It’s Read Across America Month 5 Benefits of Reading
Solution on Pg. 4
As Ernest Hemingway once said, “There is no friend as loyal as a book.” On March 2, we celebrate Read Across America Day to encourage everyone to read more books. Getting lost in a book is magical and has numerous benefits, too! Let’s take a look! It’s entertaining. Sure, plopping on the couch and watching your favorite movie or television show is enjoyable, but did you know that many of the greatest movies and television series out there are based on stories found in novels? Reading on the couch, in the park, by a fire, in a coffee shop, or even on your lunch break is a great way to entertain yourself. It makes you more knowledgeable. Reading is a great way to continue learning. In fiction and nonfiction books, there are so many nuggets of information waiting to be uncovered. You’ll be surprised what new things you learn. It’s a stress reliever. According to studies, reading reduces stress levels by roughly 68%. Reading is the perfect way to mentally escape and take a break after a long day or as a way to blow off some steam. It transports you to another world. It improves your focus. Reading requires concentration to follow the storyline, keep all the characters straight, and to keep an eye out for foreshadowing and plot indicators. Reading requires your full attention and is a great way to expand your attention span. It boosts your vocabulary. While reading, you may stumble upon words that you didn’t know. So, what do you do? You either use context clues or a dictionary to find the meaning! Reading expands our vocabulary.
