Is Your Pharmacy Culture as Good as You Think?
Reel in a Better Workplace With the FISH! Philosophy
Have you ever walked into a pharmacy, or any business, and felt the weight in the air? People doing the bare minimum, dragging through the day, and no spark? Yeah, I’ve been there. And I’ll be honest, culture wasn’t always my strong suit. I’ve always been the type of person who showed up, did the work, pushed hard, and expected everyone else to keep up. But that doesn’t always cut it. Back in 2008, I needed to fix the team culture in my pharmacy. Not because we had bad people, but because we had good people running on fumes. That’s when I discovered the FISH! Philosophy from Seattle’s Pike Place Fish Market ( yes, the place where people holler and throw giant salmon across the room ). It’s not just some feel-good poster on the breakroom wall. It’s a playbook for getting your team back in the game. WHAT’S THE FISH! PHILOSOPHY? It’s four rules. That’s it. Four simple shifts that take a crew from sleepwalking to locked in:
needs, surprising someone with a handwritten note, and helping teammates without being asked.
4. Be Present: This means fully
engaging with the task at hand and the people in front of you. When your staff practices this, mistakes go down, trust goes up, and the work gets done faster and better. And guess what? Your patients feel it, too. HOW I ROLLED IT OUT I didn’t just drop a book on my staff’s desks and wish them luck. Let’s be honest, reading a book doesn’t always sound like fun, especially after a long shift. So, I gave them $20 to read it. That’s right, I paid ‘em to learn, and there’s no shame in that game if it kickstarts external motivation, because guess what? I can promise you it won’t be long until they have that priceless internal motivation that keeps them inspired for free. Once the books were in their hands, I hosted a four-hour kickoff session with food, drinks, and real talk. We split into teams. Each group tackled one of the four principles. They brainstormed. We shared ideas. Then we posted those ideas on the wall for everyone to see. I wanted our team’s culture in plain sight.
You decide how you respond, and when one person takes control of their outlook, it spreads. Attitude is contagious, for better or worse. Choose wisely. 2. Play: If work can’t be fun, you’re doing it wrong. Play doesn’t mean being silly or unprofessional. It means unlocking creativity, reducing tension, and building a team that genuinely enjoys showing up. 3. Make Their Day: You want a team
1.
Choose Your Attitude: Attitude isn’t something that just “happens” to you; it’s a choice. You don’t get to blame a bad day on a rude customer or a messy shipment.
that delivers exceptional service? Start by teaching them how to make someone’s day. This goes beyond smiling and saying, “Have a nice day.” It’s about anticipating

Bad Job Descriptions = Bad Hires Your Job Post Is the First Impression, so Don’t Blow It
ENTER THE CUSTOM GPT JOB DESCRIPTION CREATOR
If you’re struggling to hire solid people, the problem might not be the talent pool — it might be your job description. Yeah, I said it. We’ve all seen cookie-cutter listings: “Looking for a motivated individual with strong communication skills …” You think that’s going to attract top talent? Nope, that sounds like a punishment, not an opportunity. Here’s the truth: Your job description is like your dating profile. If you don’t take the time to show off what makes your pharmacy a great place to work, you can’t be surprised when no one swipes right. A lousy job description doesn’t just turn away talent, it actively repels it.
To help solve this problem once and for all, I created a Custom GPT designed specifically for writing pharmacy job descriptions. This custom GPT that walks you through writing a damn good job description in just minutes.
Here’s how it works:
• You answer guided questions about your position, tone, work environment, and team culture. • The GPT processes your inputs and spits out a polished, professional, and tailored job description in seconds. • No more guesswork. No more clunky templates. Just the right words to attract the right candidates. RESULTS THAT SPEAK VOLUMES Since using the GPT, members have reported: • Faster hiring times, with more qualified applicants per opening. • Stronger culture fits because the tone and expectations are crystal clear. • A professional edge, and candidates notice the difference when your listing stands out from the crowd. Plus, the formatting, grammar, and structure are handled automatically, which means your job listing looks clean and credible, and gives potential employees confidence that you run a tight ship. YOUR NEXT GREAT HIRE STARTS HERE If you’ve been wondering why the right candidates aren’t knocking down your door, it might not be your pay. It might not be your hours. It could just be your job description. You’ve got an easy solution now. No stress, no fluff, and no more copy-pasting from outdated templates. Check out the Custom GPT Job Description Creator and put your
WANT BETTER PEOPLE? WRITE BETTER JOB DESCRIPTIONS
I get it, you’re busy. Running a pharmacy is no joke. But taking shortcuts when it comes to hiring costs you in the long run. If your listing sounds like it was copied and pasted from a 1999 handbook, you’re going to attract applicants who are just as generic. Or worse, none at all.
A powerful job description does three things:
pharmacy’s best foot forward because your next great hire is just one well-crafted job description away.
1. Tells the truth about the work and expectations. 2. Shows off your culture: Are you no-BS, team-first, fast-paced, whatever? Say it. 3. Paints a path forward: People want to grow, not get stuck. If you’re vague, boring, or confusing, you’re going to attract vague, boring, or confused people. Simple as that. And please, for the love of recruitment, proofread. Bad grammar or formatting screams disorganized and unprofessional.

Not Your Average Icebreaker Creative Team-Building That Boosts Morale and Cuts Turnover
If you’ve ever rolled your eyes at the mention of “team-building,” you’re not alone. We’ve seen enough awkward “trust falls” and stale icebreakers to last a lifetime. But here’s the deal: When done right, team-building isn’t fluff — it’s firepower. It keeps your crew connected, lifts morale, and builds a culture where people actually enjoy coming to work. When things get tough, the camaraderie created during these team-building events is what keeps your crew from falling apart. And yes, it’s possible to do it in ways that don’t suck the life out of your team. Let’s talk about team-building that actually works ( no laser tag required ). IT STARTS WITH CONNECTION We all know burnout is real. The fast pace of pharmacy work doesn’t leave much room to breathe. That’s why small,
consistent efforts to boost connection are so important. When your team feels connected, they communicate better, stay longer, and serve your patients more effectively. But team-building doesn’t have to be expensive or elaborate. In fact, some of the best activities are low-cost, low-effort, and high-reward. ACTIVITIES THAT SPARK FUN (AND RESULTS) Here are some non-traditional, low-cost ideas that can be adapted to fit any team: OTC Bingo: Turn over-the-counter product pushes into a fun game. Each team member has a bingo card with OTC items, and when they educate a patient and make a sale, they mark it off. The first to get a bingo wins a prize. Not only
does this boost sales, but it also keeps the team laughing, competitive, and most importantly, engaged. Pharmacy Jeopardy and ‘Who Said It?’: Turn team meetings into game shows with trivia based on medications, company

THE CURE FOR LAME STAFF MEETINGS Behind Every Thriving Pharmacy Is a Damn Good Meeting
• President: The moderator, timekeeper, and agenda boss • Secretary: The note-taking ninja and task tracker • Treasurer: The number-cruncher reporting KPIs • Parking Lot Attendant: Keeper of brilliant off-topic ideas for future discussion
With slim margins, heavy workloads, and big-box competition around every corner, you can’t afford to waste time on aimless, uninspired staff meetings. But here’s the kicker: You can’t afford to skip them, either. Team meetings are where the magic happens. They’re your chance to rally the crew, crush confusion, solve small problems before they become big ones, and reinforce your mission on a regular basis. We get it. Most staff meetings are soul-sucking time-wasters. They drag on, go off the rails, and leave everyone wondering why they bothered showing up. But it doesn’t have to be that way. In fact, when done right, team meetings can become one of the most potent weapons in a pharmacy’s arsenal. The key? A badass structure that brings clarity, energy, and purpose every single time. REFRAME THE MEETING Staff meetings shouldn’t be a box to check. They’re a strategic tool for rallying the troops, solving problems, and reinforcing the culture. Done well, they spark momentum, uncover hidden issues, and drive better service. Done really well, they actually become something the team looks forward to. Yes, seriously. RULES OF ENGAGEMENT A great meeting doesn’t happen by accident. Set the tone with clear ground rules that keep everyone focused and safe to speak up:
When everyone has a role, everyone has a reason to show up fully.
THE 5-PART STRUCTURE THAT KEEPS THINGS SNAPPY AND SMART Use this no-fail meeting flow: 1. Old Business: Check off what’s been handled. 2. New Business: Discuss updates, announcements, and plans. 3. KPIs: Hit two or three key metrics that matter. 4. Open Floor: Encourage bold feedback and fresh ideas. 5. Shoutouts: Recognize wins and fuel morale. And don’t forget, you need to close strong. Always end a team meeting by recapping the next steps, setting deadlines, and sending out the receipts (aka meeting notes). Boom. Done. Whether it’s a daily huddle, weekly sync, monthly deep dive, or quarterly strategy session, this structure flexes to fit. MAKE IT EASY. MAKE IT COUNT. Use shared documents, Slack threads, or voice-to-text tools to keep meetings organized and seamless. Less chaos equals more clarity. Use whatever tools you have to make these meetings as efficient and productive as possible. Remember, team meetings don’t have to suck. They can be sharp, energizing, and wildly productive. All it takes is a format that fuels focus, a team that shares the power, and a leader willing to raise the bar. Time to upgrade the meeting game and own it. It’s easy to implement and powerful when done consistently.

Be present.
Stay respectful.
Lean into curiosity.
Prioritize psychological safety.
The result? More voices, better ideas, and fewer passive-aggressive hallway rants. ROTATE ROLES AND SHARE THE POWER Forget the same-old “manager talks, team listens” setup. Rotate roles to create ownership and leadership in every seat:
Need help fine-tuning your badass team meeting agenda? We’re here for you. Reach out and let’s turn your next meeting into something your team will actually thank you for.

Teach, Don’t Tell The Vast Value of Educated Consumers
In today’s marketplace, being the best at what you do isn’t good enough.
including images in text increases a person’s ability to retain information by as much as 55%. If your current marketing is heavy on words, it’s time to refresh your approach in ways that open a person’s eyes and wallet. REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE. Above all, never neglect to acknowledge you’re a consumer yourself. What kind of marketing tends to attract your attention? Are you drawn to humor, or do you react more to a serious or emotional message? When a salesperson contacts you, are you interested in learning about every facet of their company or services, or do you just want the most pertinent information that speaks to your immediate needs or interests? Before launching a new campaign, consider how you’d explain what you’re selling to a neighbor or family member. Would you stuff your overview with eye-glazing industry jargon or make your words succinct and easily understood? Never forget you’re a customer selling to other customers. Genuine empathy and education will always win their trust — and money — better than any flashy gimmick or overblown explanation ever could.
Whether you’re selling granite or grapefruit, persuading consumers to purchase your products is the only way you’ll thrive and survive in business. While this statement is far from revolutionary, capturing a consumer’s trust and loyalty is a constantly shifting goal more difficult to achieve today than at any other time. You may have the most outstanding product or service in your industry, but your marketing efforts will likely falter unless you accept two hard truths about selling in 2025: 1. Consumers are bombarded with marketing attempts virtually every moment of every day — including your competitors’ — and your costly campaign can be buried in a mountain of cyber clutter in a millisecond. 2. Nobody should ever be expected to remotely care about what you’re trying to sell them unless you educate them on why they should. So, how do you maneuver through the mire and gain the attention of consumers? It’s time to skip traditional ads and transform your company into an educational resource for your customers! Here are three tips to help you turn your sales tactics into opportunities to train your customers to view you as the definitive go-to for their needs. DON’T RESIST GIVING AWAY SOME OF YOUR STORE. Every product for sale is a solution in search of a problem. If you want a consumer to fully understand why your product is the best answer to their concerns, merely telling them about it is one of the worst things you can do. Instead, show them why your solution matters. Nowadays, it’s increasingly common for companies to post blogs, white papers, or webinars on their websites or upload brief informational videos on YouTube offering expert tips on addressing their customer base’s areas of need. Don’t shy away from providing free expertise and advice before a sale, as giving an interested consumer a solution in advance may lead to greater sales — especially if your presentation leaves them with questions they’ll contact you to answer. In the current landscape, tomorrow’s sales often result from your ability to position yourself as a trusted resource today. USE PICTURES OVER PARAGRAPHS. When showcasing yourself to a potential sale, pictures will always speak louder than words. Studies have shown that

It didn’t stop there. We made it part of the culture. We celebrated “making someone’s day.” We encouraged people to take five seconds longer to really see the person in front of them. We lightened the load with humor. Most importantly, we reminded ourselves that our attitudes were choices we made every day. WHAT CHANGED? EVERYTHING. People started showing up differently. You could feel it. Better energy. Less drama. More teamwork. Better patient service. It didn’t just help our team — it lifted our business. And the stuff we started doing back then? Still part of how I operate today. Writing handwritten thank-you notes? That came from FISH. Letting team members pick their own job titles? That came from FISH. The surprise gifts, the little celebrations, the daily reminders that attitude matters? All FISH. This wasn’t some flavor-of-the-month leadership hack. It was a hard reset, and clearly it worked because I’ve been using FISH ever since. HERE’S THE TRUTH Most owners think their culture’s “pretty good.” And maybe it is. But good isn’t good enough in today’s world. You’ve got to be
intentional. You’ve got to lead it. And sometimes, you need to shake things up before people burn out or walk out. Don’t wait until your best employee quits. Get the FISH! book. Give your team a reason to read it. Kick it off with energy. Steal my playbook! I’ve got all the resources available for our Inner Circle members. Just search “FISH” in the portal. As for our Essentials members, a recorded training session diving deep into FISH will be coming your way soon. Bottom line? If your culture sucks, then fix it. If it’s okay, then make it great. You owe that to your team, your patients, and yourself.
Now stop reading, and throw the first fish .

One-on-Ones Aren’t Optional WHAT YOU’RE NOT ASKING YOUR TEAM IS HURTING YOUR PHARMACY
You know what wrecks morale faster than a slow-moving line at the register? Silence . When pharmacy employees feel ignored or overlooked, frustration brews under the surface until it explodes or they walk out the door. But there’s a simple, wildly effective antidote: the humble one-on-one . These aren’t awkward performance reviews. They’re not droning lectures. They’re quick, casual conversations that can revolutionize your team dynamic. Let’s break down exactly how to make them work and why you can’t afford to skip them. THE MAGIC FIX THAT ISN’T MAGIC Every independent pharmacy owner wants better team morale, stronger loyalty, and fewer meltdowns. Spoiler: You don’t get those from random staff pizza parties or passive-aggressive notes on the breakroom fridge. You get them from real conversations, ones that uncover what’s working, what’s broken, and how you can fix it. And here’s the kicker: It doesn’t take hours or management training. All it takes is just three simple questions. THE NO-FLUFF FORMULA Forget the scripts. Ditch the meeting invites. All you need is a quick 15–20 minutes (even five if you’re slammed), and this straightforward structure: 1. What’s working well? Let your team brag a little. What’s clicking? What makes them love their job? 2. What’s frustrating? Here’s where the gold lives. This is when you learn the printer’s too far from the computer, the phone cord is too short, or someone’s dealing with a daily annoyance you could solve in five minutes.
3. How can I help? Don’t guess. Ask . Your team will tell you what they need if you open the door. Boom. That’s it. No clumsy small talk, no marathon meetings. Just meaningful, targeted insight. CONSISTENCY BEATS COMPLEXITY The power’s not just in the questions, it’s in the habit. Hold these one-on-ones regularly. Quarterly is the sweet spot, but monthly is even better for smaller teams. And don’t overthink it. A stand- up chat by the register works just as well as a sit-down in the office. FOLLOW UP OR FALL FLAT Here’s where most owners drop the ball. You listened, but did you act? After
every meeting, shoot a quick summary or jot down action steps. It shows you were paying attention, and it builds ironclad trust. Pro tip: Solve at least one issue, no matter how small. That $3 pack of red pens your technician asked for? It might just be the best investment you make all quarter. YOUR BOLD SUMMER MOVE Summer’s slower, so that means no excuses. Start these one-on-ones now, before the chaos of flu shots and holiday prep kicks in. They’ll change your culture, strengthen your team, and put out fires before they start. Because in your pharmacy, silence isn’t golden, it’s dangerous. Start talking.

policies, or even memorable patient quirks. Laughter builds bonds, and yes, everyone knows that patient.
Dress-Up Days and Gratitude Walls: Theme days bring out our creativity, whether it’s ‘80s throwbacks or pajama day. Pair it with a gratitude wall where staff could leave sticky notes with shout- outs, and you’ve got morale magic. Contests and Food-Based Fun: Bake-offs, smoothie contests, and potluck lunches are always team favorites. Friendly competition with a dash of sugar or protein goes a long way. Pitch Your Product or Speed Learning: Have staff present OTC products like “Shark Tank” contestants or rotate through five- minute “learning stations” to refresh rarely touched topics. It keeps learning fresh and interactive. Outside-the-Pharmacy Bonding: Sometimes, you can just pay for your team to have fun without you. Send the delivery drivers to go bowling on the company card. Or let pharmacy techs hit up margarita night together. You don’t always need to be there, and sometimes, the best bonding happens when the boss steps out. SMALL MOVES, BIG RESULTS There’s no need to throw a company-wide retreat or spend thousands. Even just one of these ideas a month can shift the
energy in your pharmacy. Let smaller teams do their own thing. Rotate activities. Focus on fun, relevance, and flexibility. Owners, here’s the takeaway: Team-building doesn’t have to be a production. It just needs to be intentional. Think small, think fun, and think personal to your pharmacy’s personality. You know your team better than anyone. Pick what fits. And if you need help brainstorming or want to create a plan, reach out. We’ve got tons of ideas that don’t involve name tags or conference rooms. Need more ideas? Reach out anytime! Our coaches are always happy to help you create something that sticks.
