WHAT ATHLETICS TAUGHT ME 4 Foundational Lessons From Sports for Business Leaders

If you’re a sports fan, May is one of those glorious months when everything starts to align. Baseball season is just heating up, hockey and basketball playoffs are well underway, and even soccer leagues have championships around this time. While sports are entertainment for many of us, I know firsthand that it’s the culmination of hard work for the players on the court, ice, or field. I played football competitively throughout high school and college. I was honored to be a captain on my team, and I have many great memories from the gridiron. I don’t wear shoulder pads or a helmet today, but every day, I “suit up” to go to work with four foundational lessons that playing football gave me. While these lessons may not translate directly to business, I believe having each of these principles as a foundation of your character is important to finding success. DISCIPLINE Not practicing is easy. Not confronting the mistakes you made in the last game is easy. Not winning is easy. No one wants to be on the losing side of a game, and it takes tremendous dedication for athletes to practice, prepare, and perform so they can become winners. The same can be said in business. I want my employees to want to be winners. I want them to develop the habits of winners by holding themselves accountable when they make mistakes and relentlessly chasing what will improve our business and their careers. It’s not easy, but with discipline, it’s possible. AMBITION Ambition and discipline are very similar. As an athlete, if you are disciplined enough to prepare every week in grueling practices, you can create a mindset of ambition. You want to see that the work you have put into preparing for the game has paid off and that ambition can drive you forward. Similarly, I want my 32 employees to have the mindset that they will

win. Together, if we can put in the discipline, we can create a strong work culture driven by ambition.

ADVERSITY The drive to want to win is a valuable mindset, but you’ll always face variables you can’t prepare for. Injuries, penalties, or an unforeseen move from the other team can create challenges for athletes. The same can be said in business. No matter how hard you work or how dedicated you are, there will always be moments beyond your control. But just as in sports, the business leader who stays patient, focused, and determined to fight through adversity will be the one who succeeds. It’s those who panic or lose sight of what they prepared for who almost always lose. Facing and dealing with adversity are inevitable in business. It’s how you cope that determines your success. COOPERATION In sports, you’re always working or interacting with someone. Whether a coach or a referee in a game, sports will teach athletes the power of finding a way to work with anyone. You have to do it in order to win. Likewise, businesses must find employees who are cohesive and come together to get the job done. They may not always like each other; it’s rare to find a company where every single person loves everyone. However, they must work together, and they must do so effectively. Sports teaches you to do that. While athletics taught me these foundational lessons, you don’t have to be an athlete to succeed in business. However, implementing these foundational lessons can be the difference between winning and losing in your business. –Darin Garman

THE EXCITEMENT OF AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL Kickin’ It Down Under

While obscure beyond the country’s borders, Australian Rules Football is the most popular sport in its eponymous home country. Locally called “footy,” it’s a different beast than American football and rugby, sporting many unique rules while being an exhilarating spectacle. You’ll love the Australian Football League or AFL if you’re into sports. AFL looks more like rugby than American football. Players aren’t clad in padded uniforms and helmets like their peers across the pond; they wear the simple jersey and shorts combo standard among rugby and soccer players. The game is played with a ferocity not dissimilar to rugby, but several differences make it substantially distinct. When watching the AFL, you’ll notice the field is very different than other sports. The field is oval- shaped and much wider than American football fields. It’s also slightly longer, measuring at least 130 yards. Why so big? It’s necessary to handle

the 18 players on each team. That’s a swarm compared to 11-player American football teams.

ball — they must kick or punch to pass it. Players can rarely hold on to the ball for long due to the large teams. As a result of these rules, matches are fast and fluid. Consequently, stricter rules on tackling ensure players survive the game. Tackling is restricted to between the shoulders and knees, so it’s not as integral to the AFL as to rugby and American football. Lastly, players must kick the ball through goalposts to score; they can’t punch or carry it. Each side has four goalposts: two marking the outer goal and two marking the inner goal. The inner goalposts are relatively close together and taller, so kicking it through nets 6 points. The two other goalposts are outside the inner posts, and kicking it through those is worth one point. After four 20-minute quarters, the higher score wins. AFL will be thoroughly entertaining for football and rugby fans. It’s an underrated gem with some of the fiercest action in sports. So, grab a vegemite sandwich, slam a Tim Tam, and tune in!

Unlike its counterparts, the AFL is all about punching and kicking. Players can’t throw the

DEFENDING THE HIGHLANDS

SCOTLAND’S MUST-SEE CASTLES

From the heights of Castle Hill to the idyllic waters of Loch Duich, the historic castles of Scotland stun tourists and history enthusiasts alike. Today, these castles are well-maintained and ready to receive visitors from around the world. If you want to explore the beauty of the highlands from the rocky ramparts of Scotland’s greatest castles, these are three landmarks you need to visit. EDINBURGH CASTLE Located amidst Edinburgh’s Old Town — a World Heritage Site — the daunting and long-standing Edinburgh Castle on Castle Hill is a bulwark that has defended the Scottish capital for nearly a millennium. The military still uses parts of the formidable ramparts, but the rest serves as a

can’t-miss tourist destination. The castle also houses the Crown Jewels of Scotland, known as the Honours, and famed cannons, like Mons Meg, one of the grandest pieces of medieval artillery ever constructed and given to King James II in 1457 A.D. DUNNOTTAR CASTLE Dunnottar Castle is located on the northeastern coast of Scotland and is surrounded on three sides by the waters of the North Sea. There is evidence that ancient Picts lived in the area long before a monastery was consecrated on the grounds in 1276 A.D. In 1392, Sir William Keith seized the holy site’s strategic location by building its first stone fortification, The Keep.

An even more unorthodox move came in 1593, when George Keith, the 5th Earl Marischal, built The Lion’s Den at Dunnottar Castle to house his pet lion. EILEAN DONAN CASTLE There is a reason Eilean Donan Castle is one of the most photographed castles in the world! Situated on a tiny island at the mouth of Loch Duich, this formidable fortress began as a monastery in 634 A.D. before being converted to a fortress in the 12th century to protect the area from Viking raids. Now administered by the Conchra Charitable Trust, this castle houses rare artifacts, such as a sword rumored to be from the famed battle of Culloden in 1745.
