded th e vessel th ere not knowing tLat th e steam er would re tu rn from th e n o rth ern po rt for which it was bound and come to San Pedro. The w orker wanted to leave th e ship, seeing th a t it had already been boarded in the no rth , and go to ano th er boat. How ever, he was led to speak to a certain man who could speak English, and found he was very n ea r the Kingdom, God having spoken to him through th e mes sage in p rin t while on, th e high seas. The way was explained "and Christ pre sented, and, to th e joy of th e worker, th is young Japanese accepted Christ. We saw him th e next day again and he was so glad we had spoken to him about his soul and asked if we could no t get a Bible for him so he could study the Word, Godl’s Mysterious Workings One evening ju st before sundown a vessel, a strang er in th e port and one not expected to touch here a t all, a r rived and was boarded late a t night. The men w ere forced to make a port as they had run ou t of food and for days had only w ater and crackers to eat. San Pedro was th e n ea rest port and th e ship came in from th e sea to get food. The whole ship was visited and several tim es th e worker, seeing a ligh t on th e bridge, made for th a t place, b u t was hindered. Y et before leaving th e ship he was led to go into th a t place and found a man all alone reading th e newspaper . , This was laid aside and th e man was dealt w ith and found to be very receptive. He finally accepted Christ and when he said his name was “W alker” th e worker was led to th ink of ano th er man by th e same name, th e first man who accepted Christ when th e work was sta rted here, really having a large share in th e s ta rt of th e work by

his clearness bf decision and th e letter he w rote speaking of his wonderful ex perience. The ship was described and the tim e th é vessel was here, etc., and finally he said: “Why, yes, I know th a t man, h e is my fa th e r!” This man was reached in December, 1912, and over eight years afterw ard s his son was met under such peculiar circumstances. Are not th e ways of the Lord wonderful ways? A nother Opportunity Grasped Another very refreshing incident was th a t which it was our lo t to experience a week ago,— ano th er very unexpected arriv al of a Canadian vessel coming in for fuel oil and which was to depart rig h t away. -The decks were swarm ing w ith people, th e crew, and in this case -it was hard to get a man in a room alone to deal with. However, th e worker felt that- th e re m ust be some fru itag e for God on th is ship calling .h ere so unexpectedly, b u t every tim e a man was dealt- w ith disturbance was encountered in some way or another and so th e trac ts were d istributed and men spoken to, b u t w ith no app aren t re su lt yet. The worker stopped, w ent over the same te rrito ry again b u t th e re was nothing bu t excitement and rush and everyone runn ing around like an ts in an ant-hill. However, th e faith of the worker was a t la st rewarded. A cabin, passed up on th e first rounds, was vis ited th e second tim e and entered and th ere was -th e man. He was a young fellow on his la st trip to England where he expected, to leave th e ship and settle on a farm . He had enough of the sea and yet was no t a Christian. He lis tened well. Again th ere was a distu rb ance bu t he was too interested to be bothered. All # lon e for th e re st of the time the* worker had a fine tim e preach ing Christ unto th is fellow un til he accepted Him. The ship had come but a couple of hours before th is tim e and left in th e m iddle of th e night, b u t now bearing along a man who had been reached for the Lord in th a t sho rt time. W orkers Being Trained God is honoring the Word and in answer to prayer several studen ts are already tak ing special train in g in this field. An u rgen t need- is the problem to tran sp o rt these helpers from the city to the harbor. A machine to tak e these men back and fo rth is made th e burden of our prayers and it is requested th a t friends join in th is prayer th a t it may be answered soon to enable us to press on in th is needy field.
