SAFETY HELMETS VARIATIONS

BUNZL SAFETY & LIFTING'S MISSION IS TO PROTECT WORKING LIVES BY PROVIDING HIGH QUALITY SAFETY SOLUTIONS AND GIVING BOTH EMPLOYERS AND WORKERS PEACE OF MIND. Industries such as mining, construction and forestry legally requires head protection that complies with Australian Standards. Our head & face protection category consists of a wide range of solutions suited to various industrial applications and environments, all of which meet AS/NZS 1801:1997. Bunzl Safety & Lifting's range can be fitted and customised with a wide array of accessories and options such as logo printing, reflective tapes, miners’ lamps and chin straps. In addition, safety helmets can be integrated with other personal protective equipment PPE such as earmuffs and face shields. AS/NZS 1801:1997 The objective of this Standard is to specify protective helmets that are to be worn in a variety of occupations, in order to reduce the severity of head injury from hazards associated with such activities. The Standard specifies requirements for occupational protective helmets to protect wearer’s heads from falling objects in building and construction, quarrying, shipbuilding, forestry and other occupations with similar hazards. These requirements include the construction and material of the helmet shell and head harness, mechanical strength of the shell and finish of the helmet. Three types of occupational protective helmets are specified on AS/NZS 1801:1997 as per below:

STANDARD HAT

Featuring a front short brim, the standard cap style is great for attaching accessories such as earmuffs with ease.

VENTED

WARM AIR FLOWS OUT

Vents in the top of the hard hat provide air flow in hot environments.

COOLING AIR FLOWS IN

NON-VENTED

Suitable for most environments, particularly those with dust or chemicals.

FULL BRIM

The full brim provides added protection from

falling objects, sun and rain. This style can however limit the options on attachable accessories.

BUMP CAPS

Bump caps are adequate for protecting the head from light scrapes and knocks, however should not be used in place of hard hats (and where head protection is mandatory) as they do not comply to Australian Standards.

SNAP BRIMS

Providing protection from the sun, snap brims are sturdy and easily fit on to safety helmets.

FACE SHIELDS & VISORS

Clear polycarbonate face shields are high impact visors that attach to safety helmets and are used in many industries to protect workers against flying particles, liquid, chemical and molten splashes, radiated heat and glare.

SAFETY HELMET WORKING LIFE AND REPLACEMENT Information pertaining to the selection, care and use of safety helmets is specified in the AS/NZS 1800:1998. The Standard states that the average service life of a safety helmet is three years from the time of issue or earlier if the helmet has changed in colour, exhibits any signs of wear or damage due to impact or deterioration. Head harnesses should be changed at least every two years of use.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE To maximise the time your safety helmet will last, follow these tips:

CHECKLIST

Clean the safety helmet with soap and water and dry with soft cloth. (Never clean with cleaning agents or abrasive substances).

When storing safety helmets, it is important to store the item away from direct sunlight and chemicals.

CHECKLIST

Ensure you never modify or alter the helmet or harness, and never place anything between the shell and harness as this will compromise the effectiveness of it. Inspect your helmet at least once a week. By conducting regular checks, you can inspect abrasions and scuffing. If abrasions are more than cosmetic damage, you should replace the safety helmet immediately.

All compliant safety helmets should have an issue date sticker on the inside of the shell for wearers to record name and date of issue

They should have the year and month of manufacture stamp

It is the wearer’s responsibility however, to ensure all accessories fitted to safety head gear be fully compatible and according to Australian Standards. CUSTOMISATION Corporate branding and reflective tape options are available across the range to help create and maintain company image and visibility on site. There are various logo printing positions and colours available on orders as low as 20 units. Safety helmets fitted with reflective tape have been tested to ensure that the adhesive is fully compatible with ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) and polycarbonate materials. The different shapes and patterns have been designed to fit the helmets and enhance the day and night-time visibility of the wearer. Most patterns have been designed to also fit around safety helmet accessories such as hearing protection, lamp brackets and company logo.

A helmet material stamp must be visible – e.g. ABS, polycarbonate

The safety helmet should be inspected regularly to ensure the harness is correctly fitted and secure

The safety helmet shell should be visually examined for cracks, fading and damage caused by impact

If deemed unfit for use, remove from service and replace the item

Accessories and attachments must be compatible with Australian Standards

The shell shows signs of wear or degradation e.g. colour faded or stained There are any dents, cracks, nicks or gauges in the inner or outer shell The shell feels stiff or brittle, or appears dull or chalky
