Learning Humility
As we get older, we begin to lose some of the abilities we once had. When that happens, it often becomes difficult for us to ask for help, which makes it difficult for the people around us to help us. We must honestly face the issues God allows to come into our lives. But that’s not easy because our pride gets in the way. We don’t want to give up our rights or what we think we should be able to do. We certainly don’t want to share it with anyone else. Pride keeps us from receiving the help we need. One day when I was writing my journal, I said, God, keep me humble. But I had to go back and correct it. Instead, I wrote, God, make me humble . Pride keeps us from accepting what God brings into our lives. We fight and resist the Lord. This creates problems not only for us as older people but also for our family and our caregivers. They know what should be done, but we’re not willing to do it. That’s why this chapter is called Learning Humility .
