Assistant Head Teacher, Townley Grammar School. Director of Character Education and Wellbeing, Odyssey Trust for Education “The moment I found out I’d gained a place here at Dulwich College was incredibly exciting. I remember feeling very nervous before the letter was opened and then reading t and just feeling this sense that this is something different, that this is a real opportunity and something that doesn’t happen often in life or to many people. The staff here were incredibly supportive and caring, so the pastoral support was brilliant but I think what really helped me feel at ease was just the plethora of opportunities, activities and extra-curricular clubs that you could take part in. They really fuelled a sense of confidence, curiosity, of independence of thought, independent thinking and a desire to be a positive change in society. Being able to contribute to the bursaries is something incredibly powerful for students who may not come from such a financially or economically privileged background. The contribution does have the potential to change someone’s life.”

“I started in Year 7 as a fee paying boarder, then at the end of Year 8 my parents got a divorce which led to my mum not being able to afford school fees. The moment when I realised that I’d be able to stay I do remember a massive, massive, massive feeling of relief. I remember the Master telling me that he doesn’t want me to feel like I’m any less of a Dulwich boy just because I’m on a bursary. The teachers at Dulwich gave me a foundation of confidence. It definitely expanded my horizons. It made me think more things were achievable and within my reach than I may otherwise have thought. I think Dulwich definitely gives you a brilliant foundation for being able to be well-liked amongst a diverse set of people. Giving us exposure to people from a whole host of backgrounds makes Dulwich boys a lot more empathetic; it makes us a lot more able to hold conversations with people and not look down on people and not be patronising.”
