FEBRUARY 2023
DO A GOOD TURN DAILY! IT’S NATIONAL BOY SCOUT DAY
For over 110 years, young men from across the country have joined the Boy Scouts of America to learn valuable skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. According to the Boy Scouts of America, there are over 2.2 million youth members between the ages of 5 and 21 and approximately over 800,000 adult volunteers in Scouting organizations. On Feb. 8, we celebrate National Boy Scout Day to recognize the good deeds performed by over 130 million young men and women during the Scout’s 113-year existence. I joined the Scouts early in life, back when I was in kindergarten or first grade. One of my favorite memories from those early years had to be creating a Pinewood Derby car and racing it. Growing up in Dearborn, the parents of many of my friends and fellow Scouts worked for Ford or one of the other Big Three automobile manufacturers. They knew their way around these Pinewood Derby cars. My grandfather owned a tool & die shop that supplied Ford, so my dad took my Derby car over to his shop to get it fixed up. As soon as he entered the shop, the foreman approached him, incredibly excited about the Pinewood Derby car. He took control and ensured the car was at its maximum weight, the bearings were greased, and everything else was as perfect as possible. I finished in second or third place in each of the races. Unfortunately, my Scouting days were cut short as my family moved between second and third grade, and my new school did not offer the program. Even though I wasn’t in Scouts for long, my uniform has survived all these years. It was actually hanging in the office at Janet Davis Cleaners for a few months at the end of last year.
my brother-in-law about the Pinewood Derby. It sounds like things haven’t changed too much. Now the parents helping are automotive engineers, making the competition even more challenging. Even so, my nephews have been able to break the top three whenever they’ve competed. There’s definitely an element of chance involved, but my brother-in-law must also be a sound engineer if they’ve consistently been that successful. My nephews are always doing something exciting with the Scouts. They’re either making Christmas ornaments, helping neighbors rake their yards, camping, or doing several other unique and fun activities. I once filled in for my brother-in-law and went with the kids to a TreeRunner Adventure Park, where we zip lined around the woods. It was a really cool experience, and everyone had a great time. Regardless of whether your kids are in Cub, Boy, or Girl Scouts, they can learn plenty of valuable lessons in teamwork and essential life skills as well. Most schools have cut home economics courses, so Scouts offers an alternative for younger kids to learn how to sew and perform other skills. There’s also quite a bit of character-building involved, as many kids are scared the first few times they go camping. Joining the Scouts is a great way to encourage your children to learn valuable skills while making magical memories. I’m thankful for my short time in the Scouts, and I’m sure my nephews will feel the same way when they’re my age.
My experiences with the Boy Scouts continued when I became an adult. My nephews are in the Scouts, and I recently asked

Valentine’s Day demands most of the attention in February. This holiday is designated for couples to share their love and do things they greatly enjoy together. While this usually consists of dinner dates, a movie, and possibly even some dancing, some parents have a difficult time getting away. Maybe they can’t find a babysitter, or one of the kids is ill, causing them to cancel plans. Spending Valentine’s Day With the Family? Try Out These Activities
In today’s culture, we’re always trying to find hidden hacks to become more productive, especially when we’re at home. Nobody wants to spend hours of their week doing chores, like laundry, when they could use that time in other ways. It might sound surprising, but visiting a dry cleaner can actually make you more productive in various aspects of your life. Opting for dry cleaning will save you a lot of time, money, and frustration in the long run while also helping you streamline your days. Here are just a few of the many ways dry cleaning your clothes makes you more productive. NO MORE EXTRA TRIPS Janet Davis Cleaners and many other dry cleaners offer pickup and delivery for little to no extra cost. By doing this, you won't need to take extra trips to pick up or drop off your clothes. You also won't have to worry about losing your dry cleaning ticket. When your clothes are picked up and delivered, you don’t have to do anything more than put them away, giving you ample time to focus on other projects or needs. LONGER-LASTING CLOTHES Washing machines are not necessarily gentle on your clothes. Even when your washer is set on the hand-wash setting, your clothes will begin to lose shape and vibrancy. You want your clothes to fit perfectly and stay in the best condition possible. Dry cleaners will often remove stains and repair damage to your clothes to help them maintain their condition. This will help you avoid making an unnecessary trip to the store to buy sewing or cleaning materials. CLEAN HOUSEHOLD ITEMS Some of the most challenging things to clean are items around your home, such as comforters, curtains, and tablecloths. These Make Sure You Utilize a Dry Cleaner WANT TO BECOME MORE PRODUCTIVE?
You might think there’s no point in celebrating the holiday if you can’t do so with just your significant other, but you can turn Valentine’s Day into a family-friendly event. Here are a few activities to try if you’re spending Valentine’s with the kids this February.
WRITE LOVE NOTES TO EACH OTHER. Valentine’s Day is all about love, so what better way to celebrate it than by sharing your love with those closest to you? Take a moment and have every member of your family write love notes to each other. Encourage your kids to share their happy memories and explain why they love each person. This can be a fun and educational activity for your kids as you can help them with their spelling and grammar. HAVE A FANCY DINNER. You don’t need to go out to have an extravagant Valentine’s dinner. You can make one at home by incorporating the same ingredients as the dishes you would get at a restaurant. Or you can order from your favorite restaurant and pick it up. Use a fancy tablecloth, light some candles, and have fun with it. Don’t forget to include a special dessert; you can even make mocktails to amp up the fun. FINISH THE NIGHT WITH A MOVIE. Valentine’s Day is often one of the busiest nights of the year for movie theaters, but you don’t have to go out to enjoy a movie during the holiday. Head to your favorite streaming service and find some family-friendly romantic comedies to watch together. “The Princess Diaries,” “Lady and the Tramp,” and “Gnomeo and Juliet” are all great options.

4 Brushing Up on Cruise Etiquette
ALL ABOARD! Know Your Cruise Etiquette Before Setting Sail
After a slump in 2020 and 2021, cruises are back in a big way. If you’re planning your first onboard adventure — or it’s been a while since you last set sail — now is the time to brush up on your cruise
review the dress policy before you book your trip. Bring at least one formal outfit in your luggage for dinner, which tends to have an upscale vibe. The rest of your cruise wear should be casual but tasteful, leaving you looking put together. Most importantly, don’t
for breakfast or a mani-pedi is the best way to get on your fellow travelers’ bad side. Your cruise may also have a policy against it. Going to the bathroom is one thing; you’re only human. Otherwise, if you want the seat, stay in it. BE ON TIME. Treat your cruise ship like an airplane — if you’re not on time, it’s probably leaving without you. And if you are lucky enough to have the ocean liner wait, your fellow passengers won’t look at you kindly. Set your watch to ship time (not local time) and prepare to be back an hour before the deadline. That way, if you happen to be late, you’ll still be on time. You may miss out on an extra drink or souvenir shop, but nothing will ruin your cruise faster than being left behind at the dock.
