Rho Omicron Serves the Community During the Semester
By Desmond Varner
A mongst a challenging semester of dealing with COVID-19 regulations, The Xavier Univer- sity Chapter, the Rho Omicron Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi hosted their first annual “Stuff the Bus” event. The event drew participation from the Cincinnati community, Xavier students, faculty, and departments wanting to give back. The project was deemed the largest service project in Xavier University’s (OH) National Pan-Hellenic Council history. Rho Omicron collected over $3,500 worth of donations in just seven hours. They collected and handed out over 60 coats, 60 sets of hat and gloves, 40 pillows, 20 bed sheet sets, 75 boxes of diapers, 100 toys, and countless hygiene products. The event was made possible by Karlyn Wade-Richardson and Cincinnati Met- ro for allowing them to utilize a metro bus for the collection of donations and as promotion for the event, and also the Cincinnati Recreation Commission for allowing them to use Winton Terrace Recreation Center as the sight for the distribution of donations. “My biggest takeaway from the service project was being able to see the look on parents’ faces when they picked up a coat or a book for their child. In the midsts of a pandemic, the smallest acts can go a long way and make a giant impact on someone in need,”stated Chapter Polemarch David Fluker (Kappa Delta 2018). Desmond C. Varner (Kappa Delta 2018) agreed. “This event served as an eye-opener to how big the effect of the pandemic truly was. A lot of the parents had lost their jobs and source of income. To be able to make their lives a little easier and serve an underserved community, was spiritually fulfilling.”
