Our NewZoo MEET THE NEWEST FURRY MEMBERS OF THE UNDERWOOD FAMILY
Loungin' with Lenny
I f you’re a longtime reader of my newsletter, then you know all about my English Labrador Rawson. He’s been the perfect buddy to me for many years, but lately, he’s taken on a new role: big brother. This year, Priscila and I have welcomed her golden retriever, Paco, and a cat, Lenny, into our home. Rawson has really been the only dog in my home for so long now that he took on a reluctant older stepbrother role with his new fur siblings. Lenny was the first to join us. He was actually never supposed to be part of our family! Priscila really wanted some animal affection since Paco wasn't immediately able to join her. She had raised Paco since he was just a few weeks old, and she was missing him. (We were still in the
painstaking process of getting him into the U.S. — a process that was complicated by COVID-19.) So, we agreed to adopt a cat, and Priscila chose a cat named Dylan from PetSmart. The next day, when we went to pick up Dylan, his littermate, Lenny, attached himself to me. Needless to say, we adopted both of them! Dylan ended up not being a good fit for our family, so we brought him back in hopes that he could find his permanent home. But Lenny has been a great addition! Even Rawson agrees. He was very gentle with Lenny at first, casually sniffing the new intruder before accepting him. The two of them even snuggle up together when they sleep — stereotypes be damned. Shortly after adopting Lenny, we received word that Paco would be flying on standby from Brazil to Miami, but because of the pandemic, there were limited options for his flight. His journey was slated to be long, too. He had to fly from Canoas, Brazil, then to São Paulo, Brazil, then to Peru where he would spend one night, and then finally he would land in Miami. For two weeks, we held our breath, wondering if that day would be the day that Paco would board a flight. We were ecstatic when we finally received word that there was room for him on a flight. Once we got to Miami, we had a whole other mess with customs to sort out, but finally, Paco was back with Priscila. I know
Paco is so happy to be with Priscila and his new family!
she feels happier having a little piece of home here with her in Georgia, and Paco is the happiest dog I’ve ever met. He’s very well-trained, too. Paco understands Portuguese since that’s how Priscila trained him, yet he’s picked up on the English commands I say to Rawson or even to him. And even at 7 years old, he’s playful and loves any and all toys. Rawson, who is 10 years old, tolerates his rambunctious dog brother, but he’s started to play with Paco every once in a while. I think he’s accepted that his siblings aren’t going anywhere anytime soon! They’ve become family. Rawson, Paco, and Lenny may get their fur everywhere and keep us on our toes with their sibling antics, but I couldn’t imagine our home without them.
Our good boy, Rawson
Everyone can agree on nap time.

TOP 5 HEALTHY LIFE HACKS
TO HAVE AN AWESOME MORNING
G etting your day started with coffee isn't always enough. Sometimes, you need to give yourself an extra boost, especially when you have little energy or trouble focusing. For an awesome start to your day, here are five tips to get you going right off the bat.
Take a quick morning walk — and have your meetings on the go. Morning meetings can make us want to fall asleep again. Don’t spend all of them sitting down if you don’t have to! Not only will morning walks help you wake up, but they can also add some extra physical activity to your day.
Wake up 5 minutes early. What’s the power of five minutes? It can be more than you think. Spend this time doing simple breathing exercises or a quick meditation so you can get focused for the rest of the day. If that’s not your style, you can prepare a quick to-do list for your day ahead. Either way, it’s always nice to have a little extra time for yourself without losing too much sleep.
Write in your journal. Who says you have to journal at the end of the day when you’re tired and ready to sleep? You can journal in the morning about what happened yesterday and the things you’re looking forward to that day. Journaling can remind you of your daily goals and motivate you to stick to your commitments.
Pack your lunch (or snacks!). Staying on track with your goals starts with having the energy to do them. Plan a healthy balance of fats, vegetables, carbohydrates, and proteins. This can be as simple as assembling dips, carrots, wraps, and salads each morning.
Start with green tea, then coffee. A cup of coffee at 7 a.m. can leave you burned out by 10 a.m. Try swapping it with green tea for a more gentle wake-up call. After that, you can brew your favorite coffee to keep you going strong. This practice also might help you consume less caffeine overall!
It’s time to try these tactics to jump-start your day!
HOW DO I KNOWWHEN IT’S THE RIGHT TIME FOR A NURSING HOME FACILITY? Caring for a loved one is an admirable pursuit. When you devote your attention, finances, and compassion to an aging adult, you are providing your loved one with a safe, caring home. However, it can be just as nurturing to find a nursing home or assisted living facility for your loved one. This is how you know it’s time.
the point of your knowledge, then it’s time to find experts who can support them. You can still help them create a space that feels like home, visit regularly, and communicate needs with staff.
Your quality of life is declining.
As a caregiver, you sacrifice time to yourself, socializing, and sometimes even your own health. That’s normal, but when your overall well-being suffers as a result, then you may need to consider finding alternative care options for your loved ones. Start by hiring an at-home nurse or aide who can care for your loved one at certain points throughout the week. This will offer you some relief. You should consider a care facility for your loved one if you are physically unable to care for them any longer. Remember, you deserve to be healthy, too.
It becomes too expensive.
Surprisingly, at-home care may be more expensive than nursing home care. Your loved one may be able to receive the same level of care without having to spend as much money. It may seem callous, but it can be extremely beneficial to save on care expenses when it’s feasible for your loved one and your family. Have this conversation with your loved one and other members of their care team to determine how much of a factor this may be. Regardless of why you made the choice, if you believe your loved one is the victim of elder care abuse in a facility you trusted with their care, our team at the Law Offices of William F. Underwood, III, P.C. can help. Call our office today to learn more.
Their care becomes advanced.
One of the biggest hurdles that comes with caring for another person is your level of expertise. If you have nursing, health care, or other medical service training, you may be well-equipped to help your loved one. But if your loved one’s needs develop past

Strange Workers’ Compensation Claims
TO PROVE YOUR CLAIM CAN BE WON, TOO!

Because her home was thus a “work environment,” Sandberg was compensated for her injury. While voluntary work events are not traditionally categorized viable for workers’ compensation, Jordan was able to prove that the event wasn’t quite so “voluntary.” Jordan was asked three different times by the
Getting injured at work can raise many questions, but perhaps one of the biggest questions that comes with filing a workers’ compensation claim is whether it will be accepted or denied. In an effort to ease your worries, we’ve compiled a list of some strange workers’ compensation claims that claimants won. With Brené Brown’s Bestselling Book ‘DARE TO LEAD’
How many leaders do you know who will admit to their mistakes openly and honestly to their team? How many leaders have you heard ask their team for direction? How many leaders are willing to step aside so someone else can shine? Chances are if you know that leader — or if you are that leader — then you understand the future of leadership, according to author, researcher, and teacher Brené Brown, Ph.D., author of “Dare to Lead: Brave Work. Tough Conversations. Whole Hearts.” In this book, Brown details her seven years researching and gaining a better understanding of leadership. She interviewed business leaders at both small and large companies, asking questions that revealed what great leadership looks like. Together with her research team, she learned why certain workspaces thrive and grow while others, with seemingly just as powerful of ideas,
wither and die. And it all boiled down to one thing, Brown says: courage.
In “Dare to Lead,” Brown examines the four pillars of courageous leadership and how business leaders today can practice and perfect it. Brown teaches the four pillars through her consulting work and has seen radical changes in organizations that practice courageous leadership. Brown offers examples — from well-known CEOs and within her own business — to walk readers through real-life applications of courage and how to create stronger teams through vulnerability. Brown exposes how business cultures that don’t practice vulnerability are ineffective as a result. She theorizes that often, these workspaces are filled with fear, uncertainty, and scarcity. To remove these negative traits, Brown offers leaders a road map to build
their courage while practicing vulnerability and creating happier work environments.
Brown has spent the past two decades researching and breaking down emotional concepts into tangible goals for her readers and followers. She is the owner of The Daring Way, a consulting firm that helps businesses develop vulnerability in leadership and the workplace. She is also the host of the podcast “Unlocking Us” and has one of the most-watched videos of all time, “The Power of Vulnerability.” You can learn more about Brown’s work and find “Dare to Lead” at BreneBrown.com.
