Collins is not only a great collector, his descriptions are wonderfully humorous and especially welcomed in these trying times. Figuring out whether or not the invention serves its intended purpose, while admiring the engineering feats and art work, becomes an intrinsically enjoyable read. Collins has divided this collection into five categories. The Working Day includes the Nib Extractor from the late 19 th century, before there were fountain pens. This lovely sculptured office desk item also served as a paperweight. The Domestic Economy section highlights a “beautifully engineered mechanical fire blower with elegant brass cogs.” It was used to build up the embers of a fire.
