HOLIDAY TRADITIONS EVOLVE …

But Family Remains the Heart of the Season

It’s hard to believe — the most wonderful time of the year has arrived. Many of us are able to slow down a bit and focus on time with family and friends as the holidays approach. No matter what you celebrate, one thing holds true for all of us — this is the season for family. As we try to come together as a nation in the aftermath of the election, it’s time to take a deep breath and look forward to what the next chapter looks like. We must remember it all starts with family. After all, that’s why many of us do what we do, and it’s time to celebrate and continue building those family bonds. I’m so grateful for all the years we’ve had with our daughter, Sophie, in the house — especially those Christmas mornings with her right there, sharing the excitement as the day begins. This year marks a new chapter for us, though. For the first time, we’ll wake up on Christmas Day, and it’ll just be Julia and me at home now that Sophie and Kyle have moved into their own place. The morning rhythm will shift, and there won’t be that eager question of “When will the kid get up?” That thought has me reflecting on Christmases past, and I’ll be honest,

empty nest syndrome is hitting home a little bit. Of course, we will still have her here in the afternoon to celebrate the day, but it will be just a bit different. But don’t get me wrong — Sophie prepared us a bit. The transition slowly started when she was in college and started watching some of our favorite Christmas movies like “Elf” and “Christmas Vacation” on her own instead of with the family.

are excited to support and celebrate it. As a guy who loves being the center of attention, I’ll have to let go of that! A tiny little one will take over that role one day.

This year, I’m grateful for my family and for a world that is slowly becoming a bit dematerialized (thanks, inflation). We are blessed to be together, open gifts, and celebrate the season.

Many people who have gone through similar transitions understand that small hole left when traditions shift.

But instead of dwelling on it, I recognize it’s important for us to appreciate the fact that as she settles into adulthood, we are still just right around the corner. I know many parents have miles between them and their kids, and I feel fortunate.

From my family to you and yours, Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas! Grab a glass of eggnog and enjoy yourself!

As life continues and we eventually move into grandparent status, it will no longer be about our Christmas, but rather theirs — and we

VICKY KIRKHAM MARKETING COORDINATOR STAFF SPOTLIGHT:

WHAT DOES YOUR TYPICAL WORKDAY LOOK LIKE? My typical workday consists of doing a variety of different tasks. I’m responsible for keeping our websites up to date, prepping printed marketing material, crafting emails, managing the multiple different contact systems we have, and managing our social media accounts. I also meet with Greg on a regular basis to go over marketing analytics, plans, and strategies. When I’m not creating content, I’m communicating with our vendors and partners. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB? My favorite part of my job is all the creative work I get to do like producing videos,

writing blogs and landing pages, and designing print material. I find the day always goes by quickly when I’m doing something like that. I love working in Adobe Creative Cloud and learning new techniques and new programs. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE WHO IS SEEKING HELP WITH ESTATE PLANNING OR LITIGATION? If you’re thinking about getting a will or trust drafted, I would highly encourage you to get the help of a professional. There are many legal nuances in do-it-yourself programs that you might not catch or fully understand, and this could have unintended consequences down the road. There also might be other estate planning tools out

there you aren’t aware of that could fit your needs and wants better.

If you believe you have a litigation case, such as an auto accident injury or a will contest, I encourage you to surf around our website a bit before calling an attorney. We have many resources that explain how the litigation process works and may even help you determine if you need to reach out to an attorney or not.

WE APPRECIATE YOU

Hiking is a favorite pastime here, and visitors this winter are in luck. One of the most beautiful walkways in the world, the half- mile Via dell’Amore (or Pathway of Love), reopened in August 2024 after repairs following a 2012 rockfall. Reservations are required, and visitors are only allowed to walk one way on the path from the village of Riomaggiore to Manarola. Unlike the steep, rugged hiking paths elsewhere in Cinque Terre, however, part of the Via dell’Amore is wheelchair accessible, and the breathtaking views are worth the effort. Planning to drive in and around Cinque Terre isn’t wise. The clifftop roads are narrow and frightening, even for seasoned drivers, and nonresidents aren’t allowed to park in the villages. A better strategy is to take the train from the Genoa or Pisa airports (about 1–2 hours). Check the national park website at Parconazionale5terre.it before you arrive to learn about any winter storm closures and trail conditions. WALK THE ITALIAN RIVIERA’S ‘PATHWAY OF LOVE’

attractions visitors love about Italy, from extraordinary food and wine to exciting seaside views. Childhood memories of Cinque Terre inspired Disney director Enrico Casarosa to re-create the setting for his Oscar-nominated coming-of-age film “Luca.” Cinque Terre’s narrow streets are often filled with day-trippers during the summer, nearly overwhelming the area’s 4,000 residents. The flood of tourists eases in the winter, however, making this the best season to savor Cinque Terre’s beauty and culture. While farmers developed the area in the 11th century, Cinque Terre was inaccessible by road until the 1960s. One has to admire the ingenuity of residents who carved terraces into the steep cliffs, stacked houses down the ravines, and cultivated olives and wines so superb that kings favored them during the Renaissance.

Cinque Terre, or “five lands,” encompasses five breathtakingly photogenic fishing villages along the northwest coast of Italy.
