In place of “Rest and R ecreation” we ought to change th e theine to “Rally to th e R anks.” PRACTICAL POINTS. (1) Godliness and gladsomeness are kindred spirits, and have a glori ous place before the Lord. (2) The g reat feasts furnished a foun dation for th e fam ily gatherings of Israel. (3) The feasts fostered a feeling of fel lowship, and helped to firmly fix th e ir faith. (4) The Passover was a finger post pointing to the cross. (5) F o r th e believer in the blood of Christ th e re is a purchased pardon and perfect peace. (6) The Pentecostal gift was the pro phecy and prom ise of power for every believer. (7 ) The first day of the week is the resurrection day and forever separ ates us from the seventh day. Lev. 23:39. Ye shall keep a feast. v. 40. Ye shall rejoice. This feast was the Consecration of joy. I t teaches us th a t they woefully m isapprehend the sp irit of joy who look for it anywhere bu t “ before th e Lord.” Joy is a duty to God’s children. No grief should unfit us for feeling th an k fu l joy for th e g reat common g ift of a common salvation.— Maclaren. v. 43. Your generations may know. The purpose of all th is was th a t they should never forget th a t th e Jehovah who delivered them from Egyptian bond age was th e ir God. Israel, however, did constantly forget and th e season be came largely a season of re st and recreation ra th e r th an a tim e to remem ber God, ju st as our own thanksgiving days in these times, w ith th e m ajority of people are taken up more w ith sports th a n w ith glad thanksgivings to God.— Torrey. Deut. 5:12. Keep th e Sabbath day. The Sabbath is alto g eth er a Jewish institu tion . The Sabbath was the seventh day. The Lord’s day is the first day. The Sabbath was a te st of Isra el’s condition. The Lord’s day is th e proof of th e church'd acceptance on wholly unconditional grounds. The Sabbath belonged to th e old creation. The Lord’s day belongs to the new. The Sabbath was a day of bodily re st for the Jew. T h e .L o rd ’s day is a day of sp iritu al re st for th e Christian. If the Jew worked on th e Sabbath he was to be pu t to death. If th e Christian does not work on th e Lord’s day he gives little proof of life, th a t is to say, if he does not work for th e benefit of the souls of men, th e extension of Christ’s glory and th e spread df His tru th . The ■ Jew was commanded by th e law to abide in his ten t. The Christian is led by the Spirit of th e Gospel to go forth.-^-Anno. Bible. The Jew ish Sabbath is a day of a dead Christ. To keep it is to memorialize His dead body in the tomb. The church stands for the living Christ and cannot join w ith th e unbelieving Jew in seeking to keep th e Saviour in th e tomb. The Lord’s day is the first day of a new period, no t th e last day of an old period.— C. H. M. Lord h a th com manded thee. The Sabbath was given as a command only to Israel. I t was given as a covenant to Israel between them and God th a t they m ight know He was th e Lord (Ezek. 2 0 :12 ). The Sab bath was never given to any other na tion b u t Israel (Ex. 31:13-16). The church of Christ is not commanded to keep it. The Sabbath is a p a rt of the
