YOUR GUIDE TO PERSONAL INJURY IN THE BORDERLAND

OBSERVATIONS FROM Bataan Memorial Death March

On March 17, 2019, thousands of men and women from all over the world converged on the Southern New Mexico desert and White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) for the Bataan Memorial Death March. The march commemorates the forcible transfer by the Japanese Imperial Army of 60,000–80,000 U.S. and Filipino prisoners of war. The transfer began on April 9, 1942, after the Battle of Bataan in the Philippines. The prisoners of war suffered unspeakable abuse and torture as they were forcibly marched over 60 miles to awaiting trains. Thousands were tortured and killed along the way by Japanese soldiers. The march is conducted in honor of the heroic service members who defended the Philippine Islands during World War II, sacrificing their freedom, health, and, in many cases, their very lives.

The fighting men and women of the United States Armed Forces are a formidable force. I was awed by the strength and stamina of these soldiers. Thousands of young men and women donned full military gear and made the 26.2- mile trek. I could barely lift the 35-pound packs these men and women carry, much less haul it over the brutal terrain of WSMR for 26.2 miles. My hat goes off to all the participants. After the race, my family headed to San Diego for a nice spring break getaway. We stayed on Coronado Island, a beautiful spot that is also home to a major Navy base. While we played on the beach and ate ice cream at the Hotel del Coronado, members of the Navy were out in the ocean and on the beaches conducting training exercises. The sight of the soldiers toiling away just steps from us vacationers put into perspective the sacrifices our troops make to protect our freedom. A heartfelt thank-you goes out to all military members and veterans. The memorial march was also a vivid reminder of the sacrifices the “greatest generation” made in the name of freedom, both at home and abroad. It was a special honor to witness survivors of the Bataan March present at the race. If it were not for the sacrifices of all people of the United States and the rest of the free world during WWII, we could very well be living under a Nazi Germany or Imperial Japanese flag here in the United States today. The entire world would be drastically different if the free world had not stood up to Hitler and the Imperial Japanese. The march was a reminder of the importance of the United States as a global force for democracy. We must continue to fight against tyranny and oppression around the globe.

I was lucky enough to participate for the second time this year, choosing the 14.2-mile march over the more rigorous 26.2-mile marathon. Here are some of my observations from the march.

“THE MARCHWAS A REMINDER OF THE IMPORTANCE OF THE UNITED STATES AS A GLOBAL FORCE FOR DEMOCRACY.”

THE TOP 5 QUESTIONS ANSWERED: QUESTION 3

You have questions and we have answers. In this five-part series, we’re answering some of the more common questions we often hear. Here is the third question.

HOWMUCH IS MY CASE WORTH? There is no simple answer. Be wary of attorneys who tell you otherwise or make promises about how much money they can get you. We work our hardest to get you the maximum amount of money for your case — and we consider the “three S’s” when determining the amount of money a case is worth.

SEVERITY OF THE INJURIES: The worse you are hurt, the more money your case will be worth.

Set the diets aside and poke another notch or two in your belt because May isn’t pulling any punches when it comes to sweet and savory holiday regrets. From National Hoagie Day and National Pizza Party Day to the holidays that really spell it out for you like International No Diet Day and National Eat What You Want Day, we’re all looking forward to an excuse to let our stomachs hang low this month. For those of you who plan on partaking, let’s take a look at the best junk food-related holidays this month and how to celebrate them! Gather your friends and family around the table and dust off Grandma’s old recipes, because it’s time to treat yourself to the most American thing since, well, itself. National Apple Pie Day is a great opportunity to spend quality time with your loved ones while baking the most traditional American dessert. Make the process a game by pairing off into teams for a bake- off; you can even pit the kids against the adults — with a little supervision of course. If you’re feeling a little lazy, throw an apple pie potluck and watch your store-bought delight steal the show as your audience praises your craftsmanship and attention to detail — just how Sara Lee taught you. As if one day wasn’t enough, it turns out that the entire month of May is recognized as National Hamburger Month! Meat lovers rejoice as patties of heavenly beef are passed around the table for all to enjoy. There’s no shortage of ways to celebrate this patriotic pastime. From grilling out with the neighbors to making sliders for your new love interest, there’s a little something for everyone, especially considering the advances we’ve made in burger technology in recent years. If meat isn’t your thing, throw a veggie or tofu burger on the grill and season it to mouth-watering perfection. We won’t tell the beef purists if you don’t. National Apple Pie Day Monday, May 13 National Hamburger Day Tuesday, May 28

SEVERITY OF WRONGDOING: The worse the wrongdoer’s conduct, the more money your case is worth. We look for bad conduct like DWI or talking and texting while driving.

SEVERITY OF THE CRASH: Generally speaking, the worse the collision, the more the case will be worth.

Another important factor in determining your case’s worth is the amount of automobile insurance available. We work to ensure all sources of insurance are available to compensate you for your injuries. In this way, we maximize the amount of money you receive out of a settlement.

MY COPILOT IS A DOG

These are the following elements of damages that the negligent driver is required to pay if he or she causes an accident:

• All reasonable medical bills (past and future) • Lost wages and lost ability to earn wages in the future • Loss of household services • Pain and suffering • Mental anguish • Permanent impairment • Disfigurement

Keep Your Pets Safe on the Road

Many of us love taking our pets along for the ride when we travel. Whether we’re going on a road trip or just across town, nothing makes the car ride more fun than when our best furry friend is in the passenger seat. But, like our human companions, we want to make the ride for our pets as safe as possible. Every pet is different. Some love going on car rides and are well- conditioned for the road. Other pets, not so much. Before you start driving, know how comfortable your dog (or cat) is with the open road to minimize distractions. Here are some items to have on hand to make the ride as safe and comfortable as possible. HARNESSES Standard car seat belts aren’t ideal for pets. Instead, look for a safety harness that fits around your pet. Safety harnesses allow for some movement while keeping your pet safe in the event of an accident or sudden braking. Harnesses come in all shapes and sizes and are available at most pet retailers. BARRIERS Unlike harnesses, barriers give your pet a little more space that is just theirs. You can customize exactly how much space they may need, while keeping them in a designated part of the car and reducing potential distractions. Barriers come in all sizes, typically for SUVs, minivans, wagons, and hatchbacks. CRATES Though we’d love our pet to be right up front with us, some animals become very anxious in moving vehicles. To help reduce anxiety, crates are generally the best option. Look for crates that are safety-certified and built to withstand an accident. Also, make sure the crate is ideal for the size of your pet and has plenty of airflow for maximum comfort.

A reasonable settlement offer should include all of your medical bills, lost wages, a significant sum for pain and suffering, and other harms and losses. At Harmonson Law Firm, we will not accept a case unless we feel that we can get all of your bills covered and put a significant amount of money in your pocket after paying for attorney’s fees and case expenses. If an insurance company is not willing to fairly pay you for your loss, we are ready, willing, and able to take your case to trial.

Finally, on a personal note, it was a great feeling to don racing gear again after over a year off from any competitive running. I had a great excuse to take a break from running (thank you, Winn!), but I caught the running bug and really needed this race to get back into the swing of it. It was really satisfying to run a race like

Bataan, getting to the finish line knowing that I had trained my hardest and pushed my body to limits that seemed unimaginable. My hope is to push even further and complete the entire 26.2 miles next year. Thank you to all the volunteers, soldiers, civilians, police, and sheriff’s officers that made this race possible for all of us.

FOOD, WATER, AND EXERCISE When you’re on the road with your pet, don’t forget the essentials. Always have food or snacks at the ready, along with water. Store food in a zip-lock bag and water in a bottle, with a dish on standby. When your pup needs a drink, just pour some in the dish. For longer rides, be sure to let your pet out for a little exercise. Just like us, they need a break every once in a while.

Large cruise liners are detrimental to oceans, and airplanes emit large amounts of toxins into the air. However, you can cruise and fly with the earth in mind. Some cruise lines are working to reduce their impact by installing more eco-friendly lighting and materials, and flight experts recommend using “green” airports, choosing fuel-efficient airlines, staying longer, and traveling less.
