take vengeance on him. And Allah is dear, possessor of revenge.” Finally, another reason for fasting is for a Muslim to take back his wife whom he had rejected, as stated in Qur’an 58:3-4: “And those who would for- bid their wives, and then they return from what they said, so freeing a neck (free a slave) before they

surrounding him. For example, he kept the tradition of the hajj, which was practiced by the polytheists of his day, except that he removed their idols from the Kaaba while keeping his own idol, the black stone. Similarly, he copied the fasting from the Jews and Christians, not realizing that in the Bible a day of fasting is a twenty-four hour time span, not the twelve or so hours which starts at night and ends at night. The fact is that Muslims have never fasted a day in their lives. They are simply feasting the entire month of Ra- madan and are much less productive dur- ing the days of Ramadan. Throughout the Bible, people fasted dif- ferent numbers of days. In the book of Es- ther, the Jewish people fasted three nights and three days (Esther 4:16). King David fasted six days (2 Samuel 12:18). In Jonah 3:7, the people of Ninevah fasted. Amaz- ingly, here not only the people fasted, but even their animals. Finally, our Lord Jesus fasted forty days and forty nights (Luke 4:2). Why do we Christians fast? We fast in order to be broken and humbled before God, seeking His will for our lives as our Lord taught us after He ascended into heaven (Matthew 9:15). That is when we began to practice fasting. There were some specific cases, such as casting out demons, which also required fasting. However, we do not fast just because others do as Mohammed declared in Qur’an 2:183: “O you who have believed, fasting is decreed to you as it was decreed to those before you, perhaps you may fear.” Not only is the month of Ramadan the month of fasting, but it is also the month of jihad, as we read in many verses throughout the Qur’an. For exam- ple, in Qur’an 9:111: “Surely Allah has purchased from the believers their souls and their money so that they may have the garden….” In Qur’an 61:11: “Believe in Allah and his messenger and perform jihad for the sake of Allah with your money and lives. That is the best for you, if you were knowing.” Mohammed stated that during the month of Ra- madan the gates of hell are closed and the gates of jinnah, (Islamic heaven) are open. Mohammed set a noble example for Muslim be- lievers to follow in that he had led many invasions during the month of Ramadan and that Allah had aided him and those who fought with him and blessed them with great victories. That is why Mus- lims continue even until today to perform jihad dur- ing the month of Ramadan. Therefore, should we continue to encourage and celebrate Ramadan with the Muslims? Another reason why Muslims fast is found in Qur’an 4:92, as Allah stated: “And it was not for a believer to kill a believer except by mistake. And whoever kills a believer by mis-

take so freeing a believer’s neck [from slavery], and

the blood-money will be paid to the family of the slain unless they give it as alms. So if the [killed] believer was from an enemy people to you, so freeing a believer’s neck. And if he was from a people between you and them a covenant, so blood-money is to be paid to his family, and freeing a be- liever’s neck. So who has not the means so fasting two consecutive months’ penance from Allah. And Allah was knowing, wise.” From this verse we learn several things. First, Muslims can have slaves who are be- lievers, and second, it is forbidden for Mus- lims to kill other Muslims. Third, if a Muslim kills another Muslim by accident, he must free one of the Muslim slaves and also pay money to the dead man’s family. Fourth, if the Muslim man who was killed

touch (having sex) each other again. This is what you preach with, and Allah is aware of what you do. So whoever does not find (a slave to be set free), so fasting two months in succession before they touch each other. So he who cannot do, so feeding sixty poor. This is what you may believe in Allah and his messenger….” Notice this case is similar to Qur’an 5:95. Feeding sixty poor men can be a replacement for fasting, which is really strange because Muslims are not doing a good work but are doing it as a pun- ishment for their sin. These are the reasons for fasting. Therefore, do Muslims really fast? The usual custom in the world is that people eat three meals a day, normally dur- ing the day, and then during the night they sleep. What happens if people change their day into night? Instead of eating breakfast at seven or eight in the morning, they will eat it at seven or eight at night, and so on with the lunch or dinner meals. After all, they will be sleeping all day, and they will be up all night. Now, can we declare this new practice to be fasting? Obviously, the answer is no, especially when we know that not only do they eat all night long but that they actually consume twice as much food with this new trend. Because of this practice, they gain ten or fifteen pounds after practicing this for just one month. This is exactly what takes place in the month of Ramadan in the lives of Muslim be- lievers. They do not miss anything, even their sexual activities as we have seen in our first article. Fasting during Ramadan brings forgiveness to Muslims. However, as we know biblically, without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sin (Leviticus 17:11, Hebrews 9:22). Mohammed was simply copying practices from all kinds of people

was an enemy, the Muslim who committed the mur- der must free a Muslim believer’s slave. Fifth, if the Muslim man who was killed belonged to a people with whom the Muslims had a covenant, the killer must give a ransom to his family and free a be- liever’s slave’s neck. Now what if the Muslim killer did not have a Muslim slave? That is when he must fast two consecutive months. Another reason was given in Qur’an 5:89, as Allah stated: “Allah will not hold you responsible for the mere utterance in your oath, but he will hold you responsible in regards to an oath taken seriously. So its atonement will be to feed ten poor persons with such adequate food as you feed your own fam- ilies with or to clothe them or to set a neck free. So who cannot find means, so fasting three days. This is the atonement of your oaths when you will have sworn. And keep your oaths. Likewise, Allah makes his verses clear to you, perhaps you may give thanks.” In this verse we see that a Muslim must fast to atone for his lies when he gives an oath. What about a Muslim who kills wild game on pur- pose? What is the punishment? Once again, in Qur’an 5:95, he must fast if he could not feed some poor people, as Allah stated: “O you who have be- lieved, do not kill game while you are on pilgrimage. Whosoever among you will purposely kill it, so its compensation the like of what he killed from the livestock of equal value, according to the judgment of fair persons among you, to be given as a gift on arriving at the Kaaba; or its atonement feeds the poor, or in fairness to that fasting, so that he may taste the ill consequences of his deed. Allah forgives what is passed, but whoever repeats it, so Allah will
