Edition 3

Soweto Science Centre

The Soweto Science Centre (SSC), located on UJ’s Soweto Campus is the flagship learner enrichment programme of the Faculty of Science. SSC provides additional tutelage to high school learners and currently hosts 428 registered Grade 10 to 12 learners from 126 schools in Soweto, Eldorado Park and surrounding areas. Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences classes are presented on Saturdays from 08:00 until 15:00 and during school holidays. In addition to the enrichment and intervention programme for learners, the SSC also provides a Teacher Development Programme during school holidays to improve the quality of mathematics and science teaching in high schools in South Africa. The Teacher Development Programme this year took place from 18 to 21 June 2019. Partnerships and donors The SSC relies on vibrant partnerships with the South African Agency for Science and Technology (SAASTA), relevant

industries (Eskom, Mintek) and donors who contribute through the Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study (JIAS). The SSC hosted the Minquiz (funded by Mintek), which is South Africa’s Premier National Science Competition on 16 May 2019. Both the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists (20 July 2019) and the National Science Week (29 July to 3 August 2019) will also be hosted by the SSC in the Imbizo Hall on the Soweto Campus. The theme for the National Science Week is “Facing Harsh Realities of Climate Change”. As a single example of the many success stories of the SSC, we introduce Mr Vutivi Vukeya, an Actuarial Consultant and proud alumnus of the SSC, who enrolled for the Learner Enrichment Programme in 2014. According to Vutivi, “it was a step in the right direction as many youths really want to succeed but don’t have the right platform and guidance”. Mr Vukeya credits the SSC with contributing to the seven distinctions he obtained in his Grade 12 final examination.
