In every pang that rends the heart, The Man of Sorrows had a part; He sympathizes with our grief, And to the sufferer sends relief. — S elected . JUNE 11 Invited to the K ing’s Audience Chamber “Let us therefore come boldly" (Heb. 4:16). God loves to see in His children bold ness in claiming the promises. “The throne of grace”—the phrase is very encouraging. It indicates power; it indicates a never- failing supply. . . . There is no privi lege to man like it. It is the privilege of the peers and the privy counsellors of the kingdom to seek and obtain access to the Sovereign at all times. . . . The King is ever on the throne; and the audience cham ber, redolent of the merit, the grace, and the love of Christ, is always free. — H enry B owker . JUNE 12 Bound by the T okens of God’s Covenant “And he put all upon Aaron’s hands” (Lev. 8:27). Three sets of things were put on Aaron’s hands; all the fat around thte inner parts of the offering, specimens of food from the basket of provisions, and the right shoulder of the sacrifice. Briefly, we may say that the first of these represents the riches of the heart’s affections; the second, the pos sessions and property, the basket and store of the offerer; and the third, his bodily powers and strength. Placed upon Aaron’s hands and waved before God, they served to express his action as though in these words: “Lord, here are all the powers of my body, all the wealth of my affections, all the possessions of my life. I give them over to Thee.” There remained yet one action by which the whole work was sealed. “And Moses took of the anointing oil, and of the blood which was upon the altar, and sprinkled it upon Aaron and upon his gar ments . . . and sanctified Aaron and his garments.” The blood of the sacrifice and the oil of anointing were thus made to touch everywhere the man and his gar ments. He and his surroundings were thus assigned and bound by the tokens of God’s covenant to the service of the High Priest hood.— H ubert B rooke . JUNE 13 W ithin the Sunny Circle of God’s Love “Keep yourselves in the love of God” (Jude 21). God’s love is the sweet home of our hearts, and a fortress “whereunto we may continually resort,” and our wisdom and Security is to keep at home within the strong walls that defend us, compassed by the warmth and protection of the love which God has toward us. Then my text implies that Christian men may get outside of the love of God. . . . It is possible for Christian people to lose the conscious ness of being surrounded and kept within that warm and sunny circle where God’s love falls. And this exhortation puts, as the very center of the devout life, consid ered in regard to the man himself, and his relations to God, this: Keep yourselves in the charmed circle, and be sure that you walk in the light of His face, and in the felt love of His heart. — A lexander M aclaren .
