Zeta Chapter Advocates for Equality, Champions Justice in 2020 T his season was unlike any- thing the world has faced. In the United States, along

with Coronavirus, there was another disease that had claimed thousands of lives long before COVID-19 reached our shores, that disease is systemic racism. On May 25, 2020, the life of another African American man was taken at the hands of police. Unlike many situations before, there was video footage. This footage showed officer Derek Chauvin, of the Minneapolis Police Department, kneeling on an unarmed and handcuffed man, George Floyd, for a dura- tion of eight minutes and forty-six seconds. Breonna Taylor. Elijah McCain. Ahmaud Arbery. These are but a few of the lives lost in 2020 to the virus of systemic rac- ism. Despite having to deal with the deadly disease, hundreds of thousands of African Americans and allies around the country, and even around the world, poured into the streets of their prospective cities to protest these tragedies. Upon witnessing yet another monstrosity in the wrongful killing of a black life, members of Zeta Chapter felt it was our duty to join in these protests wherever and however we could. Members participated in Black Lives Matter protests in their hometowns of Dayton, OH, Columbus, OH, Cleveland, OH, Detroit, OH and Houston, TX. Members also participated in protests on the campus at The Ohio State Uni- versity. Members, individually and collectively, felt the need to join the fight against systemic racism and to pursue racial justice.
