WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF DENTAL PHOBIA?

“I was nervous before I got here.” “I was scared to make an appointment.” “I haven’t gotten my cleanings because going to the dentist makes me anxious. ” These are only three of the many phrases I hear from patients when I meet with them to discuss their oral health. Dental phobia is a real issue that affects thousands of people worldwide. In fact, according to the Journal of Dental Hygiene, 50%–80% of adults in the U.S. have some degree of dental anxiety. Furthermore, the Cleveland Clinic states that around 36% of Americans fear going to the dentist, and 12% have an extreme fear. At Bismarck Advanced Dental & Implants, my team and I want to ensure you’re comfortable as soon as you walk into our office. We want to change your perception of dentistry by sharing information, easing your concerns, and offering you an experience that will make you think differently about caring for your oral health. When I reflect on my conversations with patients about their dental phobia, I discovered three factors play a huge role in why some people fear going to the dentist. Today, I wanted to share my findings with you. MISINFORMATION When you have pain in your mouth or are trying to understand specific health conditions, you may come across false information and misconceptions. No matter what you search on the internet, you will read the “worst-case scenario” topics that may startle you — it might even stop you from making a dental appointment!

FEAR OF SOUNDS OR NEEDLES According to Cleveland Clinic, 2 in 3 children have trypanophobia (a fear of needles), which is normal! Most people grow out of this fear as they become adults.

However, some studies show that 16% of adults avoid getting vaccines or treatment because of trypanophobia. Some patients may avoid the dentist because they don’t want a needle to go anywhere near their mouths.

Today, many dentists will rub a numbing gel on your gums first so you don’t feel the needle as it goes into your gums.

Furthermore, some patients may be afraid of the sound of our equipment. When you visit a dentist’s office, you often hear sounds like drills, beeping, and running water. These noises can make you feel uncomfortable. If it makes you feel comfortable, please consider wearing headphones during your visit. Perhaps the soothing sound of your favorite tunes can put you at ease! PREVIOUS BAD EXPERIENCES Maybe you felt uncomfortable with your doctor, were embarrassed by your health condition, or may have had an unforeseen painful procedure. Despite your negative experiences in the past, continuing to go to the dentist is imperative. Please share your stories with your dentist before your appointment so they can make you feel as comfortable as possible. If any of these factors affect you, let us know! My team and I strive to make going to the dentist a fun and enjoyable experience for the entire family! We will do anything to ease your concerns and help you look forward to your

Additionally, when you were a kid, did your parents jokingly threaten to take you or your siblings to the dentist? Or that if you don’t brush, your teeth will fall out? While this may be a harmful prank, it can lead kids to equate bad behavior with the dentist.

GET YOUR SMILE BACK WITH SINGLE TOOTH IMPLANTS!

Missing one tooth can negatively affect your lifestyle and how your mouth moves. While it may not seem like a huge deal, losing one tooth can cause physical and emotional discomfort if left unattended. But a single tooth implant is a solution you can consider that doesn’t damage your neighboring teeth. WHAT ARE SINGLE TOOTH IMPLANTS? A single tooth implant is a permanent, artificial tooth installed directly into your jawbone. The implant consists of three parts: a dental crown supported by a titanium post and an abutment that connects the dental crown to a screw-like post embedded in your jawbone. The post will function like a root and support the implant as a natural tooth.

also be used to measure its precise location. After gathering information, your dentist will determine if you’re a good candidate for dental implants. If you’re eligible for implants, your dentist will then begin installing the implants. Single tooth implants typically replace premolars and molars, as these teeth experience the most wear due to eating and are susceptible to gum disease and decay. If you or someone you know are missing a single tooth or a few teeth, please contact us today! We would be happy to conduct an exam and see if you’re eligible for dental implants. Our team has installed dozens of dental implants — we know what to look for and what to expect. So give us a call! It would be an honor to help you improve your confidence and overall health.

WHY SHOULD YOU GET A SINGLE TOOTH IMPLANT? Some people hesitate to receive dental work because they don’t want their mouths to look unnatural. But with implants, your teeth will look and feel like natural teeth! Furthermore, having missing teeth can make you feel less confident. But with dental implants, you will have your smile back and be able to eat or speak without any difficulty! HOW DO YOU INSTALL SINGLE TOOTH IMPLANTS? There isn’t a universal way to install implants because it depends on your smile. Your dentist will collect information about your mouth’s exact size and shape so they can match the implant to it. CT scans may

When you go to the supermarket or drug store, you’ll come across many environmentally friendly products. But did you know you can use eco-friendly dental products? Not only are they good for oral health, but they’re also great for the environment! Here are three reasons to choose eco-friendly products for your oral health. YOU CAN HELP IMPROVE THE ENVIRONMENT! Consider Using Eco- Friendly Dental Products YOU CAN REDUCE PLASTIC WASTE. All the products you use for your oral health routine — toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, and floss — come in plastic bottles and containers. Although it’s recyclable, the plastic in your dental products cannot be recycled — they are sent straight to a landfill or dumped in our waterways. So, look for brands advertising sustainability on the packaging. ECO-FRIENDLY PRODUCTS ARE BIODEGRADABLE. Typical dental products are made with polyethylene and nylon, which aren’t biodegradable. Because of this, they can take many years to decompose. Luckily, eco-friendly dental products exist, like biodegradable, compostable, and plastic-free toothbrushes made of bamboo. YOU’LL EXPERIENCE A MORE NATURAL CLEAN. A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study has shown how the plastics in non-eco-friendly dental products can negatively impact the

reproductive system of lab animals they were applied to. Studies are still being conducted to see if those chemicals affect humans similarly. In the meantime, choosing environmentally friendly dental products made from mineral clay, sea salt, and plant extracts can help you avoid potentially harmful plastics found in many dental products. Furthermore, many types of mouthwash are made with fake dyes, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and other chemicals. Eco-friendly mouthwashes avoid synthetic chemicals and only contain all-natural and non-toxic ingredients. If you’re interested in purchasing eco-friendly dental products, you can find them at your local supermarket or buy them online. For more information about environmentally friendly brands and items, go online and search for “zero waste” dental products.

Many families mark Easter with Easter baskets, bunnies, painted eggs, and more. But do you know where these activities originate? Here are three origin stories for the most popular Easter traditions and activities. THE EASTER BUNNY COMES FROM GERMAN LEGENDS. You may have asked yourself how a rabbit produces eggs — that doesn’t seem possible! However, there’s a reason why a hare is an Easter symbol. In German writings from the 1500s, Duchess Rosilinda von Lindenberg wanted to do something special for the townsfolk who sheltered her after she lost her home. So, she colored eggs by boiling them in moss, hid them around the garden, and had the children search for them. When they found the eggs, they spotted a rabbit hopping away — and the kids thought the hare left them! Then, the tradition spread throughout Germany, and many families began to talk about the Osterhase (the Easter hare) and decorate eggs in honor of Easter. Historians believes this tale is the origin for the Easter Bunny and its pastel-colored eggs. PAINTING EGGS ORIGINATES FROM A UKRAINIAN TRADITION. When you go to the supermarket, you may notice egg painting kits you can purchase. But did you know that this activity comes from an ancient Ukrainian tradition? Citizens of Ukraine have a springtime tradition called pysanky . Before Christianity became the leading religion, citizens would paint eggs to welcome the spring season. Then, as Christianity grew, the activity was used to honor Jesus Christ and his resurrection. Today, egg painting is used to symbolize peace as war still erupts throughout the country. However, egg painting is an activity that many ancient civilizations participated in. For thousands of years, the Persians, South Africans, and Zoroastrians decorated eggs in wax, dyes, and carvings. The eggs, and the widespread practice within these civilizations, represent renewal and rebirth — characteristics that also describe the spring season. PRETZELS AND HARD-BOILED EGGS ARE USED TO REPRESENT EASTER. Today, we consider candy, Peeps, and other sweet treats as Easter snacks. But in 1450, Germans ate pretzels and hard-boiled eggs on Good Friday. It’s said that pretzels represent everlasting life, and two hard- boiled eggs symbolize Easter’s rebirth.
