SECONDARY CAMPUS
SPECIAL POINTS OF INTEREST IN THIS ISSUE:
Recently, our Secondary Campus was a hub of academic activity. The General Achievement Test (GAT), mandatory for all students undertaking a Year 12 course of study, along with VCE and Year 10 exams across all subjects, were conducted in our examination center following VCAA processes during Weeks 9 and 10 of Term 2. Following these exams, VCE Semester 2 (Units 2 and 4) commenced in the middle of Week 10. As we approach the end of the Semester, teachers are diligently completing final assessments, gathering, and interpreting a range of data to evaluate student learning. It is crucial that the end - of - Semester reports are reviewed alongside the Learning Tasks (CATs/SACs) published throughout the Semester. These tasks provide significant feedback to guide student improvement and goal setting for the remainder of the academic year. A reminder that Years 7 - 9 reports will be published by Friday, 28th June, and Years 10 - 12 reports will be available by the end of Week 1 of Term 3, to allow for marking and moderation of exams and final SACs from Units 1 and 3. We have recently concluded our first cycle of domain - based Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), culminating in PLC presentations and celebrations this week. The analysis of PLC data, the implementation of identified strategies, and the rich discussions that have emerged from this process will undoubtedly enhance student outcomes.

Our school nurse will be conducting a Safe Partying Education session for Year 11 and 12 students on Monday of Week 11, during Session 1. The information presented will also be sent home to parents/carers to ensure they are informed. We are also proud to announce that one of our Year 12 students, Charlotte A, has advanced to the state finals in Cross Country. She will be representing our College early next term. Congratulations Charlotte!
Students from Years 4 - 12 have recently completed the Attitudes to School Survey, with results expected to be available in Term 3. This survey provides valuable feedback that helps us understand and improve the student experience.
Additionally, we held two whole - school out - of - uniform days, successfully raising funds for important causes:
School outdoor furniture: $434 raised
Cancer Council: $450 raised
PRIMARY CAMPUS
These initiatives not only support our school environment and community causes but also foster a sense of responsibility and community spirit among our students. In conclusion, this Term has been a period of significant academic and extracurricular activity across our College. The dedication and hard work of our students, teachers, and ES staff are evident in the many achievements and events we've celebrated. As we look forward to the next Term, I encourage all students to review their feedback, set new goals, and continue striving for excellence.
Our Year 5 students enjoyed a fantastic 4 - day experience on the Secondary Campus, getting a taste of secondary life. They participated in subjects such as Food Studies, Product Design & Technology, and Dance/Drama, which provided them with a valuable insight into what lies ahead. The Year 6 students have been engaged in a Social Enterprise project throughout Term 2, promoting a Zoos Victoria campaign. Each Year 6 team planned and budgeted with $10 each to create a product or service for the younger students to purchase. Last week the Prep - Year 5 students enthusiastically spent their Dojo points at this 'Market - day' event, joined by some very excited teachers as well.
Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to our College community.
Sincerely,

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter STUDENT PERSPECTIVE
PRIMARY REFLECTION GRACE, TRI THANH, VISHAL & SAANVI YEAR 6 CAPTAINS
This Term the yard has improved with the amount of rubbish, the Sports Club has been awesome. I ’ m very excited for next year as I am in VIA, I can ’ t wait to challenge myself as a secondary student at The Lakes and I ’ m also excited to be on a new campus with amazing facilities. Our teachers have been working hard to help keep students safe in the yard, to make learning fun and helping kids understand what they are learning. They have been adding colour and detail to their mini lessons and making fun activities. We appreciate and love our teachers at The Lakes. Grace T This Term, people have really been enjoying 5/6 Sport. We have been playing handball, netball and AFL. The A netball team came runners up, the B netball team came 5th, the girls handball came 4th, the boys handball finished 6th and the AFL team ended up in 4th. In the second last game of the season, we were lucky enough to try out our new jerseys which we looked stunning in. I ’ m also very excited for next year, as I was given a scholarship to be part of our VIA program. I ’ m very proud to be selected to get a scholarship. I can ’ t wait to see what lies in store for me. Tri Thanh L Our basketball court is currently being built and we are all very excited about it and it is all most halfway done. The Year 6 students are starting to get excited about graduation which will be hosted at a new venue. The yard has been really clean so keep it up and keep putting your rubbish in the bin. I am really enjoying of being a School Captain, it has been challenging and very rewarding, I look forward to continuing to work in this role and improve our school. Vishal S Being a School Captain has been great. I have really got to explore and venture out to different opportunities. I loved running tours for parents/carers, being in the handball team, presenting at assembly and attending a leadership forum in the city. A few weeks ago, the whole school enjoyed performing at the Rhythm Revival and everyone did a great job. The Year 6’ s did Market Day hosting games for the younger year levels with toys and prizes. Winter Woolies and Cancer council fundraisers were a huge success, we raised funds for very important causes. Saanvi C
SECONDARY REFLECTION NASH, CHARLOTTE & IZAK YEAR 12 CAPTAINS
This Term all students have been super busy with exams, Rhythm Revival, school sports and so much more.
A couple of weeks ago we had our ‘ Rhythm Revival ’ showcase which was enjoyable for all involved. All of the performers did an excellent job and it was well received by the audience.
We ’ ve had lots of students going out to represent the school for sport both individually and in teams. We ’ re super impressed with everyone ’ s efforts and can ’ t wait to see how far they go next Term - we just had tryouts for the basketball teams! All of our senior students undertook their Semester 1 exams over the past couple of weeks. Well done to all students - especially to our fellow Year 12s who sat the GAT. It was great preparation for our end of year exams, for which dates have just been announced. Lots of students have also been preparing for the dance competition ‘ Wakakirri ’. All year we ’ ve been creating, learning and practicing a seven minute long dance titled ‘ The Fabric of You ’. We will be performing this dance in August and are super excited to see all of our hard work pay off! Now that we ’ re at the end of Term, students in younger year levels have chosen their Semester 2 electives and are excited to learn new things. For us Year 12s, we are both feeling sad and excited to say that we only have one full Term of school left! We hope everyone has a safe and fun holidays, see you next Term!
The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter AGENCY & ENGAGEMENT
What a busy term it has been on the Secondary Campus. Below is just a snapshot of all the amazing work that has been happening.
We ’ d like to thank all our students in Years 7 to 12 who have completed this year ’ s Student Attitudes to School Survey. We achieved a 93% response rate which is outstanding. We look forward to analysing and sharing our results. We also look forward to acting on the feedback of our students, their voices are helping to drive our College ’ s direction.
The Student Agency & Engagement Team have a few key reminders that we ’ d like to share to help us all have a successful start to Term 3: The importance of regular attendance: Recent academic studies have indicated that attendance is an important contributor to a student ’ s academic achievement – all school days matter. “ The correlation between absence and achievement has been shown to be consistently negative and declines in achievement are evident with any level of absence ”. (Hancock et al., 2013) The importance of punctuality: Prompt arrival to school and to scheduled classes is one of the important things students can do to set up for a successful day of learning. Often, some of the most important information is given in opening minutes of a session. Being late for 2 or 3 minutes of each session adds up very quickly over the course of a Term. The importance of getting involved: There will be a number of opportunities for students to get involved in school activities next Term. This might be trying out for or coaching a sports team, signing up for activity club, completing student surveys or coming to student agency events. The more students we have getting involved in our school community, the more connected we all feel to school. So look out for lots of exciting opportunities in Term 3 & 4!
We have had a number of students attend conferences and events this Term including:
A group of our Year 12 Girls attended an International Women ’ s Day Luncheon with the Hon. Lily D ’ Ambrosio. Premier Jacinta Allan even spent some time with our students. Our Year 9 Student Leadership Team attended the Lead Altitude Day Conference with other Year 9 leaders from around the state. What a great chance to network with other likeminded young people.

Thank you to the Year 7, 8 & 10 students who assisted with Year 5 Transition Week. It was great for our Primary students to have such positive role models. Lots of students have been working on a passion project during their Learning Coach sessions, many have been sharing their successes with their classmates this week. We ’ d also like to congratulate our Year 7 Cohort for completing their first full Semester of Secondary School, they have adjusted well to the demands of senior schooling and we are looking forward to their personal and academic growth in the second half of the year.
Have a safe and relaxing holidays, we ’ ll see you all back ready and recharged for a busy Term 3.

SRC NEWS
TERM 2 FUNDRAISING ACHIEVEMENTS!
This Term has been a very busy one for our Primary SRC students. It's been an exciting Term! Winter Woolies was a huge success, raising over $450. It was fantastic to see everyone dressed up in their themed pjs, oodies and warm clothes! We even had our teachers dress up also, which was awesome. The money raised from our 2023 Colour Run has been put to great use. We've purchased new sports uniform tops for our Primary students, which the Year 5/6 students are thrilled about wearing during sports activities and showing them off at 5/6 sport. Additionally, we used some of the funds to buy mini whiteboards for each classroom. The students really enjoyed using them, which has been wonderful to see. We've been eagerly watching the progress of our new basketball court being built and can't wait for it to be finished. Hopefully it ’ ll be ready for a warm, sunny Term 4. The SRC students have also been busy planning. They're exploring the possibility of getting a gaga pit for our Primary campus, funded by the proceeds from Winter Woolies in Term 2 and Crazy Sock Day in Term 1. Looking ahead, our Primary and Secondary SRC students are working together to organise a Term 4 Colour Run for 2024. Keep an eye out for more details on this exciting event. We can ’ t wait to slime Mr Panas, Ms Lee and Mr Abney - Hastings again! We're also planning an Out of Uniform Footy Colours Day in Term 3. Stay tuned for the date and get your footy/sports colours ready! Last Thursday we had our Market Day on Primary. Our Year 6 students have been working hard all Term with Ms Wilson in Digital Technology to create products to sell at their very own Market Day. We had students sell fidget toys, popcorn, lollies, sherbet, show bags, pencils, lemonade, temporary tattoos, slime, pet rocks and lots more! Each class from Prep to Year 5 had a chance to go to the market and spend their dojo points on the products of their choice. Most stalls had sold out by lunchtime! All the students had such a fun time. Thanks, Ms Wilson, for organising the day, we all loved it! Last Thursday we also had our Cancer Council Fundraiser. Students were asked to come dressed in yellow to raise awareness and funds for the Cancer Council. Recently, we ’ ve had students, parents/carers and families directly affected by cancer, so we wanted to raise awareness and show our support to those families by raising money. We are happy to report that we raised over $430 for the Cancer Council Foundation. Thank you to everyone that donated and showed their support. We love bringing our Lakes community together.
It's been a productive Term, and we're looking forward to more exciting projects and events ahead.

FIELD - BASED INQUIRY AOTEAROA – NEW ZEALAND
“ Mā tō rourou, mā tōku rourou, ka ora ai te iwi ” Together as learners, we are inspired to grow.
Kia Ora!
Last Week, Mr Panas and Ms Lee travelled the North Island of Aotearoa, New Zealand, as a contingent of 13 Principals from across Victoria to learn about education in Aotearoa, New Zealand, with a particular focus on First Nations learners and education.
During our trip we visited:
• Waikato University, where we met with the director of the Ministry of Education. We were briefed on the broad characteristics of the New Zealand education system, including: commitments of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and embedment of Te Ao Maori; and, the expected introduction of a knowledge - rich curriculum, informed by the science of learning, with a structured approach to reading, writing, and mathematics instruction. • Raglan Area School, encompassing students from Years 1 to 13 (students from five to 18 years old). The cultural significance of the school in relation to the land, story, and language was prominent in every conversation and action. The school was clear and united in its vision and mission to respect and acknowledge the Māori language, customs and protocols, embrace identity, and uphold an enduring commitment to the Te Tiriti o Waitangi. • Te Ao Marama, a primary school in Hamilton, a newly established suburb, not dissimilar to The Lakes 10 - 15 years ago. Te Tiriti o Waitangi is woven through the school's short history, with an authentic drive and obligation to regenerate and preserve the Māori culture, with all students at Te Ao Marama learning Te Reo Māori.
• Mount Maunganui College, overlooking the Bay of Plenty, a school that “ is everything to everyone. ” The College sets two clear and equal goals - Ako (academic) and Hauora (well - being). The College highlighted its obligation to improve and acquire fit - for - purpose facilities to improve and enhance student learning. • Raukura Boys High School, a place for young Māori men to find identity, connect to language, community, and story, and to reach educational equity. The prestigious school leverages personal and community relationships to bring Māori culture to life. Its sporting and pathways programs are world renowned. At each of the schools we were greeted with a powerful pōwhiri, a Māori welcoming ceremony, where students exemplified the culture with authenticity and pride. Students facilitated the ceremony involving whaikōrero (formal speech), waiata (singing), and kai (food). The main learnings from our trip have been the obligation of schools to regenerate and preserve First Nations culture, leaving us to consider what we see, hear, experience, and feel in our own schools that make explicit our origins, our connections to country and stories of the land and its first peoples, and our connectedness as a collective within our College – looking at the importance of storytelling and the rich tapestry of connection that binds us as a united College community.
We now look forward to bringing our learnings back to The Lakes community and adopting many exemplary practices that we have learnt whilst on our travels.
