The Art of Unplugging — Even a Little UNWIND, RECHARGE

On March 3, we celebrate the National Day of Unplugging, a day set aside to disconnect from technology and take time to breathe and enjoy life without the distractions of social media and electronics. Sure, technology is extremely helpful and serves a great purpose, but it can become daunting, and we all at times, admittedly, get a little caught up in it. Do you remember the old days when you would call a boyfriend or a girlfriend on the phone and you would have to wait around patiently for them to call you back? Or how about when you’d give out your house phone number and you would wait for the call to come in days later? Today, if you don’t get a call or text back in 10 minutes, you’re upset — that’s what we’ve come to. That’s why, to me, the National

software open to ensure that I am aware of my speed and surroundings and to be sure I know where I’m going. It’s also a great way to be alerted of accidents or roadwork ahead. Years ago, I used the old ADC map books in my car. Surely, you remember those or the old foldable maps. I was able to read those in a heartbeat and know exactly where to go! Today, I rely on GPS.

Even worse, technology can purportedly cause health

issues and complications. Researchers have found

Day of Unplugging makes sense. We’ve become so connected with and reliant upon technology that it’s become extremely easy to miss being present and in the moment.

The problem? Interactions with others just aren’t what they used to be! I recently witnessed two college kids sitting at a table texting each other … and they were a few feet away from each other! Why couldn’t they just talk to each other? With technology available at our fingertips, we rely heavily (sometimes a bit too much) on it. For example, when I drive around, I typically have my map

problems with their eyesight and sleeping because they utilize technology late at night before they go to bed. To illustrate this point, a few years ago, we visited the Shenandoah Mountains in Virginia. After our arrival, my wife announced to the kids that it was going to be a “technology-free” 24 hours. This meant no cellphones, iPads, or computers. My children

sure what to do or how to act. Well, it turned out that we had a fabulous time! We hiked, biked, and played chess late into the night. We even told jokes and played other games. Here’s the funny thing: Much later on, after we announced to the kids that we would like them to put down the technology for the day, we realized that we were so far away from connectivity that our phones wouldn’t have worked anyway. It was still pretty funny to see how the children reacted! When they got their phones back, you’d think that they had found their long-lost teddy bear. It was certainly an indication that we rely on our electronics too much. So, think about how you would fare without your phone, computer, or iPad for a day or two. How would it affect you? Would you be okay without them? Or, do you think that you would start to get sweaty palms and become anxious without them? Then, take it a step further and think about the other habits you have that may be taking over your life. ... continued from Cover

bad news? Are you eating a little too much ice cream late at night? Whatever it is that you find yourself doing too much of, I encourage you to use this article in your favor — make a change and spice things up. Instead of eating breakfast, maybe you’d like to try out intermittent fasting and wait until lunch for your first meal of the day. Instead of diving into the news, go for a walk around the block. If you want to watch television late at night, get out a board game and play with your family, friends, or spouse instead! Most importantly, put that phone away and enjoy the company of everyone around you. So, as you think through the month of March, I’m not saying to stop using your phone for a month. For many people, myself included, that just wouldn’t be possible. Instead, try to use it a little less and see if you are able to find a quality of life that’s a bit better than relying on the tiny little box with a screen. There is so much to live for, and while technology is certainly a benefit in our lives, it shouldn’t control our lives. Take some time to unplug here and there — you won’t be disappointed!

= THE SECURE 2.0 ACT IS NOW LAW Here’s What It Means for You

Last year, the SECURE 2.0 Act, which builds upon the SECURE Act of 2019, was signed into law through the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 with many new retirement-related provisions to help strengthen the nation’s retirement system. The original law changed the rules a bit on how retirees are able to save and withdraw funds in their retirement accounts. The SECURE 2.0 Act creates even more flexibility for you in ensuring you are set up for a safe and financially sound retirement. Here’s what the SECURE 2.0 Act means for you. Required Minimum Distribution Age Individuals turning age 72 during 2023 or later will now begin their required minimum distributions at age 73. For those reaching age 74 after Dec. 31, 2023, their start date is age 75.

Catch-Up Provisions You can now contribute $6,500 to an IRA or a Roth IRA for 2023 — though there are certain income limitations for the Roth. You can then add another $1,000 as the catch-up if you are over the age of 50. 401(k) With respect to 401(k)s, you can now contribute up to $22,500 and add an additional catch-up contribution of $7,500 if you are over the age of 50. Required Minimum Distribution Penalty The penalty for not taking your required minimum distributions used to be 50% but has been lowered to 25% in 2023. If you have any questions about these provisions and how they affect you, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We’d love to help you!

The Sweet Scents of Spring 3 Potpourri Mixtures You Need to Try

Many have heard about using a stovetop potpourri to simmer oranges, apples, and cinnamon to make your home smell like Christmas. But you can also fill your home with fresh scents that remind you of spring. The best part is that you probably have most of the ingredients you need at home or in your garden! But first, what is potpourri? Potpourri combines fruits, spices, herbs, and other edible ingredients to make rich scents that spread throughout your home. It’s one of the most natural and cheapest ways to freshen the air you breathe. Here are three stovetop potpourris to make your home smell like springtime. Lemon, Rosemary, and Vanilla Making this sweet-smelling scent is easy! Just add 2 sliced lemons, a handful of fresh rosemary, and 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract

to a large pot filled with water. Bring the mixture to a simmer and enjoy the fresh and clean scent! Lime, Mint, Ginger, and Thyme Add 3 sliced limes, a handful of fresh mint and thyme, and finely sliced ginger to a pot for this mixture. When the ingredients come to a simmer, you’ll immediately smell a citrus-mint aroma that will spread throughout your home. Lemon, Cinnamon, Mint, and Thyme This mixture is perfect if you want to add a hint of spice and warmth to your fresh spring scent. Combine 2 sliced lemons, a handful of fresh mint and thyme, and 2 cinnamon sticks in a pot before bringing the water to a simmer. One of the best things about potpourri is that the mixture will last a couple of days. Once you turn off your stove and drain the

water, you can keep the ingredients in the pot and reuse them. All you have to do is add more water and bring it to a simmer again. Alternatively, you can prep your ingredients in advance, store them in an airtight container like a mason jar, and refrigerate them until you’re ready to use them.

So, fill your home with sweet fragrances to usher in a joyous spring!

Feeling the Luck of the Irish? Check Out America’s Best St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations

As we inch closer to the beginning of spring, nature around us is coming back to life. Soon, the grass and trees will return to their typical green hue if they haven’t already. Luckily, you don’t need to wait until April to see an abundance of green again. On March 17, we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, and people across the country will dress in green to honor the occasion. Certain cities in the U.S. go big for St. Patrick’s Day. If you’ve never attended a St. Patrick’s Day parade or celebration, maybe this is the year. Here are three cities with St. Patrick’s Day celebrations worth checking out. Chicago, IL Nobody does St. Patrick’s Day quite like Chicago, Illinois. The entire city gets a makeover! This year, on March 11, Chicago will host its St. Patrick’s Day parade, which includes dyeing the Chicago River a beautiful shade of emerald green. They’ll start tinting the river around 9 a.m., and the color will fade within six hours, so make sure you get there early! Chicago’s St.

Patrick’s Day Parade is also one of the biggest in the country. You’ll see floats, Irish step dancers, and much more. New Orleans, LA Once Mardi Gras concludes, all eyes are on St. Patrick’s Day in New Orleans, Louisiana. The city hosts a parade on March 11, and it’s always quite a spectacle. You’ll see the makings of Irish traditions everywhere, including cabbage, onions, and potatoes, so keep your head on a swivel. You can also head to the Irish Channel neighborhood on March 11 to attend an all-day block party. Plenty of green beer will be available at this event, so come ready to celebrate! New London, WI Let’s say you want to do something slightly toned down but still exciting for St. Patrick’s Day. Then, you’ll want to check out New London, Wisconsin, for one of the country’s most unique St. Paddy’s Day celebrations. Leprechauns will change the city signs from New London to New Dublin. The city also puts on an Irish funeral parody in its annual downtown parade.
