Caring for our pets

Having a pet brings comfort and companionship, but it also comes with responsibilities. Whether you already have a pet or are thinking about getting one, it’s important to consider the costs involved, how pets affect neighbours, and what’s needed to keep animals safe and well cared for.

Keeping pets safe in hot weather Always provide shade and fresh water. Walk dogs in the early morning or evening. Never leave pets in cars or enclosed spaces. Watch for signs of heat stress, including heavy panting or drooling.

Planning for pet costs Pets have ongoing costs such as food, vet check-ups and flea and worm treatments. It’s also important to plan for unexpected medical emergencies. Residents are responsible for any property damage caused by pets, including scratched doors, torn flyscreens or stained carpets. Free financial advice is available through the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 .

Being mindful of neighbours

Check your legal requirements Dogs must be microchipped and registered and cats must be microchipped and desexed, unless exempt. All pets must have access to food, water, shelter and veterinary care. Check with your local council for any additional requirements.

Keep dogs on a lead outside your home and use local dog parks for off-leash play. Keep cats indoors at night to protect wildlife and neighbouring properties. Be mindful of ongoing noise, such as frequent barking.

If you need support If caring for your pet becomes difficult due to illness, age or unexpected circumstances, help is available. RSPCA Tasmania provides welfare advice, emergency vet assistance, desexing programs and surrender options. Contact them on 1300 139 947 or via rspcatas.org.au .
