FIX WHAT BUGS YOU
Make Tomorrow Better Today
Here at Franklin, we do our best to “Make Building Easy” for our customers. We believe that the easier we can make it for our builders to complete their projects, the more of an advantage we will have over our competition. When we can deliver the right product, at the right time, and at the right price, we provide a memorable customer experience that will keep them coming back to us again and again. We call this a “sticky customer.” Making building easy is a simple idea but challenging to do. Building a house is a complicated process, including material selections, managing subcontractors, and keeping it on schedule. We provide materials at many steps along the way. Some of them we produce ourselves including cabinets, countertops, doors, and roof trusses. Some of the products we install ourselves. All of this requires a great deal of coordination between the builder and the many departments at FBS. When we do this well, our customers will likely give us the opportunity to do it again. So how do keep customers coming back while also gaining new ones? We strive to get better at our craft every day by “fixing what bugs us.” Whatever it is that bugs us about getting the work done to satisfy the customer represents some type of problem to be solved. The problem may be small or large, and many times the solution is not obvious. The one thing we know for sure is that when more of our people are solving these problems, the happier our customers will be. Our goal is to have an army of problem-solvers, making things easier every day. To provide a simple example of what it means to fix what bugs you, I have a story from my personal life. Once upon a time, I did not have a designated place to store my car keys. Sometimes the keys would be on the coffee table, on my dresser, or in some random pocket. The result was that many mornings, I would be scrambling to find my keys — making me late for work! This bugged me and the people I was working with. So, I got a key holder, and I got in the habit of putting my keys there every day. I no longer struggle to find my keys in the morning. Problem solved, and now I have gained a small amount of time and energy to pursue more meaningful challenges.
At work, the missing car keys may look different, but the idea is the same. For example, if we have missing information on a customer order, everything comes to a screeching halt. This feels a lot like frantically trying to find your car keys in the morning, because now we must track down the information with emails and phone calls, delaying our ability to serve the customer. In this situation we ask ourselves, “What could we have done earlier in the process to ensure we have 100% of the information?” When we work together to make sure downstream needs are flowing upstream, we are that much closer to making building easy. When we as a company fix what bugs us every day, it all adds up over time. Eventually, we get to a place where we are serving the customer much better than our competition is. We call this the staircase of continuous improvement, where we form a habit of making improvement steps and sustaining them over time. We wish our competition well, but we certainly want to be better than them.

FRANKLIN’S EO FISHING DERBY Mike Hoskins of Pocatello sent this happy family fishing photo entry — now he’s earned Fishing Derby shirts
HOW WILL MY STOCK VALUE GROW?
for the entire crew! Mike’s tale of the fishing day is fun, too: “Took my daughter and my four grandsons ages 3–10, from Iowa, fishing. Thought I could make it a lean project. Had my bait in one spot, tackle box next to the bait, and my fishing poles ready to go.
Everyone who was an employee-owner on Dec. 31 of last year received a stock statement in July. You might be curious about how your stock value could grow over time. We call this wealth building — as in how will retirement wealth build over time? Now you can see the potential with an easy-to-use Wealth Calculator.
Then we set out to catch some fish. The first thing that happened was the worms came up missing because Garrett, the 3-year-old, wanted to play with them. Then the tackle box that was wide open got tipped over. Next thing I know, two of the fishing poles were tangled. So, I started putting all the stuff back into the tackle box when the 5-year-old asked me what I was doing. I told him I was trying to be lean on our fishing trip. His response was ‘You’re kind of fat.’ So, after a day of fishing, we caught 12. It was a lot of fun, but I’m tired and a little overweight.” Check out each month’s Fishing Derby winners on the company website, in the employee resources section. It is not too late to enter. Everyone wins a T-shirt and you become eligible for bigger prizes. The EO Fishing Derby goes through November. To enter, simply email your fish photos to Contest@FranklinBuildingSupply.com.

Everything Is Made Easier With Jesus Around!
don’t have a specific job each day. That is also what makes it a little difficult because I never know what to expect, and I need to be ready for anything, whether it is fixing a saw, repairing a table, or general maintenance,” Chuy remarks. Chuy tells us that the main focus of his job is to keep everything running smoothly and efficiently so more production is accomplished throughout the day. At the Boise Truss Plant, the pressure is always on to ensure that each aspect of the job is done with prowess and skill. When an error occurs in the beginning stages, it affects the whole project. There is no room for error, and Chuy gets things done correctly! When Chuy isn’t working, he enjoys spending time with his family. He is a huge fishing advocate and loves to go camping. However, his favorite thing to do is to saddle up and ride horses.
Without Jesus, or “Chuy” as we call him, things would not run nearly as smoothly as they do at the Boise Truss Plant. The team designs
roof trusses for many different projects. A truss is the foundation of many different structures and as you can imagine, it is paramount that our team does the job right. Chuy makes this possible! Chuy, a maintenance professional, has been a member of the team for 1.5 years now and recently gave some insight into his role at Franklin Building Supply and what it means to him. He stated that both his favorite and the most challenging part of his job are one in the same. “I get to do something new every day depending on where they need me and what needs to be completed for the day, so I
As you can tell, Chuy is an extremely valuable member of our team and we are grateful for him! Thank you, Chuy!
