OCTOBER 2023

UNLOCKING THE MAGIC OF READING REIGNITE YOUR LOVE FOR BOOKS DURING NATIONAL BOOK MONTH

Books have an incredible power to inspire and help us learn new things about the world around us. You can lose yourself in a work of fiction, identifying with the characters and feeling like you’re experiencing their journey alongside them. Nonfiction books provide us with unlimited knowledge and information. If you want to learn more or do better, there are books out there to help you reach your goals. October is National Book Month, and there’s no better time to pick up a new book! I absolutely love to read. My joy of reading started very early, before I could walk or even talk. It all started with my parents, who read to me every night before bed from when I was born until I was old enough to read by myself. When I was a baby, one of my parents would hold me while the other read to me. Sometimes, the whole family got in on it. My grandpa bought me a Dr. Seuss book shortly after my 3rd birthday. I think this was my mom’s first introduction to Dr. Seuss, as I can clearly remember her asking my grandpa if he was reading actual words from the book! Once I entered high school, I read a book that changed how I looked at the world. It was “Rich Dad Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki. This book redefined my relationship with money and helped me develop a goal that I would become a millionaire by 25 (a goal I’m still working on today). From then on, I exclusively read business books. I started reading about famous businesses and entrepreneurs and how they found success in life. These books helped me start my own ventures and businesses throughout high school and college. These days, I don’t get as much time to read as I used to. I currently have a list of 100 books I want to read, and I constantly receive new recommendations from people. I’ve even started to listen to audiobooks on Audible while driving, but I find myself listening to

podcasts more often than audiobooks. Most of the time, I’ll listen to podcasts with specific authors to see if I vibe with their style. If I do, I might add a book or two they’ve written to my list. I’m not the only one in my household who loves to read; it’s a family affair! My wife loves to read, but she has difficulty finding time to read like me. We read to our daughters as my parents read to me, which helped both of them develop a love of reading. My youngest daughter will actually yell across the house if we forget to read to her before bed. Reading is a serious business! According to a survey conducted by WordsRated, 50% of Americans have not read a book in the past year, 22% haven’t read one in the past three years, and 10% have gone a decade without reading a single book. You're missing out if you haven’t read a book in a while! You can learn a lot from other people’s experiences. With nonfiction books, you get a lifetime of knowledge distilled into something tangible you can read in a few weeks. If you’re looking for something new to read and have any interest in business, I highly recommend “The E Myth” by Michael Gerber, “They Ask, You Answer” by Marcus Sheridan, and “Simple Numbers, Straight Talk, Big Profits!” by Greg Crabtree. These three books were incredibly informative and inspirational. Reading is a great way to increase your knowledge and escape from our day-to-day stressors. I hope you all can find an enjoyable book or two to read this month!

Sometimes, dogs are more than just a man's best friend — they are heroes. When the Israel Defense Forces brought Chris Willingham, a Marine specializing in training military dogs, a small German shepherd and Belgian Malinois mix puppy in 2006, he knew she was special. Willingham named her Lucca, and in 2008, the pair deployed for their first tour in Iraq, where they spent countless hours together searching for improvised explosive devices or IEDs. When Lucca smelled a bomb, she'd lie down and wait for Willingham, an action they repeated so many times that the pair seemed to read each other's minds. In fact, the duo became so successful that when platoons suspected they were heading into especially dangerous territory, they requested the team by name. The Incredible Story of Lucca, the Explosive- Detecting Dog Who Saved Lives

DON’T LET COFFEE STAINS RUIN YOUR DAY OR CLOTHES!

Fall has officially arrived, and now we can participate in our favorite seasonal activities. By now, many of us

have already visited our favorite orchard to pick some delicious apples, taken a hayride around a local farm, and lost ourselves deep in the

labyrinth of a corn maze. Football season is also underway, and many will head

up to East Lansing later this month to watch the Wolverines and Spartans duke it out. There’s just so much to do during the fall season! While fall brings us plenty of new and familiar experiences, it’s also a season full of specialty drinks. Head to your local Starbucks, and you’ll notice way more people in line than in the past few months. As the warm weather drifts away, more people drink coffee regularly to stay warm and alert. It also doesn’t hurt that this is the only time of year to get the fan-favorite Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts. Picture this scenario: You grab your regular coffee order from Starbucks on your way to work. You stumble on your way out the door, causing the coffee to splash onto your clothes. It’s easy to replace your coffee, but what about your clothes? Thankfully, we’re here to help remove those pesky coffee stains from your favorite work outfits. Whenever you bring your stained clothes to us, we’ll walk you through the cleaning process before working diligently to clean them so they look brand new, like we did for this customer: “This was my first time here. I’ve never had such a great interaction with a business. Ash was fantastic! So professional and kind. Walked me through every step of the process and put my mind at ease. I brought in a dress shirt as a last-ditch effort with some stains I thought would never come out. The shirt is spotless, and it was delivered right to my door! Highly recommend.”

After returning from their second tour in Iraq, Willingham received orders that the Marines were restationing him at the Marine Security Guard School. But before he had to leave, he was allowed to choose a new handler for Lucca. Willingham chose Corporal Juan Rodriguez, whom he sensed was the perfect match for Lucca. And he was right.

Lucca and Rodriguez picked up where she and Willingham left off until one day in 2012. The pair were four hours into their patrol in southern Afghanistan when Lucca located her second IED of the day. However, when she moved closer to the device to lie down — it exploded . Rodriguez quickly ran to Lucca, where he discovered she had lost one of her front paws in the explosion. He applied first aid, a tourniquet, and called for a medevac, never leaving her side. She had suffered burns to her neck and torso, and doctors had to amputate her front left leg. However, in less than a month, Lucca was back to running around with the same spirit as before her injury but was now retired from her day job. She was reunited with Willingham and lived the rest of her days with him and his family peacefully until her passing in 2018. Lucca led more than 400 patrols during three combat tours in her career. She found 40 confirmed insurgents and countless explosives, and she never had a single human casualty during her six years of service.

A SEASONAL WARDROBE SHIFT How to Keep Your Wool Clothing Pristine

When the seasons change, our wardrobes usually change as well. Our shorts, short- sleeved shirts, and bathing suits go into the closet or attic, and our jackets and sweaters become a part of our everyday attire. Ideally, you had your warmer clothes cleaned before you put them away for the summer, but you might be unsure after all these months. We put out a request last year asking you to return hangers and were amazed by your response! So many people returned hangers, but we still need more as the shortage continues. Thank you to all who have returned hangers recently! Please, keep up the good work! Thanks for Returning Them! THE HANGER SHORTAGE CONTINUES

If you had your clothes cleaned by us, there should be a telltale sign whether they’re clean or not. Give your sweaters a pinch, and you should feel tissue paper if we cleaned them before you put them into storage. If specific items don’t have tissue paper, you should bring them to us for cleaning before you wear them again. Now that cold weather is on the horizon, many of us are pulling our wool sweaters and slacks out to help keep us warm. Wool is an incredibly unique fabric that requires extra care to keep its shape and stay as pristine as the day you bought it. The first thing you should understand about wool is that it needs time to recover after every wear. With clothing made from other materials, you can usually wear them day after day without having to worry about the garment stretching or losing its shape. Wool is a different story. It’s best to wait at least

24 hours between wears when it comes to your wool clothing to avoid distorting the shape of the item. When you remove wool clothing, you shouldn’t ball it up for the laundry, fold it up, or even hang it on a hanger, as folding it will cause creases, and hanging will make it stretch. Place it over the back of a chair or flat surface to give it time to breathe before you fold it. And don’t feel like you need to wash it after every wear. Wool has natural antibacterial and odor-resistant properties that help it stay clean. If your wool garments become stained or develop an odor, then it’s time for a cleaning. Wool garments have particular care instructions you need to follow carefully if you plan to clean them yourself, but you can always bring them to us, and we’ll take care of it for you!
