A Year of Struggle and Triumph REFLECTING ON 2023 AND LOOKING AHEAD The end of the year is a time of reflection for everyone, whether it be personally, professionally, or both. As we approach the close of 2023, I find myself taking stock of the tumultuous yet fulfilling year it was. 2023 has undoubtedly been marked by its need for adaptability and resilience. We lost three key staff members in a month this past spring, all for various reasons. An unexpected turn of events that compelled us to revisit our hiring strategies. Though difficult, the experience brought a silver lining: our new hires have proven exceptional in their roles. They have shown themselves to be superstars, filling the void left by their predecessors and adding fresh perspectives to our work. This year has also been about embracing new technologies to improve our function. Though we haven’t officially transitioned, we’ve begun implementing a new client management software, FileVine, which will make things much more streamlined. The software is expected to enhance our client communications and internal processes significantly. Amid the changes, 2023 brought us some significant successes in the courtroom. We achieved an important milestone in the personal injury sector, resolving a case we had worked on for five years. Another big win came in the criminal defense arena, where we managed to get charges of attempted first-degree murder reduced to misdemeanors. It felt like the culmination of years of hard work, and we were thrilled to see it come to a satisfying resolution. Looking to the future, our goals for 2024 are clear. We plan to build upon the strength and growth we achieved this year but in a more stable environment. However, it’s crucial to acknowledge areas where we faltered this year, particularly in communication. While we always strive for excellence, there were moments when we dropped the ball. Improving communication is at the top of our agenda for 2024. Outside of work, 2023 has also been a significant year for me. For the first time since 2020, I could travel more extensively. It was a year of reconnecting with places and people who mean the world to me. I spent quality time with my friends and family in Illinois, some I hadn’t seen in years. Likewise, my family and I had fantastic new experiences, and we spent considerable time with my wife’s family in Virginia. Though I usually find it hard to open up, I think it’s essential to acknowledge how our personal journeys each year impact our professional lives. This year has been extraordinary, marked by significant professional accomplishments, lessons learned, and meaningful personal experiences. As we close this chapter and look forward to the next, it’s evident that adaptability, resilience, and a willingness to improve are the keys to facing challenges and opportunities. And so, armed with these insights, we step into 2024 — grateful for the experiences and lessons of the past year and optimistic about the new beginnings that await us.

Holiday celebrations are some of the most exciting moments for kids, be it trick-or-treating or tearing open Christmas presents. But properly celebrating New Year’s Eve may be a struggle for the little ones. If you’ve let your kids try to stay up until midnight in previous years, you may have experienced sleepiness, tantrums, and cranky mornings the next day, which isn’t the best way to start the new year. Well, this time around, you can be better prepared! Thanks to countless clever parents sharing their tips and tricks, we’ve compiled the most genius hacks that will make this New Year’s Eve not just kid-friendly but actually fun! At your preferred bedtime, play last year’s New Year’s Eve countdown on the TV. Amp up the celebrations with a rowdy countdown, cheering, and glasses of sparkling apple cider! Then, bring the festivities to an end and get your kids ready for bed. It’s as easy as that! If they do stay up, make it fun! Of course, if you would rather stay up with your children, feel bad lying, or don’t think you could pull the wool over their eyes, then there are some creative ways to keep them entertained until midnight without a meltdown. • Number colorful balloons and let your children pop one every 30 minutes or hour. You can even fill the final balloon with confetti to celebrate New Year’s Day! • Have everyone dress up fancy to make your at-home party feel more like a New York celebration. • Create a bucket list together for everything you want to do in 2024. • Get outside and play with sparklers! • Every hour, turn off the lights, play a song, and crack some glow sticks for a dance party! • Make fun and easy party appetizers together. • Look through old photos and videos of the past year together. “Matt and his team were exceptional. If I could leave 6 stars I would. He took care of a speeding ticket that would have been a huge headache, and handled everything from A to Z.
