OGC Level 2 Training Handbook-EN v1

13.1.2 Application of CTSh

The CTSh (Correction for Temperature of the Shell) is applied to volumes obtained from capacity tables that are at the Tank Shell Reference Temperature (TShREF). The CTSh (Correction for Temperature of the Shell) is applied to the Total Observed Volume (TOV) after deducting Free Water (FW), and before the Floating Roof Adjustment (FRA) (or Floating Roof Correction (FRC)) where applicable, to calculate the Gross Observed Volume (GOV), as illustrated in the below calculation sequence:

GOV = [(TOV – FW) x CTSh] ± FRA

The CTSh (Correction for Temperature of the Shell) should NOT be applied at any other stage of the calculation sequence. Furthermore, as per “API MPMS Ch 12.1.1 / EI Hydrocarbon Management HM1 Part 1” “The use of the tank shell temperature correction (CTSh) is not appropriate for marine vessels (as

there is no way to determine the tank shell temperature (TSh) and shall not be used)”.

TIC Council has published a bulletin on this topic “Thermal Expansion Factor (TEF or CTSh) on Bitumen and Asphalt vessels - Bulletin 20- 01” which is available via the TIC Council website - Petroleum Committee Bulletins page and can be presented to clients in scenarios where a request/instruction is received to apply CTSh (Correction for Temperature of the Shell) to marine vessel tank.
