Music That Can Soothe The Soul

Samuel to come and intercede on behalf of the nation and offer the sacrifice, Saul offered the sacrifice himself. When Samuel arrived he sternly rebuked Saul. Another time, Samuel gave Saul strict in- structions regarding what to do about a cer- tain enemy nation. Instead of wiping them

Saul was filled with God’s Spirit after his anointing by Samuel. God gave Saul a new heart and God even caused Saul to prophesy. But when confronted with an attacking army, Saul allowed his fears to cause him to not wait upon the Lord. Instead of waiting for

As we listen to godly music, the melody can soothe, motivate, or inspire us. The words can give us insight, hope, strength, courage, and encouragement. Words have a way of sticking in our minds better when connected with music. One night I was driving home from a meet- ing where I was viciously and unjustly, ver- bally attacked by a group of “godly” people. It was horrible. I was totally taken off guard and felt like I had been ambushed. On the ride home, I struggled with my thoughts as I al- lowed God to search my heart to see if any of

out as Samuel instructed, Saul let their king live and let his army keep the choicest animals for themselves. When Samuel met Saul, Saul gave excuses for his ac- tions. Samuel, under the direction of God, told Saul that the kingdom would be taken from him and

the harp. And it shall be that he will play it with his hand when the distressing spirit from God is upon you, and you shall be well… I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethle- hemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a hand- some person; and the Lord is with him.” Therefore, Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.... …And so it was, whenever the spirit from God was upon Saul, that David would take a harp and play it with his hand. Then Saul would become refreshed

through my mind over and over again. It began to flow out of my mouth, “Draw me nearer, nearer blessed Lord to thy precious bleeding side.” I started to sing it louder and louder. At first, I felt comfort in the thought of drawing nearer to the Lord, but then it hit me for the first time that the song does not say “draw me nearer to Your strong arms” or “to Your comforting hug,” but “to Your bleeding side!” It dawned on me that the only way to get to the Lord’s comforting hug is by relating to His bleeding. He suffered much worse than I did and He was much more innocent than I am and He did it because of my sins. I found comfort in this experience, which helped me in a small way to understand the unjust suf- fering He endured for me when He walked this earth. If you are being attacked right now, or if you have been attacked in the past and you have not gotten over it yet, I pray this song and thought will help you appreciate that you have been found worthy to suffer as He suf- fered so you can understand His suffering for you a little better. If you are mentally or emotionally under at- tack, or if the same worries or fears keep re- hearsing in your mind, choose a godly song and sing it out loud (even if your voice is as bad as mine) until the negative thoughts that have been occupying your mind no longer have center stage.
