THE JBS MBA – AN MBA LIKE NO OTHER The purpose of the Johannesburg Business School (JBS) at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) is clear. We want to equip people to grow small and medium-sized businesses and by so doing create jobs and expand our economy. Knowledge is exciting. As a JBS student, you will experience an innovative teaching style geared to the complex environment of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), yet at the same time remaining authentically African. Our emphasis is on practical and useable knowledge that will have a direct benefit to the student’s business. The three areas of knowledge that you need to master to be successful in business are covered on the JBS MBA: • Self – Finding your purpose and managing yourself • Enterprise – Knowing what it takes to run a successful, sustainable business • Environment – Understanding the context of business in society WHAT WILL YOU LEARN ON THE JBS MBA? The topics covered include: • How to win in the market place • Using technology to accelerate your business • New business models for 4IR • Accounting for decision making and control • Cutting costs through effective operations and supply chain management • Getting to grips with the local economy and its effects on business • Identifying opportunities for international business • Your business’s contribution in society • The benefits of ethical business practice and shared value models • Getting your people on your side to grow your business Besides this core content, you will be able to tailor your MBA through your choice of electives, offered both at JBS and our international partner schools. Our approach to teaching is to promote critical thinking through an ethical lens in the pursuit of business success. Our emphasis is on developing each individual MBA student to unlock their potential. IS THE JBS MBA FOR YOU? If your interest is in starting, or growing and scaling a business, then the JBS MBA is for you. Our target market is new venturers, owners and senior managers of small and medium-sized businesses, including family owned businesses. The MBA will also be ideal for entrepreneurs who have started or are going to start a business they want to grow. In addition to these groups, people who consult to small and medium-sized businesses would also benefit greatly from the JBS MBA. To qualify for admission to the MBA, you will need to have the equivalent of a four-year qualification with an exit point at NQF Level 8 (e.g. Bachelor’s Degree plus a Postgraduate Diploma). You will also need to have four years’ appropriate work experience. Applicants who have an outstanding career record, but do not have the requisite academic qualifications, may gain entry through the recognition of prior learning (RPL) route.
