Pearland in Motion Winter/Spring 2020

HELLO, PEARLAND!

It seems like just yesterday I was sitting down to write a letter for the Fall Edition of Pearland in Motion . But just like this publication and the

programs we offer, we continue to move forward at an unbelievable pace. We are making great progress on a number of projects around town, all of which are designed to continue to move Pearland firmly into the next phase of our community growth and maturation. Recently we celebrated the opening of the state- of-the-art Fire Station No. 1 at Old Alvin and McHard Roads which used cancer

prevention research to actually change the layout of the building from previous designs to keep our professional public safety staff as safe as possible. There‘s another new fire station, No. 8, under construction at Shadow Creek Parkway, west of SH 288. Additional staff are budgeted for that fire station in this fiscal year and we received a competitive federal grant to add additional firefighters faster than originally planned. Another way

we are working to keep the community safe is with an interlocal agreement with the neighboring community of Manvel to help them with advanced police database software and to share data for better regional visibility of crime activity for our Pearland police officers.

A new bridge was installed as part of the Green Tee Terrace Trail project, one of two new trail sections being added as part of the trails master plan which one day will connect one end of Pearland to the other. This system of trails will add a new dimension to an already outstanding quality of life. In addtion to non-motorized pathways,

we also are connecting the community with new street extensions of McHard Road from Cullen Parkway to Mykawa Road and by expanding Bailey Road. And finally, there is a light at the end of the tunnel with the construction on SH 288 and around FM 518. It has been a trying process – I should know, I drive it every day–but the upgrades that we are starting to see make all of it worth it. The addition of toll roads on SH 288 will improve traffic flow going into town. The reconstruction of the FM 518 intersection between Business Center Drive and Smith Ranch Road increases capacity now and allows for future widening planned by TxDOT. I say this a lot, but it is an exciting time to be in Pearland, and I hope you agree. We are answering the question, “What’s next?” with excellent public services to match our community members’ high expectations and aspirations. I also hope you enjoy this Pearland in Motion and all of the great opportunities available right here in Pearland. Hopefully, I will see you on the trails!
