PerformaX Elite_Another Resolution Live Life at Its Best

Can you believe it? The final month of 2019 is almost gone. How did you fair with this year’s resolutions? Perhaps you vowed to start eating to live instead of living to eat. Maybe you promised yourself you would spend more time in the gym, get better grades, or devote more time to your spiritual walk. Whatever the case, by this time each year, most of us find our lives very much unchanged from the previous one. Yes, we were able to spend a few good weeks teasing ourselves, believing that “this is the year!” But since every PT knows it takes about 21 days to form a habit, you most likely observed the crowded fitness centers of early January fade quickly into morgues.

LIVE LIFE AT ITS BEST ANOTHER RESOLUTION: BY STEVEN NEW TON

Can you believe it? The final month of 2019 is almost gone. How did you fair with this year’sresolutions?Perhapsyouvowed tostart eating to live instead of living to eat. Not to be a scrooge, but as the years have gone by, I have become somewhat cynical about the whole resolution process. I have seen dieters give up on their dream after splurging on just one meal. I have seen the glow in a student’s eye burn out after they failed to do as well as they had hoped on just one examination. And I have seen a married couple, committed to spend more quality time together toget“reacquainted,”acceptastatus

quo relationship because of a single failed attempt. Sure, some will follow through with their resolutions and experience the esteem that accompanies success. But by far, most of us will look upon our resolutions as nothing more than ritualistic, further distancing ourselves from our goals and ultimately accepting them as unrealistic. It’s my belief that the only impractical part about “resolution setting” is believing that we can instantlychange theyearsofhabitwehave molded in just one day —New Year’s Day! Can good health be acquired in a moment? Can strength be gained in an instant? Change is challenging regardless of desire. It requires an intent to initiate, to stumble, to listen, learn, fine-tune and then re-initiate. It’s rarely immediate! Let’saccept thepersonalagreementswehave made with a tad bit of reality this year and recognize that we are dealing with an ongoing process. Instead of placing so much emphasis on New Year’s Day, take advantage of the 366 days of 2020 (it’s a leap year!) and realize

that each one of them poses an opportunity to begin anew. Today’s success or failure does not predict tomorrow’s outcome. Let’s enjoy the excitement that surrounds the beginning of a year and see each new year’s resolution in its proper perspective — an opportunity to reaffirm the direction we wish to live as we continue along this journey called life! Is your 2020 resolution to achieve a more healthy life or improve your fitness level? Let PerformaX help you reach your goals with PMX LiveSmart®. CANNABIS CORNER: HISTORY YOU SHOULD KNOW!

acceptedmedicalvalue, andwillcreatepsychological and/orphysicaldependence. Aschedule-5drugposes the lowest threat. LSD, heroin, andcannabiswereall put into the same schedule-1 drug category. This is extremely important because a common complaint that I hear from patients is the lack of researchtosupportmedicinalcannabisclaims. What most folksdon’tknow is that inorder forscientists to conductresearchonschedule-1drugs,theyfirstmust gainDEAapprovalandoftenupgradesecurityprotocols in their labs, which can be very time consuming and expensive. A lot of what we do know is anecdotal or hasbeen learnedviathenecessitytofindan immediate alternative forasickordyingpatient (ex:cancer,HIV, epilepsy, Tourette Syndrome, etc.). Though we have seenprogress ingettingFDAapprovedcannabisdrugs onthemarket(ex:Epidiolex), thiswillremainveryslow until the schedule classification is changed.

Before we dive into the science of cannabis, let’s look at its history. Cannabis is NOT new to the world of Medicine. It’s been used for medicinalandceremonialpurposes for over 4000 years (often used to

treat pain and headaches). In 1937, the US government put severe legal restrictionson itsuseby introducingtheMarijuanaTax Act. It is believed that some very savvy businessmen in the newspaper industry saw hemp, an inexpensive substitute for paper pulp, as a threat. Imposing a tax on hemp would protect their interests. Drugs, substancesandcertainchemicalsfound indrugs were grouped in 5 schedules (classifications) in 1970 via the Controlled Substance Act. A schedule-1 drug is deemed to have the highest potential for abuse, no

In November of 2016, Recreational and Medicinal cannabis use became legal in the state of California. Federally, it remains illegal. We’ll get into the modes of delivery next time, but until thenhere’sa fun fact:Noonehaseverdied from a Marijuana Overdose! (www.cdc.gov/drugoverdose/data/otherdrugs.html) Want to learn more?
