Fibre Box Association Introduces The ‘Innovation in Safety’ Achievement Award BY CHASE KAMMERER In a significant move towards promoting workplace safety, the Fibre Box Association (FBA) Safety and Health Committee proudly announc- es the launch of the “Innovation in Safety” Achievement Award. We de-
signed this accolade to honor plants and individuals or groups that have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to employee safety through ground- breaking innovations, leading to significant ad- vancements in workplace safety. The Innovation in Safety Achievement Award adds a valuable dimension to the annual awards bestowed by FBA/AICC, including the Perfect Plant

and Safety Excellence Awards. By introducing this award category, FBA aims to highlight and celebrate entities beyond conventional safety practices, showcasing a proactive approach to addressing hazardous risks and behaviors. To qualify for the Innovation in Safety Achievement Award, recipients must have developed or improved a safety innovation that addresses workplace hazards or behaviors. This innovation could take various forms, such as a novel device, process, technique, software, or any creative solution contributing to enhanced safety within the man- ufacturing environment. The criteria encompass innovations that correct employee behaviors, reduce repetitive tasks, or provide real-time information for proactive de- cision-making. Crucially, the innovation must be seamlessly integrated into the workplace and demonstrate clear improvements in safety per- formance. The award process involves an annual evaluation of innova- tions made in the previous year. Nominations can be submitted online via the FBA website, and both individuals and groups are eligible to nomi- nate plants, teams, or companies that meet the award criteria. Submissions must include a completed form and a detailed descrip- tion of the innovation, its implementation process, and its impact on workplace safety. The deadline to submit nominations for recognizing safety improvements made in 2023 has not yet been finalized. A distin- guished panel of safety experts from the FBA Safety & Health Committee has planned to meticulously evaluate nominations based on criteria such as uniqueness, successful execution, and demonstrated improvement in workplace safety. Recipients of the Innovation in Safety Achievement Award can expect to be duly recognized by FBA. Recipients can present their innovations in a webinar hosted by the FBA. The FBA plans to feature prominently the innovation in the FBA Report, on the FBA website, and at the FBA Annual Meeting. An invitation to award recipients to participate in an FBA webinar to maximize the impact and share insights with the broader community is a great benefit. This platform allows them to elucidate their innovations in detail, sharing the journey of implementation and the tangible results achieved through the process change. The Innovation in Safety Achievement Award marks a pivotal step in acknowledging and encouraging a culture of innovation in workplace safety. Now, you can add a central Texas location to the mix along with their official introduction into the world of heavy-duty box solutions. “We have most of the core competencies in Texas that we have in Portland. That’s our bread and butter,” Keevy said. “And when we were looking for this heavier duty in- dustrial grade corrugated product, we hooked up with the leader in that market. We decided to put in a facility to manufacture rather than just redistribute the Ox Box line of products.” Ox Box, a packaging icon for more than six decades, needs no introduction as a third-generation, family-owned manufacturer of the largest-made boxes, designed in any shape or thickness. Its origins stretch back to the 1940s as a supplier of wood boxes for the military. After World War II, they began manufacturing wood boxes for the commercial market, and today, under the leadership of its Owner, Guy Ockerlund, their products include corrugated packaging, export-compliant wood boxes, pallets, and skids as well as plastic shipping and storage containers. While the new location represents a significant change of geography, a major opportunity drew JCB Packaging to the Texas Triangle in good company with markets in the Lone Star State’s five largest cities — Houston, San Anto- nio, Austin, and Dallas/Fort Worth.
“Texas is so unique. It’s the only state you can drive for two days and still be in Texas, but there’s no triple wall corrugated in Texas,” Dodge said. “The nearest places to buy it have been Tennessee, Oklahoma and Louisiana, but not anymore, now you can buy it here.” Bringing the Ox Box brand of products to central Texas made sense, Keevy said. “We’re getting great reception in the marketplace, which is encouraging. Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.

volved including Chamber of Commerce officials, area business associates, suppliers, and customers. “We’ve been trying to do this honestly for about 10 years,” Ockerlund said. “We met with about five to seven companies and most of them were very interested until they understood what the investment was and then their interest started to wane.” Ockerlund could see, however, that Keevy and Dodge were ambitious and motivated. Texas will be the first Ox Box franchise with JCB implementing the systems and processes that have contributed to Ox Box’s success. “They could have figured it out on their own, but it might have taken a few years. We met with them and said, ‘Why do that? We’ll help you; we’ll fast track you, and we’ll teach you everything we learned the hard way so that you guys can get things up and running way faster than you normal- ly would and that’s what we’re achieving,” Ockerlund said. With thick corrugated board being as strong as wood yet one-fifth the weight of wood crates, the heavy-duty boxes provide a cost-effective alternative for shipping. Plus, it’s curbside recyclable, all of which aligns with JCB’s focus on developing environmentally sustainable packag- ing solutions. “A big component of JCB and Ox Box is our commit- ment to the green movement,” Dodge said.

“I know a lot of people are doing that come hook or come crook. They don’t necessarily have to, but it’s the way of the future.” Manufacturing heavy duty boxes brought with it a com- pletely new mix of equipment for JCB. Most prominent on the floor would be their investment in a 90-inch by 190- inch jumbo Bendazzoli Flexo rotary slotter with the ability to convert single, double, and triple wall board and pro- duce upwards of 10 boxes in just one minute. The heavy-duty press is specified to produce triple-wall boxes for everything from king-size mattresses and water- melons to commercial machinery and metal components and everything in between. The industry may refer to them as “Gaylord” boxes, but to Ockerlund, they’re simply Ox Boxes. Additionally, JCB Packaging operates a printer-slotter, semi-automatic stitch and glue finishing sections, vertical hydraulic Samco die-cutting presses, flat-bed die-cutting, and a 55-inch Compu-Size boxmaker for quick-turn, short- er run corrugated. Both company logos are emblazoned on the new fa- cility situated prominently on the Interstate 35 corridor. It’s a welcome sight to Ockerlund who is enjoying seeing his company name visible from the freeway. In Chicago, Ox Box is tucked away within an industrial park though it hasn’t hampered their longtime success.
“You couldn’t ask for a better location to drop an Ox Box in. That’s why we really put our shoulder into this be- cause we knew there is not a good service triple wall facil- ity in Texas and we knew if we could put a facility in here that was independently owned and really customer driven, we are going to do well,” Ockerlund said. “Once the word gets out that there is an independent manufacturer for triple wall in central Texas, they’re going to have their hands full.” The building was one of more than 20 that JCB Pack- aging looked at. Though it wasn’t in good repair, Keevy said the location was great and the open design, which RJE Rite-Size boxmaker with Compu-Size conversion for quick setup and single-color print section.

Economic activity in the manufacturing sector contracted in February for the 16th consecutive month following one month of “unchanged” status and 28 months of growth

Fiore, CPSM, C.P.M., Chair of the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) Manufactur- ing Business Survey Committee: “The Manufacturing PMI registered 47.8 percent in February, down 1.3 percentage points from the 49.1 percent recorded in January. This is the 16th consecutive month of contraction. Four out of five sub- indexes that directly factor into the Man- ufacturing PMI are in contraction territory, up from three in January. The New Orders Index dropped back into contraction terri- tory after one month in expansion. Of the six biggest manufacturing industries, three (Fabricated Metal Products; Chemical Products; and Transportation Equipment) registered growth in February,” says Fiore. “A reading above 50 percent indicates that the manufacturing sector is general- ly expanding; below 50 percent indicates that it is generally contracting. “A Manufacturing PMI above 42.5 per- cent, over a period of time, generally indi- cates an expansion of the overall econo- my. Therefore, the February Manufacturing PMI indicates the overall economy grew for the 46th straight month after one month of contraction (April 2020). “The past relationship between the Manufacturing PMI and the overall econ- omy indicates that the February reading (47.8 percent) corresponds to a change of plus-1.5 percent in real gross domestic product (GDP) on an annualized basis,” says Fiore.
