Leading the Ora Lee Smith Cancer Research Foundation Beyond Hope Campaign Fundraiser

$10 million is needed to conduct the trials independent of the pharmaceutical companies to ensure it remains accessible and affordable. Dr. Green has elected to raise the funds through the Foundation.

T he Eastern Province, in partner- ship with the Ora Lee Smith Cancer Research Foundation (Foundation), held its first "Beyond Hope" Campaign Event in recognition of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. The event's purpose was to heighten awareness to prostate cancer and raise money for the Foundation. The virtual event was held live on Zoom and Facebook on Saturday, September 26, 2020, from 4-6 p.m. Over 30 broth- ers and several family and friends signed in for the event along with numerous viewers via Facebook. The Beyond Hope Campaign Cancer Awareness panelists included cancer survivors who are members of Kappa Alpha Psi and healthcare professional Brother Dr. Jackson Davis and Silhouette Dr. Me- lissa Clarke, a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Following the panel discussions and Q&A sessions, viewers were able to

share their experiences as cancer survi- vors or as caregivers for family members impacted by the effects of the diseases. Brothers and guests were encouraged to donate during the two-hour event. More than $5,000 was pledged with $10,000 being the goal. After the Beyond Hope Campaign event, Dr. Hadiyah-Nicole Green, founder of the Ora Lee Smith Cancer Research Foundation shared videos showing why she has dedicated her life to changing the cancer is treated. As a result, Dr. Green was recently hon- ored by USA Today as one of the 100 Women of the Century for her success in eradicating human cancerous tumors in mice. Her research has been proven and is ready to begin human trials and undergo FDA approval. $10 million is needed to conduct the trials independent of the pharmaceuti- cal companies to ensure it remains

accessible and affordable. Dr. Green has elected to raise funds through the Foundation. Dr. Green also expressed her gratitude for the leadership of Charles Exum, Province Polemarch for his pledge to raise $150,000 for the Foundation. The Province Polemarch intends to challenge other provinces to support this worthy cause.
