Nu Zeta Chapter “Open Letter of Appreciation and Gratitude” to Brothers Jackie Harper and Larry D. Meredith, Esq. “Leaders of Men”
I n the midst of a global pandemic, racial reckoning, and a politically divided country, the Brothers of The Nu Zeta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi ® Fraternity, Incorporated would at this time and place offer our most sincere gratitude, love, and esteem for two outstanding Brothers of our Noble Clan that have left an indelible impression upon the history and culture of our beloved chapter - Brothers Larry D. Meredith, Esq., and Jackie Harper. BROTHER LARRY D. MEREDITH, Esq. - Brother Larry D. Meredith, Esq., now with 51 years in the Bond as a member of Kappa Alpha Psi ® , who, during his junior year in college at Howard University was initiated into The Xi Chapter on April 19, 1969 as a member of the “Mean 17”. Being a “Man of Achievement”, after his graduation in 1970, he furthered his education and graduated from Howard University’s School of Law in 1973. Being a “Man of Patriotism”, Brother Meredith also served in the Army Reserves where he retired with the rank of captain. Always being a diligent worker for Kappa, Brother Meredith, and a dedicated group of 9 other like-minded Nupes, embarked upon the arduous ten- year journey to charter The Erie (PA) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi ® . Through his dedication to the cause and proven leadership during the chartering process, the Brothers of the Erie Alumni Chapter elected Brother Meredith as its first Polemarch. Under his direction, for five consecutive terms, the chapter instituted their Annual Red and White Ball which raised scholarship funds for local students. He also played a critical role in chartering of The Nu Zeta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi ® on the campus of Edinboro University with its designation as a city-wide chapter that allowed qualified young men from the neighboring Allegheny, Gannon, Penn State Behrend and Thiel Universities and Colleges to seek admission into “The Greatest Fraternity Known to GOD and Man”. The Erie Alumni Chapter, being prominent in the communities that they serviced, was instrumental in bringing the first African American Congresswoman, Ms. Shirley Chisholm to the City of Erie for a speaking engagement at Gannon University in 1986, where she was escorted into the building to speak by the Scrollers of the “Everlasting” line. During his time as the Director of Inter-Cultural Relations at Edinboro University from 1985 – 1992, Brother Meredith served the African American student body well in his advisory roles with The Nu Zeta Chapter and Minority Students United organizations on Edinboro’s campus. He was also instrumental in getting students elected to student representative positions on Edinboro University’s Board of Governors. He was so beloved by the student body at Edinboro, that the students honored him with the “Father Away From Home Award” for his always attentive, caring, and supportive assistance given in a “fatherly advice” type of format. In civic affairs, Brother Meredith in his capacity as a lawyer, became the first African American to be elected to the Erie City Council. He also served as President of the Erie Airport Authority and in his other fraternal organization, the Improved Benevolent Protective Order of Elks of the World, he served as Grand Legal Advisor to the charitable organization. Throughout his illustrious professional and Kappa career, Brother Meredith received accolades and awards from the following organizations: NAACP (Foot Soldiers in the SandAward), Greater Erie Community Action Committee (Community Service Award), JFK Community Center (Community Service Award), and the Governor’s Black Achievement Award. With such a rich and satisfying career, Brother Meredith lists his GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT as being a “family man” that enjoys spending time with his children and grandchildren. BROTHER JACKIE HARPER - Brother Jackie Harper, approaching 50 years in the Bond of our Noble Clan of Kappa Alpha Psi ® Fraternity, Incorporated, was initiated into The Gamma Pi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi ® on the campus of Alcorn A&M – now known as Alcorn State as a sophomore in December of 1971 as a member of the “Bodacious 10”. Upon his graduation in 1973, Brother Harper came to live in the Erie, PA area where he joined the Erie (PA) Alumni Chapter where he served in the position of Strategus for many years. In 1973 Brother Harper was employed by Stairways Mental Health Facility as a counselor and also served as a part time teacher at Strong Vincent High School. In 1987 he transitioned to full time teacher and during his tenure at Strong Vincent he would serve the student body as coach of the track team. His love for high school sports is undisputed as he also coached football, basketball, and track at Technical Memorial High School. During his tenure, he was named “Teacher of the Year” in 1997 and 2007. Brother Harper retired in 2010. In his free time, he is an active and energetic family man that enjoys spending time with his large family and is also a member of a local golf league named “BLT: Brothers Linked Together”. In addition, Brother Harper over many years has graciously hosted at his home, many younger brothers who returned to attend homecoming. These fellowship moments have always been cherished by the younger brothers who look forward to connecting with Jackie and the other local brothers. - Brothers Daryl Page, ’ 86 / Greg Thomas, ’ 88
