THE BOOK CHRIST ENDOBSED The endorsement of Christ is an un answerable argum ent in support of Di vine Authorship. He set His seal on th e Scriptures, and w ithout the slightest reservation accepted th e ir Divine au thority. He reverenced them . ,He ap pealed to them. He quoted them . He declared they could never be broken. In strongest langu ag e He expressed His unwavering belief, in th e incidents of th e Old Testament. It will suffice to cite as conspicuous examples: (a) The Creation (Matthew 19 :4 ). (b) Noah and th e Flood (Luke 17: 26, 27). (c) Jacob’s Ladder (John 1 :5 1 ). (d) The cities of the plain (Mat thew 11:23, 24). (e) Lot’s wife (Luke 17 :32 ), (f) The Book of Jonah (Matthew 12:39-41). , (g ) The Ninevites (Luke 11 :30 ). (h) Naaman (Luke 4 :2 7 ). There are other incidents referred to, such as th e Brazen Serpent; th e manna in the w ilderness; th e sm itten rock. Our Lord, moreover, defended His God head hy quotations from th e Book of Psalms. • In His tem ptation His appeal was to th e Book of Deuteronomy (see Matthew 4:4, w ith Deuteronomy 8 :3 ). In un folding His mission to His disciples, and in His controversies w ith th e Pharisees, He continually fell hack on th e words of Scripture. “‘Moses w rote of Me” (John 5 :4 6 ), while in His la st hours on the Cross He ratified th e Scriptures, and afte r His. Resurrection He ta u g h t His disciples “ from th e things in th e law of Moses.” F o r references let th e studen t ponder such passages as Matthew 12:40; 22: 32-45; Luke 17:32; John 10:34, 35. Our Lord’s testimony is decisive.
