SEAMUS HEANEY CENTRE, QUEEN’S UNIVERSITY BELFAST

GRANITE PAVING, PRECISELY LAID BY SAVAGE GROUNDWORKS, ADDED A FINISHING TOUCH TO THE EXTERIOR OF THE NEW SEAMUS HEANEY CENTRE… GROUNDWORKS

Adhering to a tight schedule, coping with inclement weather and maintaining a safe working site beside a public thoroughfare were among some of challenges faced by Savage Groundworks during the project. The Ballynahinch-based business was sub-contracted by GEDA to complete all groundworks which included digging out an internal lift shaft, along with installing internal and external drainage, and finishing off with laying granite paving around the Centre. Exterior works included breaking out and removing the existing pavement, reducing the ground level, installing drainage and pouring a concrete subbase. Granite paving, hand cut to the architect’s precise specification, was then laid on screed and finished with grouting. Shane Savage, owner and Director of

Savage Groundworks, said, “I have worked with GEDA on a number of projects now, and can honestly say they have given me some amazing jobs to complete. “I have met some incredible people who show my team great respect, and we work well together on any job. As a main contractor, I greatly appreciated that they take my advice and opinions into consideration, as it shows the trust they put in me.” Savage Groundworks was established in 2021 by Shane, who has over 10 years’ experience in the trade, initially focused on residential projects such as transforming gardens with porcelain tiles and flags, laying artificial grass, and constructing new retaining walls. Fast forward three years, with the business rapidly taking off, Shane

added to his team and fleet to facilitate an expansion of operations into site clearance, foundations, mainline drainage across all residential and commercial projects and even football pitches for a local contractor. A proactive approach to marketing, communicating Savage Groundworks’ services and experience to building firms in the region, paid off and the business

began to pick up bigger jobs. “I now have an experienced and

committed team, a large holding of plant and machinery, and my confidence in our capabilities has grown significantly,” said Shane.
