April is Dog Bite Awareness Month! Now is the perfect time to tell you all about dog bite cases and how my team and I can assist you with them. Most people believe that most dog bites come from aggressive dog breeds like Rottweilers and pit bulls, but that’s not always the case. Even the cutest and littlest of dogs like Chihuahuas and Pomeranians can bite you. Most dog bite injuries in Florida come from Labradors, golden retrievers, and poodles. Florida has very strict dog bite laws. If your dog bites someone, you’re held responsible for the incident — no matter what the scenario is or what type of dog you have. Florida Statute 767.04 states that “the owner of any dog that bites any person while in a public or private place, including your property, is liable for damages suffered by the person bitten.” This law allows the person bitten to receive compensation caused by the bite even if the owner is unaware of the dog’s aggressive behavior. If you’re at home and your dog bites a visitor, you can still be held liable. The only way to not be held responsible is if you have a sign in your window that says “Beware of Dog.” I want you to know that no matter how nice and friendly your dog is, having this sign displayed on your property is the only way not to be at fault if your dog bites someone. This exception is stated in Florida Statute 767.04. The only way you’ll be held responsible for the injury if you have the sign is if the person who was bitten is under the age of 6. Everything You Need to Know About Dog Bites It’s Dog Bite Awareness Month!
of cases. There are a few critical questions that need to be considered regarding this type of injury. These questions are:
• • • • • • •
Was the victim age 6 or older?
Did the dog bite occur on public or private property? Was a “Beware of Dog” sign displayed on your property?
Was the sign readable? Did the victim see the sign?
Does the dog owner have proof of rabies vaccination?
Does the dog have a dog tag and license?
Some people may not want to press charges for a dog bite if they know the individual and their dog. It’s understandable that you don’t want to hurt your friends and put them in an uncomfortable situation, but you should still file a claim if you’re severely harmed. Dog bites can induce pain and suffering and even leave a permanent injury. Hefty medical bills and potentially lost wages can also occur due to a dog bite injury. You deserve compensation as result of your dog bite injury in these circumstances. If a dog has bitten you or a loved one, allow us at the Law Offices of Matthew Konecky to assist you. Negotiating a dog bite settlement on your own can be difficult. Let us help you settle your case with years of experience behind us. We will work to get you the results you deserve.

MATT’S BOOK OF THE MONTH ‘Squeeze Me’ By Carl Hiaasen
Hello, newsletter friends! In last month’s edition, I talked about how I enjoy reading and wish I could join or create a book club. I also mentioned how I wanted to use my newsletter to share some of my favorite books each month. This month, I have a book for you that I really enjoyed — and I think you will, too! For those who haven’t read Carl Hiaasen, he is a South Florida Native who worked for the Miami Herald South Florida Publications. His novels have a true South Florida flare, and the characters are as vivid as South Beach. In his new book “Squeeze Me,” set in Palm Beach, Kiki Pew, a prominent member of the Geriatric High Society, suddenly disappeared during an extravagant gala. Pew is the founder of the Potussles, a group of women dedicated to supporting the president. When she disappears, the president declares her a

life characters gives you a sense that you know and understand them. “Squeeze Me” is the type of book that I would much rather read than watch a movie. Another Book for You! If you’re looking for some other great books by Hiaasen, I recommend “Bad Monkey.” This book is about Andrew Yancy, who has a human arm in his freezer. But there is a logical (Hiaasenian) explanation for this. Yancy assumed that a boating accident or shark attack fills

expert Angie Armstrong is brought onto the case when a mammoth python is found near the president’s motorcade. This book had me laughing out loud at yet another Hiaasen rollercoaster. The not-so- subtle take on politics, Palm Beach, and current affairs are right on the nose. This is a quick read and is light- hearted; take it with a grain of salt.
in the story’s gaps. But to solve the murder, he must work with a wild crew of unpredictable characters such as his just recent ex-lover, a fugitive from Kansas, the widow of the previous owner of the frozen arm, two real-estate spectators, a voodoo witch, and a bad monkey.
The highly entertaining storyline is especially relatable to us South Floridians. The cleverly written descriptions of its true to
Both of these stories will take you on a wild ride. Happy reading!

Get Outdoors With the Family Through Cycling
Just Like Riding a Bike
Cycling Is the Perfect Activity for All Ages
You likely learned how to ride a bike as a kid — according to a 2013 survey, about 94% of American adults did. Even if it has been a while since your last ride, most people agree you never forget how, and you don’t have to be in great shape to get started. Outside of walking, biking might be the most accessible exercise for all ages and ability levels. The beauty of biking is that it can be as relaxing or challenging as you want. The average kid learns to ride at around 5 years old, so the basics aren’t complicated. Biking helps young children get outside and gives them a taste of being a “big kid.” As a result, it’s excellent for their self- esteem as well as their fitness.
Meanwhile, those looking for a challenge can easily find one. If you want a strenuous workout, it’s easy to ride farther, increase the resistance on your bike, or pick a steeper bike trail to explore. Biking is only a cakewalk if you choose to make it one. Since it’s perfect for all ages, cycling is the ideal outdoor activity to do with your family, allowing everyone to be involved in quality time together while promoting their health. To get started, make sure everyone has a
bike they can use comfortably and a helmet that fits, plus understands bike safety. Once the basics are taken care of, you’re ready to hit the trails or explore the neighborhood.
Cycling is also perfect for adults who are new to exercise or need a low-impact activity. A short ride on a flat surface will get the heart rate up without feeling too strenuous, making it optimal for beginners. Older adults and people with knee problems also use biking as an alternative to other forms of exercise because it’s easier on their joints.
Even if you never learned how to ride, there’s no time like the present. You might feel a little silly at first, but the benefits of cycling will serve you — and your family — well for the rest of your life.
