THE NEW HEREDITY “V isiting the iniquity of th e fathers upon the children” (Num. 14 :18 ), The bane of hum anity is bad here dity. We cannot get rid of it. “The fath ers have d runk th e cup of sinful pleasure, and the children have drunk th e dregs.” The wondrous th in g about th e Gospel is th a t it gives us a new heredity. I count th a t the very high est and sublim est statem en t of th e doc trin e of regeneration. A m an g rafting trees saws off a limb to p u t in th e scion. If the limb is ro tten , he h as to saw it off n earer to the tru n k . We are grafted in Adam, bu t it was dis covered th a t th e branch was ro tten , and then God began a t th e very begin ning, and grafted us in to Jesu s Christ, th e Divine Son of God. As from Adam we had th is h ered itary tendency to do wrong, so when we are grafted into Jesus Christ, and given th e etern al life, we have th a t influence impelling us to holiness.te-A. J. Gordon. ate m THE BROKEN SEAL If th e seal . th a t was placed upon the tomb of Joseph of A rim athaea had remained unbroken, death would have been to th is w ar-scarred, sin-cursed world a n endless sleep. “But now is Christ risen from th e .dead.” And be cause He lives, all who believe in Him are made free from the law of sin and death.
