Build the Habit of Good Attendance Early

School success goes hand in hand with good attendance!

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP • Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.

• Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before. • Introduce your child to his teachers and classmates before school starts to help his transition. • Don’t let your child stay home unless she is truly sick. Keep in mind that complaints of a stomachache or headache can be signs of anxiety and not a reason to stay home. • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or your child’s doctor. • Teachers might ask you for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning. • Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member or friend to help. • Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session. • If your child is sick, check with your school about remote learning.

Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school— and themselves. Start building this habit early on so your child learns right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Good attendance will help children do well in elementary school, middle school, high school, college, and at work. DID YOU KNOW? • Starting in kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school. • Missing 10 percent (or about 18 days) can make it harder to learn to read. • Children can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two every few weeks. • Being late to school may lead to poor attendance. • Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.

Helping Your Child Build Success With Science, Technology, and Engineering

Encourage your child’s scientific thinking and investigation. Asking Questions and Making Observations • RESEARCH TO FIND ANSWERS Use your child’s questions, such as “Why do clouds float?”, to learn about science. “Let’s see if we can find an online video about clouds.” • OBSERVE THE WORLD Encourage your child to observe and ask questions about the world. For example, when walking by a construction site, stop to talk about the machines with the workers who work there. Investigating Living Things • LEARN ABOUT ANIMALS Take your child to the library to look at books about animals. “What is unusual about this animal?” “What does it use its claws for?” “What animal do you know that is like it?” Let your child choose a few books to take home. • OBSERVE ANIMALS AND THEIR BABIES Show your child an adult and baby animal in a book or on the Internet. Note what is different about the way the two animals look. Talk about how animals grow and change.

Recognizing Fact and Fiction • PLAY TRUE OR NOT TRUE To give your child practice in recognizing when statements are true or not true, play this listening game anytime. Ask your child to clap three times if the statement you say is true. Use statements like these: “Rain falls from the sky.”; “Meatballs grow on trees.”; “Night follows day.”; “Elephants have trunks.”; “Snow is green when it falls.”; “Earth is round.” Checking Hypotheses • USE YOUR SENSES Fill a bag with different items, but don’t let your child see them. Then ask your child to reach into the bag and use his sense of touch to tell what the item is. After guessing, have him pull out the item to see if his guess was correct. Exploring the World • TAKE VIRTUAL TRIPS Invite your child to use the Internet with you and visit the American Museum of Natural History in New York to learn about dinosaurs or volcanoes. Or visit the website for the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance in California. • STUDY THE NIGHT SKY Though children are not often out at night, take any opportunity to give your child a chance to look up and study the night sky. Share books about the moon and stars.
