CONTACT US
Even with the availability of hundreds of standard precision tools and gages, sometimes measuring challenges are best solved with a specially made gage. It is critical to work hand-in-hand with engineers who are dedicated to making sure that an accurate and easy-to-use custom-made solution can be attained for specific application requirements. Since being established in 1958, The Starrett Special Gage Division has served the US Government, NASA, and virtually all industries in the metal working field. This includes aerospace, automotive, ordinance, as well as other fields such as, high technology plastics, food packaging, and medical components. Designed by engineers to minimize variables that influence the measurement, our gages are intended to save the customer manufacturing costs by increasing gaging accuracy and improving productivity. These custom gages, made by highly skilled gage makers, are lightweight, user friendly and produce accurate, repeatable results. At Starrett, we make and use electronic indicators, AGD dial, electronic and mechanical micrometer heads, and all of the other tools or gages that provide the output from the custom gage. We also make DataSure® Wireless Data Collection Systems, which we have integrated into an increasing number of special gages so measurement data can be gathered and recorded with 100% reliability. Simply put, our service and expertise are second to none – we control the entire process from concept through design, manufacture, inspection and delivery.
We encourage you to contact us directly to discuss your application requirements.

SPECIAL GAGE OF THE MONTH: BAR GAGE
Starrett’s bar gage is a single application measurement instrument which our Special Gage Division designs to meet the requirements of numerous applications such as: inner diameter, outer diameter, rises, drops, lengths, gaps, bores, and dimensions between angled surfaces. Our bar gage is offered with a current Starrett digital or dial indicator, standard or custom contacts to meet the application, and features a low-friction ball bushing with a direct transfer mechanism for exceptional accuracy and repeatability. In order to provide the desired weight, rigidity, and “feel” of the gage while limiting thermal expansion, the gage body can be made from aluminum, steel, composite carbon fiber, or other sufficient materials to meet customer requirements. Custom contacts and gage rests can be made from a variety of suitable materials such as carbide for improved wear resistance, hardened steel to prevent surface chipping, or nylon for use on delicate parts. Our bar gage is meant to be set and reverified on a dedicated master by sweeping to find the lowest reading and then setting the indicator. The gage can then be placed on the part where it can be swept to find the actual gaging dimension. Dedicated masters are designed to replicate the customers’ part at the nominal tolerance. Contact and rest surfaces of the master are made from ground carbide for accuracy and wear control. For digital options, data output can be offered through the Starrett DataSure system or SmartCables to allow for quick and easy data collection. Before manufacturing begins on your custom bar gage, a Special Gage Engineer will work with you and your team to ensure all specifications are met, and a written design approval is received.
